2 Thursday 19 April 7.30pm for 8pm talk The LODGE, SHERE, GU5 9JA FESTIVAL INSIGHT EVENING Presented by Sandy Burnett, musician, author and former BBC Radio 3 presenter Sandy returns to the Festival to explore the music of this year's season in a fascinating conversation that will sparkle with good humour and scholarship. Sandy is one of the UK s most authoritative broadcasters in the field of classical music. His broadcasts, interviews, and lectures are all underpinned by the practical understanding that comes from his busy life as a practising musician. Mozart, String Quartet No.22 in B-flat minor K.589 L. JanACek, ^ String Quartet No.1, Kreutzer Sonata F. Mendelssohn, String Quartet in F minor, Op.80 Widely regarded as one of the world s greatest string ensembles, the Belcea Quartet have wowed critics for twenty years. There s a huge range of colour in their quieter playing, but in louder faster passages the tendency is to go straight for the music s jugular. Mendelssohn, Songs withou t words arranged for four hands by Czerny, Op.30, No.1 F. Mendelssohn, Andante et Allegro Brillant, Op. 92 for four hands J. Brahms, Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52 and Op. 65 Love songs for voices and piano some written for four hands will make for an enchanting evening in a beautiful setting. Brahms Liebeslieder are written in waltz style and this evening s programme will also include equally romantic works by Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Lieder specialist mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley, will join Festival favourites and top-flight opera singers Anna Patalong, Ben Nelson and Guildford s own Paul Curievici. International soloist Wu Qian and Festival Director Tessa Marchington perform together on the piano. Tickets 25, 5 for under 21's. 5 friday, 11 MAY 7.30PM HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, GUILDFORD, GU1 3RR The Sitkovetsky Trio and Friends The Sitkovetsky Trio Alexander Sitkovetsky Wu Qian and Isang Enders with Michael Collins, clarinet, and Katy Woolley principal horn from the Philharmonia Orchestra, London PROGRAMME I. Stravinsky, L Histoire du Soldat J. Brahms, Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op.40 Andy Akiho, Lost on Chiaroscuro Street (European Premier) L. van Beethoven, Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 70, No. 2 How fitting that Brahms was inspired to write the first movement of the Horn Trio whilst walking in the woods and that we should have this emotionally expressive piece played during this Festival which celebrates our own Surrey Hills. This exciting programme also includes the purity of one of Beethoven s Piano Trios and the European premiere of a work by the celebrated young American composer Andy Akiho. The concert opens with Stravinsky s concert suite from his elegiac 1918 composition L Histoire du Soldat, based on a Russian folk tale. The much admired Sitkovetsky Trio, recently returned from an acclaimed Australasian tour, are joined by pre-eminent clarinetist Michael Collins and horn player Katy Wooley, who makes her first appearance at the Festival. 6 saturday, 12 MAY 7.30PM St Teresa s, Effingham, KT24 5PN GALA CONCERT The London Mozart Players conducted by Leonard Elschenbroich with Leticia Moreno, violin, and Maxim Rysanov, viola. PROGRAMME W. A. Mozart, Don Giovanni Overture W. A. Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante, K. 364 G. Rossini, Barber of Seville Overture L. van Beethoven, Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93 World renowned cellist Leonard Elschenbroich will conduct the superb London Mozart Players with star soloists, from Madrid violinist Leticia Moreno and Ukrainian-British violist Maxim Rysanov. Moreno - Fiery interpretation, exalted lyricism and expressivity. Captivating power, virtuosity and brilliance. (El Pais) "Rysanov is a prince among viola players..." (Gramophone August 2017) In the Sinfonia Concertante, Mozart has written one of the most influential works of his early career giving equal billing to viola and violin. Along with two much-loved opera overtures this fabulous evening concludes with Beethoven's light hearted Symphony No.8. Tickets 29, 5 for under 21's.
