Early Christian Psalms: The Gloria and The Magnificat by Paul Mack Somers, Director of Adult Education, Bay-Atlantic Symphony Important words intended to be raised above mundane human expression have been sung as part of religious expression since the earliest pages of history. So it was no innovation for the early Christian church to develop a tradition of hymnody. Indeed, they would have been considered a strange religious group had they not had singing as part of their rituals, even in the earliest days. For Christians the Gloria and the Magnificat, both with origins in Greek texts, are drawn from the New Testament book of Luke. Luke 2:14, often called the Angelic Hymn, is delivered from on high to the gathered shepherds, and consists simply of Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis (Glory in the highest to God, and on earth peace to men of good will). The two clauses of the hymn are contrasted in mood and thus often set in music as two different pieces or sections. That this text would be sung as early as the second century and probably earlier, in spite of the King James text suggesting that the angels were speaking, grows from the long history of song as elevated speech. Further additions in the form of prayers of praise, which also serve as elaborations on the Trinitarian understanding of God, were in place by 370 AD. Because the Gloria is part of the daily morning prayer liturgy, it is the text most often set to music through Christian history. Vivaldi s setting is probably the most famous as a work separate from the complete Mass. He composed three settings of which this is the second (the third is lost). Its opening motive of octaves is a conscious evocation of physics as a symbol of God the Father, for the first overtone is an octave above the fundamental pitch (D up to the next D), and as such represented the first element of the Trinity. After this motive is stated twice, two instruments respond with a motive which fills the range of a fifth (D up to A), which is the second overtone, and thus, of course, represents God the Son. So before a word is sung, the orchestra has symbolically told us the topic of the complete work: God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. Probably composed in or around 1715, it pre-dates the mature works of J. S. Bach in which he increasingly used such symbolic use of motives. The connection between the two baroque masters, whether through this Gloria or not, is no surprise when one learns that Bach avidly studied and even transcribed several of the works of Vivaldi. Yet Vivaldi s opening octaves was already so iconic, so boldly recognizable, that no one, including Bach, dared come close to imitation. Even though the vast majority of modern performances of Vivaldi s Gloria are for mixed chorus of women and men, the composer was certainly writing for the exemplary female chorus found in Venice s Ospedale della Pietà, the girls orphanage at which he was the music master. Not only were all the vocal parts sung by them, but the orchestra s players were also girls of the school. These young ladies helped support the orphanage which cared for them by singing for various occasions in the courts of the Venetian upper class. Venice had long been a cosmopolitan mercantile city. So it is hardly a surprise that the Domine Fili unigenite movement for chorus, is redolent of the snappy rhythms most associated with the music of Lully and Rameau from the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV of France. This style in music swept Europe as surely as in architecture mini-versailles appeared in many non-french locations. But Venice itself was a place where musical innovations had already taken place. It was in St. Mark s Cathedral that, a bit over a century before Vivaldi, Giovanni Gabrieli had created surround-sound, as we might call it, by placing brass and choral forces in different places within the space to quite effectively use what is called antiphonal writing. Even with his Gloria no doubt conceived for a more limited sound-space than San Marco, Vivaldi often set up contrasting blocks of sound which could work antiphonally. The opening movement has the rhythmically busy orchestra contrasted to the almost chorale-like chorus. And in the Domine Deus, Agnus Dei movement the alto and the responding chorus could easily be perceived as each occupying a different arm of the transept of a church. The Quoniam, which openly brings back the adoration of God the Father and Son found at the beginning of the Angel s Hymn, made Vivaldi s return of the original God and Son motives an equally dramatically strong statement, though not antiphonal, certainly working like an echo of the opening. The final chorus Cum Sancto Spiritu is a double fugue (with two independent subjects) actually by an earlier Venetian composer named Giovanni Maria Ruggieri (fl ). His was also a Gloria, but for two choruses (again the antiphonal idea at work in Venice) composed in The Magnificat, or, The Song of Mary (in some early sources considered to be the Song of Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist) is quoted directly from Luke 1: Gloria Patri is often attached as a conclusion.

