4 Seeming and Being by Paul Mack Somers Things are not always what they seem, as the old saw has it. Take, for example, the Magnificat by Dietrich Buxtehude. The composer was the great career model for J. S. Bach. He had become the music director for all but operatic productions in the wealthy Hanseatic League city of Lübeck. There he had carved out a place as both an important organist and choral composer. Unlike Bach, he was never required to produce weekly choral music, so his large body of work is due to his own vision of what music was needed for various occasions in the city during his long tenure. Buxtehude instituted the five annual Abendmusik (evening music) concerts that were so famous that when Bach visited Buxtehude, walking all the way to Lübeck from Arnstadt in Saxony to do so, he stayed on long after his allowed visit of one month partly in order to attend two of the Abendmusik concerts, which impressed him greatly. These progams were considered by contemporaries as being the equivalent of opera performances! Handel also visited the already legendary Buxtehude. There was a time when Buxtehude was seen mostly as an important precursor to Bach and Handel. But nowadays he is seen as important in his own right, as well as being a transmitter of the style of spatially organized music which flows from Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice, through Heinrich Schütz in Dresden, to Buxtehude, and on to both Bach (as in his St. Matthew Passion) and Handel (as in the Dettingen Te Deum of today s concert). To sing Buxtehude s music is to discover his special way of making dissonances sweet. Still holding onto the late renaissance Italian conceit of the sweet pain of love, Buxtehude directs this sweet pain toward religious subjects. If the music lacks that particular sweetness, it doesn t sound like Buxtehude. So it cannot be a surprise to the attentive listener that the Magnificat of today s performance has been placed by scholars into the doubtful and misattributed part of a list of Buxtehude s works. One can be sure that these scholars have eliminated Buxtehude as the composer by making all of the usual comparisons of papers, water marks, and inks and by attempting to track the copy back to Uppsala University of the late 1600s. But all it really takes to make the piece doubtful is to listen to it with the sound of Buxtehude s other works in one s mind. Those patented sweet dissonances are missing. And the type of counterpoint in play seems earlier and of a different, more Italianate ethos. Putting aside any connection to Buxtehude, however, the now anonymous Magnificat is a wonderful and expressive work. Its crystal-clear vocal and instrumental lines carry the text perfectly. Solos and choral parts mix well into a single lucid musical picture. It may not be by Buxtehude, but it is clearly by a masterful composer. Were we to identify this person, this Magnificat would be listed among that person s finest works. Another example of something not being what it would seem is George Frideric Handel s Dettingen Te Deum. To be sure, the text is that of the standard Te Deum, written in the 4th century as a prayer of praise. But those words are merely the underlying mannequin upon which astonishingly martial musical clothing is hung. It was a millenium-long tradition that after a military victory a Te Deum would be sung. So when King George II of England, whose master of music was Handel, personally led the British infantry in a victorious battle against the French cavalry at Dettingen, Bavaria, on June 27, 1743, a Te Deum of suitable proportions was required. And Handel pulled out all the stops. Here Handel makes full use of the old tradition of trumpets indicating the King in battle, while oboes indicate the King away from battle as father and protector of his people. The simple heavenly affirmations of the text are expanded into peals of earthly grandeur featuring three trumpets and timpani. Indeed, it is a good place to note that the early timpanists originally played the same music as the third trumpet in baroque music. One of the aspects worth considering in the Dettingen Te Deum is its ancestry in the antiphonal music of Giovanni Gabrieli s Venice and Heinrich Schütz s Dresden, as mentioned above. In such music a large force is echoed or counterbalanced with music from a different location to the side or opposite the performers and listeners. Though this kind of spatial arrangement may not have been envisaged by Handel, there is a sense that the soloists are musical entities distinct from, and often seemingly distant from, the chorus. A large choral statement is followed by soloists as if from a different musical space, rather in a relationship like the larger ripieno and smaller concertino of the baroque concerto grosso style in which Handel loved to compose. Finally this afternoon, there are the satirical and musical slap-stick antics of P. D. Q. Bach, the always bizarre alter ego of Peter Schickele. He is also the composer of excellent

