The recital program features wide-ranging virtuoso repertoire by Mozart, Ravel, Liszt, Beethoven, and Ginastera. TD Bank, add(ventures), Robert Naparstek and Lisa Bisaccia are the recital s sponsors. General Admission tickets ($25) are available at riphil.org/tickets, and at the RIPO box office at Alon Goldstein is a favorite with Philharmonic audiences, most recently for his January 2012 performance of Grieg s Concerto in A minor, which the Providence Journal praised as masterful He s got a flawless technique, but it s his musical savvy that stands out. Goldstein and the Philharmonic s artistic administrator David Gasper visited Steinway & Sons famed factory showroom in Astoria, Queens, NY to select the piano. The instrument was carefully chosen by Mr. Goldstein and Mr. Gasper to complement the acoustics of its new home, the Vets. The Steinway made its debut in the Philharmonic s season-opening concert in September, with a performance of Beethoven s Emperor Concerto featuring pianist Jeffrey Kahane. The new piano was a gift of the Champlin Foundations. This dedication recital gives our glorious new instrument the spotlight it deserves, said David Beauchesne, executive director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School. We re so grateful for the generosity of The Champlin Foundations, and for Alon Goldstein s expertise in selecting the best piano for both our orchestra and the Vets. It s a rare thrill to hear solo piano of this caliber on this stage may this recital be the first of many we ll share. Alon Goldstein is one of the most original and sensitive artists of his generation, admired for his musical intelligence, dynamic personality, artistic vision and innovative programming by audiences and critics throughout the United States, Europe, and Israel. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 18 with the Israel Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta. In recent seasons he has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco, Baltimore, St. Louis, Houston, Vancouver, Kansas City and North Carolina Symphonies, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and orchestras on tour in Paris, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria. Mr. Goldstein s past two seasons include his successful debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a return engagement with the IRIS Orchestra. He also performed in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Leon Fleisher conducting. Among his recital and chamber music concerts were critically-acclaimed performances in Beijing, Guatemala City, Kent, Chicago, Los Angeles, Coral Gables, Seattle, St. Paul, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv. Highlights of recent seasons include his Carnegie Hall debut in the Mozart Triple Concerto.

3 ABOUT THE PROGRAM: stories behind the music Steinway & Sons: Founded in 1853, Steinway & Sons is one of the last remaining factories where each piano is made completely by hand by skilled artisans, in a process stretching longer than a year. While there were once over 200 piano companies in the New York area, Steinway is the only one to remain. Generations of artisans have developed the methods used today including over 125 patented features and processes handed down from one craftsman to another. Not a single step is outsourced or machine-produced. A Steinway concert grand is comprised of more than 12,000 individual parts. Over 98% of active concert pianists choose to perform on Steinway instruments. Alon Goldstein and the Philharmonic s artistic administrator David Gasper spent a day at the famed Steinway selection rooms and factory to consider several candidates and choose the instrument which would best complement the acoustics of its new home, the Vets. In addition to performances of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky concertos, Mr. Goldstein s busy schedule includes nationwide performances with the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio, and solo recitals, many of which include the music of Debussy, in homage of the composer s 150th birthday. Mr. Goldstein s past two seasons include his successful debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski playing Mendelssohn Concerto No. 1, a return to the IRIS Orchestra for Saint Saëns Concerto No. 2 with Michael Stern, Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1 with Jaime Laredo and the Vermont Symphony, and Avner Dorman s Lost Soulswith the Santa Barbara Symphony under Nir Kabaretti. He also performed in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France with Leon Fleisher conducting. Among his recital and chamber music concerts were critically-acclaimed performances in Beijing, Guatemala City, Kent, Chicago, Los Angeles, Coral Gables, Seattle, St. Paul, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv.

4 Highlights of recent seasons include his Carnegie Hall debut in the Mozart Triple Concerto with Joseph Kalichstein and Shai Wosner, as well as performing two world premieres: the aforementioned Lost Soulspiano concerto written for him by rising star Israeli composer Avner Dorman with the Kansas City Symphony and music director Michael Stern, and a concerto by Mark Kopytman with Avner Biron and the Jerusalem Camerata Orchestra. Summer 2011 and 2012 included master classes at Steans Institute of the Ravinia Festival, New York s International Keyboard Festival and recitals in Paris, England and Israel. Goldstein was a featured panelist at the 2010 Conference of the League of American Orchestras discussing his recent Beethoven concerto cycle with the Rockford Symphony, which expanded the traditional concert experience to a multi-media presentation contextualizing Beethoven s life and work, and resulted in unprecedented attendance and a subsequent surge in subscriptions. Other season appearances with orchestra included Chopin Concerto no. 2 with the Delaware Symphony, Mozart Concerto K. 453 with the Jerusalem Symphony and a return engagement with the Bucharest Philharmonic 'George Enescu'. Recent seasons also included a recital in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago, in the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. as well as return appearances throughout Israel, including his annual recital, broadcast live, at Henry Crown Symphony Hall. He was featured at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival performing all three Schumann piano trios and was heard performing chamber music concerts at the Peoples Symphony Concerts in New York, Society of the Four Arts in West Palm Beach and The Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival with principals from the Berlin Philharmonic and violinist Nikolaj Znaider. Alon debuted in recital with the International Keyboard Festival Master Series at Mannes College, Tannery Pond Concerts, Civic Music Association of Oklahoma City, Muhlenberg College, The Reif Center and Matinee Musicale. Alon joined in honoring Dame Myra Hess in a recital celebrating the 70th anniversary of the London National Gallery of Art Series which she founded. The program, which mirrored the inaugural recital performed by Dame Myra, was performed in Chicago on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts and broadcast live on radio and television. Alon has appeared at the Gilmore, Santa Fe, Tanglewood, Ravinia, Marlboro, Seattle, and Steamboat festivals in the United States as well as Prussia Cove the Verbier Festival and Klavier Festival in Rühr. He performed at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Millennium Park in Chicago with the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra. Over the past several years he has also taught and played at the Tel Hai international piano master classes held in Israel. He is the winner of numerous competitions, among them the Arianne Katcz Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, Nena Wideman Competition in the US and the Francois Shapira competition in Israel. He is also the recipient of the 2004 Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant and the America Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarships. The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC chose a live recording of one of Alon s recitals there for its first CD release. Other recordings include solo recital programs through the Jerusalem Music Center Mishkenot Sha ananim and the Israeli Music Institute featuring works by Israeli composers. Alon graduated from the Peabody Conservatory where he studied with Leon Fleisher and served as his assistant a position assigned only to his most exceptional students.

