TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 5 Thomas Sherwood, percussion Charles Settle, percussion Israeli composer Avner Dorman s concerto for percussion is a perfect showcase for ASO percussionists Thomas Sherwood and Charles Settle. Tchaikovsky s Symphony No. 5 is a gripping and unforgettable musical journey. OCT 1/3 JENNIFER HIGDON: Concerto for Orchestra BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor Jonathan Biss, piano Jennifer Higdon describes her Concerto for Orchestra as truly a concerto in that it requires virtuosity from the principal players, the individual sections, and the entire orchestra. Beethoven s Emperor concerto radiates defiance, heroism and virtuoso fireworks from start to finish. OCT 8/10/11 / SCHUBERT/arr. Webern: Six German Dances MOZART: Concerto for Flute and Harp DEBUSSY: Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 8 Donald Runnicles, conductor Christina Smith, flute Elisabeth Remy Johnson, harp Mozart s Flute and Harp Concerto is a delight, with the soloists engaging in charming dialogue throughout. Beethoven s Eighth Symphony showcases the composer s more playful side, filled with unexpected, delightful twists and turns. OCT 22/24 OLLI MUSTONEN: The Old Church at Petäjävesi BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 3 PROKOFIEV: Symphony No. 5 Olli Mustonen, conductor and piano Olli Mustonen s orchestral work, The Old Church at Petäjävesi, was inspired by an old Finnish church, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Beethoven s Piano Concerto No. 3, has a stormy opening movement and a finale that reveals a humorous side of the composer, too frequently overlooked. Prokofiev s Fifth Symphony is a heroic, moving work, expressing the hope and optimism of the Russian people and their allies at the time of its composition. NOV 5/7 JONATHAN LESHNOFF: Symphony No. 2, Innerspace WORLD PREMIERE BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 7 American composer Jonathan Leshnoff s Symphony No. 2 was inspired by the book, Innerspace, by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, and explores the wonders of Jewish mysticism. Prokofiev s Concerto is filled with virtuoso opportunities, as well the caustic humor often found in Prokofiev s music. 6 FEB 4/6 BRAHMS: Violin Concerto MICHAEL KURTH: New Work R. STRAUSS: Till Eulenspiegel David Coucheron, violin ASO Concertmaster David Coucheron is featured in an Everest of the Violin Concerto repertoire Brahms Violin Concerto. The concert also features a new ASO commission by Atlanta composer and member of the Orchestra s double-bass section, Michael Kurth. The program concludes with one of Richard Strauss most popular orchestral tone poems, Till Eulenspiegel. FEB 18/20 STRAVINSKY: Petrushka (1947) TCHAIKOVSKY: Violin Concerto BALAKIREV: Islamey Cristian Macelaru, conductor Karen Gomyo, violin Petrushka is the tale of a puppet who after being murdered by his rival returns to haunt his master, and is one of Stravinsky s orchestral masterpieces. The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto maintains its status as one of the most beautiful, thrilling and beloved works in the repertoire. This concert also features a kaleidoscopic transcription of Islamey for full orchestra by Sergei Lyapounov. FEB 25/27 MARK GREY: Frankenstein Symphony WORLD PREMIERE BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 1 Peter Serkin, piano The Frankenstein Symphony features music from American composer Mark Grey s full-length opera inspired by Mary Shelley s novel. Brahms First Piano Concerto is based off his first attempt at a symphony, at the behest of his mentor, Robert Schumann. MAR 3/5 BLACHER: Orchestral Variations on a Theme by Paganini SIBELIUS: Violin Concerto BRAHMS: Symphony No. 4 Marc Piollet, conductor Augustin Hadelich, violin The Sibelius Concerto combines virtuoso flights for the violin soloist with the composer s familiar haunting lyricism. In his New World Symphony, Dvořák expressed his admiration for America s music, and it abounds with suggestions of folk melodies and dances. A Shaw Choral Celebration MAR 31/APR 2 BERLIOZ: Le Corsaire Overture RAVEL: Piano Concerto for the Left Hand RAVEL: Rapsodie espagnole DEBUSSY: La mer Thomas Søndergård, conductor Alexandre Tharaud, piano Alexadre Tharaud plays Ravel s Concerto in D Major, a remarkable synthesis of classical and jazz elements, which when played by a great virtuoso suggests of a performance by two hands. French composer Claude Debussy maintained a lifelong passion for the sea. In his orchestral masterpiece, La mer, Debussy depicts its beauties and mysteries. 7 Robert McDuffie APR 7/8 Thu/Fri: 8pm ALVIN SINGLETON: Different River GRIEG: Piano Concerto SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 2 Louis Lortie, piano In Different River, a work commissioned and premiered by Maestro Spano and the ASO, Mr. Singleton depicts an ever-changing perspective on a river that is always moving each time you step in you re at a different place. The Grieg Piano Concerto opens with one of the most famous and dramatic moments in concert music, and closes with a brilliant finale based upon the halling, a lively Norwegian folk dance. Despite Sibelius insistence his Symphony No. 2 conveyed no specific message, the Finnish people have long seen it as a forceful expression of patriotism. Alexandre Tharaud Augustin Hadelich *APR 14/16 JONATHAN LESHNOFF: Zohar WORLD PREMIERE BRAHMS: A German Requiem Jessica Rivera, soprano Nmon