3 Nine Hundred Seventy-Second Program of the Season Concert Orchestra Scott Sandmeier, Conductor Overture to Der Zigeunerbaron.... Johann Strauss ( ) Concerto No. 3, Sz. 119 (1945)... Béla Bartók Allegretto ( ) Adagio religioso Allegro vivace Clare Longendyke, Piano Intermission Night Ceremonies (1979)*.... Frederick Fox Adagio Allegro moderato.... ( ) Andante Allegro * Memorial Performance music.indiana.edu Musical Arts Center Sunday Afternoon April Fifteenth Three O Clock
4 NIGHT CEREMONIES (1979) Completed in January 1979, Night Ceremonies was described by one reviewer as a major work that may be thought of in terms of a combination symphony and concerto for orchestra. The title suggests a nocturnal ritual of some sort, but the composer tells us that the work is essentially non-programmatic with night sounds of images expressed only in very abstract terms. Fox provided a detailed commentary on his piece: In the first movement, a major aspect is the progression from a sense of pulseless, floating motion to an ever increasing and heavily accented rhythmic emphasis. In this context, the design of the movement can be delineated in three sections and a brief coda, which may be described as follows: 1. A slow, arrhythmic section that is characterized by a gradual thinning of the texture associated with a gradual rise from mid-range to high tessitura. 2. A fast section with more, yet still minimal use of pulse and accentuation while the tessitura spreads to include the high and middle orchestral range. 3. While continuing in the faster tempo, a marked increase in pulsive accenting occurs with the entire orchestral range being exploited. The coda manifests a retardation of motion in the upper register with a return to the floating nature of the first section. The second movement is a classically structured three-part form, A B A. The A theme is an axial type, pivoting around the interval of a minor third. Opening with a statement in the extreme upper register of a solo oboe, with octave lower doublings played by the flute and alto flute, the theme moves on a descending path featuring the timbral variety of the wind instruments. The B section is scored for string orchestra only, with an extremely long, chromatic melodic line played by unmuted first violins, with the other strings (muted) moving in chromatic clusters contrapuntally. The A returns with an extended statement by the full orchestra. The movement closes quietly with fragments of the theme alternating between English horn and alto flute, accompanied by harp, tambourine, and maracas. While the first and second movements feature some soloistic and virtuosic scoring, the third movement requires all the families of the orchestra to perform some very challenging passages. One primary thrust of the final movement is the employment of three major increases of tempi which lead to the climax of the composition. In addition to the above mentioned characteristics in the three movements, there exists the common thread of interval connections, types of rhythmic units, and related speeds of various tempi, which, hopefully, integrate the movements.
5 Frederick Fox studied composition with Ruth Shaw Wiley and received his B.M. degree from Wayne State University in He came to the Indiana University School of Music, where he studied composition with Bernhard Heiden and received his M.M. in 1957 and his D.M. in He began his teaching career at Franklin College in Franklin, Ind., where he constituted the entire music faculty, undertaking everything from teaching music appreciation to conducting the school chorus. In he taught music theory and composition at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. In 1962, Fox was one of a handful of composers selected to the National Music Council to serve as composer-in-residence to our nation s public school systems. He assumed a residency in the Minneapolis Public Schools, and during , wrote choral, instrumental, orchestral, and band music for elementary and secondary school students. In 1963, the Ford Foundation became involved in the project, and he moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as administrative assistant to the program, by then called the Contemporary Music Project. In 1964, Fox was appointed chair of music theory and composition in the music department of California State University at Hayward. During his 10-year tenure there, Hayward s music department grew from only 60 students to approximately 500. A member of the Jacobs School of Music faculty from 1974 until his retirement as professor of music (composition) in May 1997 and chair of the composition department from 1981 to 1994, Fox epitomized the composition program at the school for several generations of students not only by his dedication, tenacity, and remarkable effectiveness as a teacher, but also through the example of his imaginative and well-crafted music. Upon his return to IU, one of Fox s first undertakings was the founding of the IU New Music Ensemble. His extensive catalogue includes more than 55 published compositions. A great many of his works have been commissioned and performed by significant ensembles and soloists in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Japan.
6 A native of Chicago, Ill., pianist Clare Longendyke was born in 1987 and began her musical studies at the age of seven. She received a bachelor s degree in piano performance magna cum laude from the Boston University College of Fine Arts, where she studied with Maria Clodes-Jaguaribe and Linda Jiorle-Nagy. She has participated in music festivals and master classes in the U.S. and Europe. Laureate of the prestigious Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship in 2009, as well as a recipient of grants from the Zaleski Foundation, Longendyke spent three years studying at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with professors Erik Berchot and Pavlos Yallourakis. She received the Diplôme d Enseignement à l unanimité avec des félicitations du jury (Diploma with the highest distinction of the jury) and a diploma with distinction in chamber music, as well as special recognition for her interpretation of the works of Elliott Carter. Longendyke s most notable performances include a recital at Paris s Salle Cortot and solo and chamber music recitals at the Fondation des États-Unis as part of its young artist program, PONT. She is currently pursuing a master s degree in piano performance at the Jacobs School, where she is an associate instructor and student of Jean-Louis Haguenauer.
