4 SAA-uk s Mission is: Enrich people s lives through engagement and participation in tradition and contemporary South Asian Music and Dance Wow! What a amazing Spring and Summer, with everyone cycling, making music and dancing across Yorkshire Now our charity is ready to take you through the Autumn and Winter seasons, bring a smile to your faces, stop you from hibernating and dreading the shorter days and cold dark nights. Happy belated Eid to everyone! Do look out for Navrattri, Deepawali (Diwali), Gurparb, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year, Uttarayan, Holi and many more festivals taking place between September and March (see learning and participation page 12-13) At SAA-uk we continue to Celebrate Women in the Arts through out Concert Series around Leeds. February offers a rare opportunity to enjoy three world class male Kathak dancers with their incredible show Navodit. 5 SAFEGUARDING THE OFFER! It is also gives me great pleasure to announce that Arts Council England will continue to support our great cause from 2015 to Even though we receive funding from statutory organisations, we still need to fundraise to carry out our charitable aims. In Summer 2014 we launched our first Campaign called GENERATION 21. Over the next three years this appeal will allow individuals and businesses to make donations and offer support for programmes and projects that are under threat or closure. As a registered charity we are grateful for the donations we receive to help us to preserve South Asian Arts. As a young person in the late 1960 s, a lack of culturally relevant music and dance activities ignited my passion to bring about change for people from all walks of life. I wanted to give people the opportunity to take part in arts and culture that inspire them. In my experience access to arts gives an individual, and in many cases their family, a new confidence, a sense of belonging, an opportunity to thrive and make a positive contribution to the place they have made home. I believe art and culture is the binding agent of our society. Provides us with the tools to express our individuality, highlights a community s uniqueness and is a vehicle to share in, a positive way, things that we have in common. Teaches us to respect each other and empowers us to create a space and place that we all feel safe to grow, thrive and contribute to. Recently I spoke to Biman and Suma Dey about their son Om who joined the Sunday Music Academy in 2012 and this is their story. Om is 7 years old and was born two months premature. As a result there is a delay in his cognitive learning, communication skills, social skills, concentration and gross/fine motor development. I was introduced to SAA-UK through one of their programmes and through further discussions, music was recommended as discipline which may improve areas that I have described above. Through attending tabla sessions at the Sunday Music Academy, Om has made noticeable progress in the above areas. School have also seen change in his progress. Although Om is still development in the conceptual learning, he has shown improvement in his memory retention, social interactions and communication skills. As parents, we have been very pleased to have enrolled Om to the music academy. Om clearly enjoys the challenge that is provided for him and the style of teaching. We would recommend other students to enrol on the multi-disciplines that are available at the academy. So for as little as 1.00 a week or a year will make a huge difference to people like OM and others to have sustainable access to opportunities provided by SAA-uk. You can make your DONATION to our Campaign Generation 21 or appeal Our Music, Our Dance, Our Heritage by cheque, made payable to SAA-uk or ONLINE via our website: (Please note: if you are a UK taxpayer you have the option to gift aid your donation) To discuss MAJOR GIFTS or partnerships please contact Darren Tiffney Head of Finance and Marketing on or darren@saa-uk.org On behalf of all the performers, volunteers and students I wish to express a heart felt Thank you for your donation.

26 Learning and Participation with SAA-uk After a very busy, vibrant and inspiring Summer, we re looking forward to welcoming all our wonderful music and dance students back with the start of a new academic year. And we really do have something for everyone, whether you re an absolute beginner or advanced learner, an adult or child, a school or community group, SAA-uk offers a whole range of activities to celebrate South Asian music and dance. Plus we re inviting new participants to come along to an Open Day during the first week of term to give our classes a go so if you want to come along and try our music classes on Sunday 7th September or dance classes on Friday 26th September (or both!) you are more than welcome! And we have a new member of the Dance Academy team outstanding Bharatanatyam dancer Santosh Menon; student and teacher at the world-famous Kalakshetra Dance Academy, who we hope will persuade some of you boys to join in and enjoy dance too! We take a holistic approach to learning, enhancing weekly study with additional opportunities to perform and participate in community and professional platforms. We also encourage learners to take in and absorb as much live art as they can, so please have a look at our programme of events in the other section of this brochure. In the meantime, if you have questions or want to register, please call me on or education@saa-uk.org Maria Spadafora Community Engagement Officer MEET THE SAA-UK TUTORS Bhupinder Chaggar Harjinderpal Singh Surjeet Singh Arnab Chakrabarty Jasdeep Degun Poulomi Chakrabarty Tabla Santoor Bowed Sarod Sitar Vocals 2/3