5 serious music, though he is sadly not half as well-known for these works as he should be. His masterful Viola Concerto is but one example of Schickele in serious mode. To fully appreciate his comic works does require a strong sense of what is normal. We can only find the humor in Alice s visit through the looking glass if we know how living life not through the mirror works. So despite all the shenanigans and invented instruments (yes, that s a taped recorder, and check out the corrugahorn made out of flexible gas-line piping and a two-liter soda bottle), if you don t know how an honest to God (as it were) Mass really works, you ll never get all that Schickele has put into this music. On a personal note (E-flat), several times this writer has had a good time chatting with Peter Schickele. He is a very amusing person, abounding with witty off-the-cuff remarks when appropriate. But he is also a very smart (we re talking Swarthmore College here) and seriously thoughtful man. I hold him in high esteem as a person as well as composer. P.D.Q. Bach: Biographical Notes by Professor Peter Schickele In the 17th and 18th centuries the name Bach was synonymous with fine musicmaking: Johann Sebastian, certainly the biggest twig on the family tree, was both preceded and followed by many accomplished and well known musicians, some of whom were in the service of royalty. It is easy to understand, therefore, why the Bach clan was loath to admit the existence of a member who was called a pimple on the face of music, the worst musician ever to have trod organ pedals, the most dangerous musician since Nero, and other things not quite so complimentary. They even started a rumor that P.D.Q. Bach, without a doubt Johann Sebastian s last and least offspring, was not really a member of the Bach family the implication being that he was illegitimate, or, even better, an imposter. Although P.D.Q. Bach was born on April 1, 1742 and died on May 5, 1807, the dates on his first tombstone (before he was moved to an unmarked pauper s grave) were inscribed in a transparent attempt to make it appear that he could not have been the son of J.S., who died in Nice try, Bach family close, but no cigar: some of us, or at least one of us, are not fooled, or at least, is not fooled. P.D.Q. Bach once said that his illustrious father gave him no training in music whatsoever, and it is one of the few things he said that we can believe without reservation. His rebelliousness was such, in fact, that he avoided music as much as possible until he was well into his thirties (as a teenager he did assist in the construction of the loudest instrument ever created, the pandemonium, but he wisely skipped town before the instrument s completion, having sensed with uncanny accuracy, that the Pavilion of Glass was perhaps not the most felicitous location for the inaugural concert). But by the mid-1770s he realized that, given his last name, writing music was the easiest thing he could do, and he began composing the works that were to catapult him into obscurity. This most mini musical life has been divided into three creative periods: the Initial Plunge, the Soused Period, and Contrition. The middle period was by far the longest of the three, and was characterized by a multiplicity of contrapuntal lines and a greater richness of harmony due to almost constant double vision. It was during this period that he emulated (i.e., stole from) the music of Haydn and Mozart, but his pathetic attempts to be au courant were no more successful than his pathetic attempts to be passé had been during the Initial Plunge; having to cope with the problems that accompany immense popularity was something P.D.Q. Bach managed to avoid. It has been said that the only original places in his music are those places where he forgot what he was stealing. And, since his memory was even shorter than his sightedness, he was in point of fact one of the most original composers ever to stumble along the musical pike. When you come right down to it, which is something we should all do every once in a while (As Plato said, or was it Aristotle? the unexamined life isn t worth a hill of beans. Maybe it was Socrates.), P.D.Q. Bach was perhaps not as pitiful as we are often led to believe: he was, by all accounts, intimately acquainted with all three components of the proverbial wine/women/song life style, he died a wealthy man (due to a little patent medicine thing he had going on the side), and he can now boast 17 record albums and annual concerts in New York City devoted almost exclusively to his own music. How many of us can say that? Well, can you?

6 This concert is dedicated to the memory of Caroline Holt, longtime member of Oratorio Singers, who ensured our success in many ways including helping on our stage-builidng crews. A little lady who wielded a big hammer, she will be sorely missed. Magnificat Anima Mea by Dietrich Buxtehude Magnificat anima mea Dominum. Et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo. Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae: ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes. Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est: et sanctum nomen ejus. Et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Deposuit potentes de sede, et exaltavit humiles. Esurientes implevit bonis et divites dimisit inanes. Suscepit Israel puerum suum, recordatus misericordiae suae. Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros; Abraham at semini eius in saecula. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior. He has looked with favor on his lowly servant: From this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is His name. He has mercy on those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit. Casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of His servant Israel, to remember His promise of mercy. The promise made to our ancestors; to Abraham and his children forever. Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning and is now and always and throughout ages of ages. Amen.

9 The existence of P. D. Q. Bach ( )?, the youngest and oddest of J. S. Bach s 20 some children is the discovery of composer, musicologist, and humorist Peter Schickele. It has been observed that P.D.Q. Bach seldom wrote original tunes; he stole melodies from other composers and rearranged them using instruments not often used in orchestras, such as the tromboon, trombonus interruptus, slide whistle, horn & hardart, lasso d amore, left-handed sewer flute, car horn, and kazoo. In the end though, through all their many mutilations, P.D.Q. s pieces never deviate from Big Daddy Bach s original harmonic structure. Missa Hilarious (S.N 2 O) by P.D.Q. Bach 1.