The text itself can set the astute reader on a detective hunt, for it does not take long to begin to recognize resonances, even direct or near direct quotes from the Old Testament or Apocrypha: I Samuel, Habbakuk, Isaiah, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiasticus, Esther, and Genesis all can be discovered to be sources. John Rutter, certainly one of the most famous modern composers of church music, has written these program notes: The passage from St. Luke (Chapter 1, verses 46-55) known as the Magnificat has always been one of the most familiar and well-loved of scriptural texts, not least because of its inclusion as a canticle in the Catholic office of Vespers and in Anglican Evensong. It is a poetic outpouring of praise, joy and trust in God, ascribed by Luke to the Virgin Mary on learning that she was to give birth to the Christ. Musical settings of it abound, though surprisingly few of them since J. S. Bach s give the text extended treatment. I had long wished to write an extended Magnificat, but was not sure how to approach it until I found my starting point in the association of the text with the Virgin Mary. In countries such as Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, feast days of the Virgin are joyous opportunities for people to take to the streets and celebrate with singing, dancing and processions. These images of outdoor celebration were I think somewhere in my mind as I wrote, although I was not fully conscious of the fact until afterwards. I was conscious of following Bach s example in adding to the liturgical text: the interpolated Sanctus (to the Gregorian chant of the Missa cum jubilo) in the third movement seems to grow out of the preceding thought et sanctum nomen eius. The lovely 15th Century English poem Of a Rose (which forms the second movement) and the prayer Sancta Maria (which the soloist sings to its Gregorian melody in the middle of the Gloria), both strengthen the Marian connection further. As any good composer would, Rutter has a wonderful time translating visual images in the text into musical images. Probably most easy to hear are the big fanfare passages which accompany Quia fecit mihi magna (For he that is mighty hath magnified me), or the strength of the Lord (Fecit potentiam) in the rigorous discipline of a fugue followed by the scattering of the proud (Dispersit suberbos) in which each section of the choir is violently thrown down the scale part by part. This is dramatic writing at its best. Rutter is not afraid to refer, either directly or by imitation, to other musical styles. When he wants to emphasize the timelessness of et sanctum nomen eus, as he mentions in his own notes, he then quotes the plainsong chant of the Sanctus, the words of which are from the Old Testament book of Isaiah, as a musical commentary on this portion of the Magnificat text, and a further reference to all the other Old Testament references. But when he wants to make sure that musicians and listeners alike understand that the text is still meaningful in modern times, there can be no mistaking the likeness of the opening to the ethos of Leonard Bernstein. Cantus Avium Solamen Est by Trent Johnson Cantus Avium Solamen Est or Birdsong Brings Relief to My Longing is in short a concerto for clarinet, bird whistle, chorus and orchestra. Though it is not a concerto in the traditional sense in which a solo instrument is front and center accompanied by an orchestra. In this case it is a collaboration between the clarinet, bird whistles, chorus and orchestra. This performance is a preview to a larger work that will ultimately contain perhaps 4 or 5 movements. The primary focus of the work is birdsong and poetry that evokes the imagery and musical landscapes on which birdsong can flourish. When approached by Mr. Lamy about this project, I began to contemplate how I might best merge birdsong and poetry to the required forces. Together we decided upon the poems, Birdsong by the 13th century Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi, I Live My Life in Growing Orbits by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and the humorous children s poem Eletelephony by the American poet Laura Richards. After contemplating and meditating on these poems, the movements ultimately seemed to write themselves as the poetic language, style, rhythm and imagery of these poems entirely dictated their outcome. In these works there are actual birdsong quotations as well as birdsong inspired gestures and motives. The movements set to the poems of Rumi and Rilke make ample use of birdsong and birdsong inspired material. Eletelephony is a different matter. A favorite of Mr. Lamy s since childhood, this poem takes the overall theme into a different direction to be sure, but it so delightful (and we hope that the musical setting is also) that we are able to venture into other animal realms while still collectively remaining focused on birdsong.

Cantus Avium Solamen Est (Birdsong Brings Relief) by Trent Johnson Birdsong Poem by Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi Birdsong brings relief to my longing I m just as ecstatic as they are, but with nothing to say! Please universal soul, practice some song or something through me! Eletelephony Poem by Laura Richards Once there was an elephant, Who tried to use the telephant No! No! I mean an elephone Who tried to use the telephone (Dear me! I am not certain quite That even now I ve got it right.) However it was, he got his trunk Entangled in the telephunk; The more he tried to get it free, The louder buzzed the telephee (I fear I d better drop the song Of elephop and telephong!) I Live My Life in Growing Orbits Poem by Rainer Maria Rilke I live my life in growing orbits, which move out over the things of this world. Perhaps I can never achieve the last, but that will be my attempt. I am circling around God, around the ancient tower, and I have been circling for a thousand years. And I still do not know if I am a falcon, or a storm, or a great song. A ten-minute intermission

Magnificat by John Rutter 1. Magnificat anima mea Magnificat anima mea Dominum. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, Et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo. My spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae: He has looked with favor on his lowly servant: ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent From this day all generations omnes generationes. will call me blessed. 2. Of a Rose, a lovely Rose Of a Rose, a lovely Rose Of a rose, a lovely rose, of a rose is all my song. Hearken to me both old and young, How this rose began to spring; A fairer rose to mine liking, In all this world ne know I none. Five branches of that rose there been, The which be both fair and sheen; The rose is called Mary, heaven s queen; Out of her bosom a blossom sprang. The frst branch was of great honour: that blest Marie should bear the flow r; There came an angel from heaven s tower, To break the devil s bond. The second branch was great of might, That sprang upon Christmas night; The star shone over Bethlem bright, That man should see it both day and night. The third branch did spring and spread; Three kinges then the branch gan led, Unto our Lady in her child-bed; Into Bethlem that branch sprang right. The fourth branch it sprang to hell, The devil s power for to fell: That no soul therein should dwell, The branch so blessedfully sprang. The fifth branch it was so sweet, it sprang to heaven, both crop and root, Therein to dwell and be our bote: So blessedly it sprang.

Pray we to her with great honour, She that bare the blessed flow r, To be our help and our succour, And shield us from the fiendes bond. 3. Quia fecit mihi magna Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est: The Almighty has done great things for me et sanctum nomen eius. and holy is His name. Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are filled with thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Et misericordia eius a progenie in progenies timentibus eum. 4. Et misericordia And His mercy is on them who fear Him, throughout all generations. 5. Fecit potentiam Fecit potentiam in brachio suo: dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Deposuit potentes de sede, et exaltavit humiles. 6. Esurientes Esurientes implevit bonis: et divites dimisit inanes. Suscepit Israel puerum suum, recordatus misericordiae suae. Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, Abraham at semini eius in saecula. 7. Gloria Patri Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. He hath shown strength with His arm: hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent empty away. He remembering His mercy hath holpen His servant Israel. As He promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed forever. Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Sancta Maria, succurre miseris, iuva pusillanimes, refove flebiles: ora pro populo, interveni pro clero, intercede pro devoto femineo sexu: sentiant omnes tuum iuvamen, quicumque tuum sanctum implorant auxilium.
