For some, that personal sense is exploratory and fun. For others, it is a strong drive to study and perform. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Center for Music Education is a multi-faceted institution that offers meaningful music education programs that build communities, inspire young minds, and nurture the next generation of musicians and music lovers. In a time when music education is under threat, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra steps forward as a visible leader and advocate. We invite you to join us as a participant, audience member, supporter, and volunteer: aso.org/edu or asoeducation@woodruffcenter.org or COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL Discover the world of music, even if you ve never played an instrument before. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is proud to offer a range of engaging and upbeat classes for music exploration that are geared for the novice as well as the aspiring artist. In addition to our beginning/intermediate strings courses, the ASO s Community Music School also offers a music appreciation class and two community ensembles for adults (brass and strings). Learn more at aso.org/classes. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING Educators in the region turn to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for quality educational programming for their students. Musicians In Schools, Concerts for, and Sound Learning residencies are powerful tools for student success. Learning extends beyond the classroom and into the lives of families through the Family Concert Series, which offers three entertaining and educational concerts that make music a shared family experience. 2015/16 CONCERTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE The Concerts for series is conducted by Assistant Conductor and ASYO Music Director Joseph Young and this year will feature three programs: Music with a Purpose!, The Art of Sound and Classical American Roots. Music with a Purpose! celebrates that music is everywhere around us and it fills many different roles in our lives. Whether it s listening, dancing, celebrating or paying tribute, music enhances our everyday experiences. This concert promotes active listening, while exploring our many relationships with music using a variety of fun and familiar orchestral selections. Concerts take place in Atlanta Symphony Hall (unless otherwise noted) on: February & 11:15am Lassiter High School March 10 11am March & 11:15am Mount Carmel Christian Church March & 11:15am March & 11:15am Clayton County Performing Arts Center The ART of SOUND is designed for grades three through eight. The ART of SOUND explores the qualities and science of sound and how sound becomes music. Through a selection of major orchestral masterworks, students will become critical listeners and examine how sound is produced by the different instruments of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Students will see how sound can be manipulated in pitch, tone, dynamics and rhythm to create a complete work of art we see with our ears. Concerts are: October 14, 15, 27, & 11:40am Atlanta Symphony Hall Classical American Roots is created for grades six through 12. During an 1893 visit to the United States, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák said, The future music of this country must be founded upon what are called the African-American melodies. His words were visionary, as many American and immigrant folk music traditions would find their way into the foundations of our greatest orchestral music creations. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and ASO Assistant Conductor Joseph Young will engage students as analytical listeners as they explore where we come from and how our musical roots have shaped who we are as Americans. Concerts are: February 10, & 11:40am Atlanta Symphony Hall Call for more information at or contact ASOEducation@woodruffcenter.org 12