Ford, baritone American composer Jonathan Leshnoff s orchestral work, Zohar, is a musical exploration of the wonders and beauties of Jewish mysticism. The German Requiem, scored for soprano and baritone solo, chorus and orchestra, contains music of unsurpassed beauty and humanity. APR 21/23 MAHLER: Symphony No. 9 Donald Runnicles, conductor Mahler composed his Ninth Symphony in the wake of tragic events, and it premiered the year following Mahler s death. The epic symphony opens and closes with extended, heartfelt slow movements guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. * no discounts available MAY 5/7 MENDELSSOHN: Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture SCHUMANN: Piano Concerto BRAHMS: Symphony No. 1 Lothar Zagrosek, conductor Javier Perianes, piano Mendelssohn s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage is a lovely romantic orchestral work, inspired by two Goethe poems. Schumann s Concerto requires a virtuoso pianist of the first rank and displays a remarkable sense of collaboration between soloist and orchestra. MAY 19/21 HAYDN: Symphony No. 46 MOZART: Concerto No. 10 for Two Pianos PROKOFIEV: Suite from Romeo and Juliet Joseph Young, conductor Christina & Michelle Naughton, piano Mozart probably composed the Concerto for Two Pianos to perform with his sister, Nannerl. Typical of Mozart s concertos, the work showcases both virtuoso technique and elegant expression. Romeo and Juliet is one of the Prokofiev s most beautiful and inspired creations. JUN 2/4 PHILIP GLASS: The American Four Seasons BERLIOZ: Symphonie fantastique Peter Oundjian, conductor Robert McDuffie, violin Philip Glass composed his Violin Concerto No. 2, The Four Seasons, for Robert McDuffie, who performs the work at these concerts. Berlioz Fantastic Symphony continues, almost two centuries after its premiere, to transport audiences on a breathtaking ride culminating in the hair-raising finale, the Dream of a Witches Sabbath. JUN 9/11/12 / BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 2 BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2 André Watts, piano Both the Brahms Second Piano Concerto and Symphony stand in sharp contrast to their immediate predecessors. A friend of Brahms characterized the Second Piano Concerto, composed 20 years after the First, as that of a grown man to the youth. OCT 16/17 Fri/Sat: 8pm CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR: A Tribute to The Beatles On August 18, 1965, the Fab Four came to Atlanta and rocked Atlanta Stadium, filled with over 34,000 screaming fans. 50 years later we bring back that excitement and energy to do something the original Beatles were never able to do play with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Classical Mystery Tour is a spot-on tribute to The Beatles that will feature iconic Beatles classics as well as hits from the original 1965 playlist. A groovy way to kick-off the POPS! Season! *OCT 30/31 Fri: 8pm/Sat: 8pm DANNY ELFMAN S Music From the Films of TIM BURTON featuring film clips Join us Halloween weekend for spooky music and film clips from one of the most prolific duos in film music. Danny Elfman s music can be heard in Tim Burton s creepiest films including Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and many more. What better way to get in to the ghoulish spirit than to experience this spinetingling musical adventure. No one will forget the opening title sequence of Star Wars. John Williams music is its own film character. In addition to the Star Wars movies, Williams has scored dozens of films including Superman, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park and War Horse. The son of Bucky Pizzarelli, John has toured with some of the biggest names in American music, and was named one of the top 10 performers in New York in 2014 by Time Magazine. MAR 18/19 Fri/Sat: 8pm TAPESTRY: The Carole King Songbook featuring Liz Callaway Carole King first became famous for writing hit songs, and then became a household name performing those hit songs herself. King is such a gifted songwriter that Paul McCartney and John Lennon once said they wanted to be songwriters like Carole King. Eventually Carole got her big break with Tapestry, which stayed on the US charts for more than six years. Liz Callaway leads this tribute to one of the most prolific song writers of her generation.

Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, Lerner and Loewe - these composers and lyricists broke ground in one of the most American forms of entertainment, Musical Theatre. 14 Oh to be young again! The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra offers something for everyone, including families. The Family Concerts are a wonderful way to introduce preschool and early elementary school children to classical music. For young musicians or those considering symphonic music, there s the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra the future of classical music. Family OCT 31 Sat: 2pm HALLOWEEN HIJINKS! Joseph Young, conductor This concert is sure to tickle your funny bone with mesmerizing favorites, including music from Harry Potter, The Sorcerer s Apprentice, Night on Bald Mountain and a few surprises! Boys and ghouls are invited to wear their costumes and muster the courage to try an instrument before the concert at the Instrument Petting Zoo. MAR 20 MUSICAL STORY TIME WITH THE ASO Joseph Young, conductor Music often tells a story, which is why so many stories have been adapted for orchestras.
