3 WELCOME Musica Viva s 2018 International Concert Season glitters with dazzling talent and unexpected gems. Canadian superstars of the Baroque, Tafelmusik, return to Australia with another incredible theatrical expedition in Bach and His World, their tribute to a musical genius and an exploration of the community and technology that enriched his life. Legendary German clarinettist Sabine Meyer makes a surprising appearance in the company of the remarkable Alliage Quintett for a program of orchestral favourites in brilliant arrangements written especially for this most unusual ensemble. Once an Australian, but now a leading virtuoso fêted the world over, violinist Ray Chen undertakes his second national tour for Musica Viva, this time with pianist Julien Quentin. Electrifying wizard of the mandolin Avi Avital joins the energetic young Giocoso String Quartet to present masterworks old and new. For more than 70 years the unparalleled Borodin Quartet has encapsulated generations of Russian string-playing tradition; with always renewed energy, it once more brings its trademark musical depth and perfection to our concert halls. The youngest contestant of the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Silver Medallist Joyce Yang, offers two powerhouse programs of scintillating piano music on her very first national concert tour. But if one star isn t enough, then take three, as violinist Nicola Benedetti, cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk form a piano trio on which to dream, in sparkling programs that combine the peerless trios of Brahms and Ravel with solo sonatas by Strauss and Prokofiev. Australian composition figures strongly through the season, with new works commissioned from Elena Kats- Chernin, Elizabeth Younan and Matthew Hindson, and repeat performances of Gordon Kerry s atmospheric Im Winde piano trio. It is a thrill to announce two special Gala Concerts in 2018 featuring one of the grand masters of the piano, Sir András Schiff. This legendary musician performs just one time each in Sydney and Melbourne, a rare coup for Musica Viva and a wonderful opportunity for Australian audiences. I try to make every season as diverse as possible, but it is hard to imagine a chamber music smorgasbord more multifarious than this. Small ensemble classical music is a refined form that attracts the most discerning audiences, and when the quality of both performers and repertoire is at its peak, the rewards for the listener are unequalled. 6 Program Overview A journey through musical fairytales, Fantasia mixes the talents of legendary clarinettist Sabine Meyer with the Alliage Quintett, a unique ensemble of four saxophones and a grand piano. This unexpected combination offers an extraordinary range of colours, orchestral in scope but with all the intimacy of the best chamber music. The inspired arrangements of Fantasia follow a delightful path full of wonder and dramatic characters, including Bernstein s exuberant Candide, Dukas unlucky little magician, and Russian fables reimagined by Stravinsky and Borodin. About the Artists Sabine Meyer is one of the reasons solo clarinettists exist at all. One of the first women to be offered principal positions with leading European orchestras, her extraordinary abilities took her on an exclusive path to become one of the most famous clarinet soloists ever. Though concertos have naturally been a large part of her career, she also has a special love for chamber music, which she is happy to share in this rare visit to Australia. Comprising four brilliant saxophone soloists and a charismatic pianist, the Alliage Quintett seeks out exceptionally blended sounds from its unusual line-up, with fabulous results. Walking the perfect line between serious virtuosity and light-hearted entertainment, the group will be heard by Australian audiences for the first time on this tour. The Quintett creates the extraordinary illusion of the sound of a big orchestra with four saxophones and a piano; joined by Sabine Meyer they create musical magic. 9 Avi Avital mandolin Giocoso String Quartet Sebastian Casleanu violin Teofil Todica violin Martha Windhagauer viola Bas Jongen cello Program Overview A solo superstar, an award-winning quartet, and music for the heart and the mind: the bright yet intimate sounds of Avi Avital s mandolin are a perfect foil for the warm strings of the Giocoso Quartet. This unusual combination demands fascinating repertoire, including two works written for Avi: David Bruce s tribute to the Celtic sun god, Cymbeline, and Elena Kats-Chernin s new piece, sparkling with her trademark theatricality. The Quartet also takes its turn in the spotlight in Schumann s classic masterpiece, a wordless epic poem which dives into the emotions with a beautiful slow movement and a wild finale. About the Artists Avi Avital is a groundbreaking virtuoso of the mandolin, taking his instrument to the great concert halls of the world and changing people s perceptions. Moving easily between foot-stomping folk dances and filigree Baroque concertos, his performances are celebrated for an all-embracing stage presence alongside compelling musicianship. The Giocoso String Quartet were winners of the Musica Viva and Audience prizes at the 2015 Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, where their zesty, characterful playing stood out in a crowded field. Since then, the group based in Berlin has steadily built a reputation through performances across Europe and more recently into Asia, including Tokyo and Seoul. 