5 UPCOMING RHODE ISLAND PHILHARMONIC CLASSICAL CONCERTS ORCHESTRAL FIREWORKS: Saturday February 23 at 8pm Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF leads violinist KAREN GOMYO and the Orchestra in the Philharmonic premiere of Piazzolla s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Included in this colorful program are Fauré s Pelléas et Mélisande: Suite, op.80, Debussy s Ibéria: Images for Orchestra and Revueltas Sensemayá. The AMICA RUSH HOUR performance of selections from this program is Friday February 22 at 6:30pm. JEREMIAH AND THE GREAT (SYMPHONY): Saturday March 23 at 8pm Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF and the Orchestra welcome mezzo soprano SUSAN LORETTE DUNN as soloist for Bernstein s Symphony No. 1 (Jeremiah). The program includes Schubert s Symphony No. 9 in C major, D.944 (The Great C Major) and the world premiere of Philharmonic member Greg Fritze s Waterplace Park. The Open Rehearsal will be held on Friday March 22 at 5:30pm. BEETHOVEN S FIFTH!!! Saturday April 13 at 8pm Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF and the Orchestra perform an all Beethoven concert featuring Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, op. 43, Symphony No. 1 in C major, op. 21 and the ever popular Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67. The AMICA RUSH HOUR performance of Beethoven s Fifth, along with a RIPYO side by side performance, is Friday April 12 at 6:30pm. THE RESURRECTION SYMPHONY: Saturday May 4 at 8pm Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF and the Orchestra conclude the Classical season with soprano ILANA DAVIDSON, mezzo soprano SUSAN PLATTS, and the PROVIDENCE SINGERS in a performance of Mahler s Symphony No. 2 in C minor (Resurrection). 6 ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School is the largest fully integrated orchestra and music school in the United States. Our mission is to enrich and transform Rhode Island and our region through great music performance and education is the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra s 68th Season, Music Director Larry Rachleff s 17th with the Orchestra. The season includes an eight-concert Classical Series with a roster of worldrenowned guest artists that includes pianists Jeffrey Kahane and Adam Golka, violinists Augustin Hadelich and Karen Gomyo, cellist Wendy Warner, soprano Ilana Davidson, mezzo sopranos Susan Lorette Dunn and Susan Platts and guest conductor Grant Llewellyn. Our Amica Rush Hour Series offers an early start time -- 6:30pm -- on four Fridays. These shorter, informal, accessible classical concerts feature repertoire from the Saturday Classical concerts. Our four Open Rehearsals offer audience members insight into the collaboration between the conductor, guest artists and orchestra musicians as they prepare for the upcoming classical concert. Special events include the perennial holiday favorite Handel s Messiah with the Providence Singers. Resident Conductor Francisco Noya conducts our Education Concerts and our Summer Pops Concerts. Now in its 25th year, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School serves approximately 1,500 children, youth and adults every week with lessons, classes, ensembles and community partnership programs, and an additional 13,000 students annually through partnerships, residencies, education concerts and in-school performances. Ensembles include five youth orchestras, two wind ensembles, eleven jazz ensembles and many chamber music ensembles and the RI Philharmonic Community Orchestra for adults. 7 TICKETS AND DISCOUNTS TICKETS FOR ALL PHILHARMONIC CLASSICAL CONCERTS may be purchased 24/7 on the Philharmonic website: riphil.org/tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the Philharmonic box office at 667 Waterman Avenue, East Providence, by phone ( ) or in person Monday Friday 9am 4:30pm. On Open Rehearsal and Rush Hour Fridays, ticket sales are also available at The Vets box office, from 2:00pm until showtime. On Saturday concert days, tickets are available onsite at The Vets box office in person from 3:30pm until showtime, or by calling Ticket prices range from $15 to $100 for adults with discounts in selected areas of the hall for full time students and groups of 10 or more. Tickets for Open Dress Rehearsals are $12. Student rush: at 7:30pm if there are tickets remaining, a full time student presenting a valid student ID may buy one ticket for $12. There is free parking for all Philharmonic concerts at designated lots along Smith Street. The Philharmonic provides a free shuttle bus to and from the parking lots before and after the concerts. Please note: Due to construction at the Vets, Park Street is closed between the Providence Place Mall and Avenue of the Arts, and allows single lane northbound traffic only between Avenue of the Arts and Smith Street. Drop offs for patrons who need assistance can be made by pulling into Avenue of the Arts from Francis Street and then exiting up Park Street to the parking lots on Smith Street.