13 Program Overview Joyce Yang is one of the leading pianists in the newest generation of virtuosi. Appropriately enough, for her first full Australian recital tour she presents music that pianists love to play, and piano lovers love to hear. All the composers were themselves masters of the keyboard, and their deep understanding of the instrument is manifest in these richly characterful works. A world premiere from Australian composer Elizabeth Younan, written especially for Joyce, adds a new chapter to this spectacular overview of music for a most beloved instrument. Her attention to detail and clarity is as impressive as her agility, balance and velocity. Washington Post About the Artist Joyce Yang was the Silver Medallist and the youngest competitor in the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition, and has since gone on to countless other accolades and a skyrocketing career. Her warm personality and unexpectedly mature ability to convey intense feeling has put her ahead of her cohort, a group where technical brilliance is a given, and outstanding musicianship and flair make all the difference. 14 Program Overview A Ray Chen recital is always a popular event. Moving easily between heartfelt artistry and jaw-dropping violin pyrotechnics, his programs offer a terrific celebration of the violin in all its moods. With playing so comfortable and assured, composer Matthew Hindson was free to create a work where there are no technical limitations making for an exciting world premiere! About the Artists Ray Chen grew up in Brisbane and moved to the USA in his teens to pursue intensive violin studies. Since then he has carved a niche as a heart-stopping virtuoso, appearing as a soloist with great orchestras around the world. He is joined for these recitals by his regular playing partner, the acclaimed French pianist Julien Quentin, making his first tour of Australia. 17 About the Artists The Borodin Quartet is an extraordinary living tradition. The group recently celebrated its 70th anniversary, and while of course individual players have changed in that time, each one has embraced its storied performance history, and each one has been carefully integrated to preserve the famous sound of this remarkable institution. In our fast-paced, throwaway society, it is a rare thing to be able to pause for the length of a concert, to honour and appreciate such a rich heritage brought to life in the present. Program Overview The Borodin Quartet s special relationship with Shostakovich his comments from first performances are scattered throughout their scores means their interpretations carry tremendous gravitas. Program One highlights the Classical threads that underpin Shostakovich s music, from Haydn to his pupil Beethoven, and then onwards; no serious composer of string quartets can ignore these masters of the form, and Shostakovich was very serious indeed. Program Two looks to the freer lyricism of the Romantic period, all about emotions, with Tchaikovsky s gloriously Russian work and Wolf s sunny Serenade: they form a perfect balance to the darkness of Shostakovich s final quartet, which consists only of six slow movements unfurling in a timeless, unforgettable experience. PROGRAM ONE Melbourne Weekend, Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney Weekend HAYDN String Quartet in B minor, op 33 no 1 SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet no 9 in E-flat major, op 117 BEETHOVEN String Quartet no 13 in B-flat major, op 130 PROGRAM TWO Brisbane, Melbourne Weekday, Sydney Weekday, Perth TCHAIKOVSKY String Quartet no 1 WOLF Italian Serenade SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet no 15 in E-flat minor, op 144 TOURING 20 SEPT 9 OCT For concert dates see page 22 Brisbane concert presented in association with Brisbane Festival Fierce, formidable and authoritative the gold standard for Russian chamber music. 18 About the Artists When is a trio not just a trio? When it is this one, comprising three stellar soloists. In an arresting ending to the Musica Viva season, the matchless combined talents of Nicola Benedetti, Leonard Elschenbroich and Alexei Grynyuk light up the stage. This is chamber music made by an A-team of young guns; and played with love, because they insist on making room for its presence in their busy solo schedules. Having garnered glowing reviews across the northern hemisphere, the Trio makes its southern debut in this tour. Program Overview Understandably, given who they are, this ensemble s programs contain not just trios. There is a diversity of forms, and a chance to better appreciate each performer, in works for accompanied violin and cello. To demonstrate their joy in playing in threes, however, they have chosen two of the great masterworks of the trio repertoire by Brahms and Ravel and a relative newcomer, Gordon Kerry s icy, rustling evocation of impending winter, first felt in the wind. If any piano trio could achieve star status, it s surely this one. 20 Elena Kats-Chernin One of Australia s leading composers, Elena Kats-Chernin s energetic, vivid music conveys an arresting mix of wit and melancholy. Firmly grounded in the classical tradition, yet with irresistible elements of cabaret, tango, ragtime and klezmer, her pieces have a distinctive individual character. Elena has written for nearly every major genre, including concertos, ballet and operatic works, many of them premiered internationally; and when she channels that innate warm-hearted theatricality into the smaller scale of chamber music, and mingles it with the charisma of Avi Avital and the Giocoso String Quartet, something delightful is sure to emerge. Elena s new work is commissioned by Kim Williams am Elizabeth Younan Still a postgraduate student at the Sydney Conservatorium, Elizabeth Younan has garnered numerous accolades for her music, including the Jean Bogan Youth Prize for Piano Composition, the Ignaz Friedman Memorial Prize, and the Fine Music Young Composer Award. Her works have been performed by Michael Kieran Harvey, the Goldner String Quartet, and Arcadia Winds (including an international broadcast). Elizabeth s artistically ambitious, joyously adventurous music makes an ideal match for the fleetfingered virtuosity of Joyce Yang. Elizabeth s new work is commissioned by Julian Burnside AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS Matthew Hindson am Matthew is one of Australia s most frequently performed composers. Drawing happily on sources as diverse as Baroque music and Metallica, his music found a ready audience with its gleeful, propulsive style. Such works lend themselves well to dance, and his music has been taken up by the Birmingham Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Ballett Schindowski and the Australian Ballet, as well as many Australian orchestras and ensembles. The emotional directness and immediacy of Matthew s compositions suit the assurance and dynamism of Ray Chen s playing. Matthew s new work is commissioned for Musica Viva Australia Gordon Kerry Gordon Kerry lives on a hill in north-eastern Victoria, from which he consistently produces extraordinary and internationally renowned music in many forms. Much of his work is informed by literature, especially poetry he himself is an excellent writer as well as composer and he uses it not just as vocal text, but as a point of inspiration for purely instrumental works. Im Winde takes its title from a Friedrich Hölderlin poem The Middle of Life, which celebrates a fruitful autumn but hints fearfully at a coming winter felt in the wind. It was first performed by Trio Jean Paul in Wigmore Hall, and was toured by Trio Dali for Musica Viva in The Benedetti Elschenbroich Grynyuk Trio have embraced it for their 2018 Australian appearances. Im Winde was composed during a Fellowship with support from the Australia Council for the Arts 20 musicaviva.com.au/2018

33 MORE ON MUSICA VIVA Musica Viva is Australia s oldest independent professional performing arts organisation. Our story began in 1945 as a chamber music organisation focused on just one ensemble. Over the years we have evolved to embrace ensemble music of all styles and genres, presenting leading Australian and international artists to concert audiences and school students across the country. Today, our activities embrace digital technologies to reach an even wider audience, and we are at the forefront of artist development inspiring musicians and audiences alike in a shared passion for ensemble music of quality, diversity, challenge and joy. MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOOLS Musica Viva In Schools has been setting the standard in music education since We are dedicated to ensuring all Australian children have the opportunity to experience the joy of music, and we support teachers with professional development and curriculumlinked resources. COFFEE CONCERTS A morning concert series, presented in Sydney and Melbourne, featuring performances by leading Australian and international chamber musicians, including pre-concert tea, coffee and cake. MUSICA VIVA FESTIVAL Presented in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, our biennial chamber music festival showcases the best local and international chamber music artists in four days of concerts, talks and masterclasses. By providing them with extensive mentoring and extraordinary opportunities, these brilliant and curious musicians are equipped with advocacy tools, entrepreneurial skills, platforms, audiences and a global network. This gives them the foundation to create new work that will shape and inspire cultural life in the 21st century. HILDEGARD PROJECT The Hildegard Project in support of women in composition was launched in April 2015, and was made possible by generous initial funding given by Katherine Grinberg in honour of the late Adrienne Nagy and her sister Yolanda (Nagy) Daniel. Together with the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composition, and the support of many kind donors around Australia, Musica Viva is able to continue its proud tradition of creating new Australian work across all of its activities. COUNTRYWIDE Musica Viva s innovative regional touring program partners with performing arts centres, volunteer music societies and conservatoriums to deliver a range of exceptional music experiences to thousands of regional Australians each year. MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION In partnership with the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Australian National Academy of Music, Musica Viva is the presenter of the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.
