4 Ligatures How does a ligature affect the sound? Every BG Ligature provides a distinct sound for each situation and style of music Musicians frequently ask: Can a ligature really influence the sound of my instrument?. Can a small metal or synthetic piece change the color, the projection or the sound? The answer is YES. The sound is generated through the vibrations both of the mouthpiece and the reed, therefore the ligature is a key piece holding both together. The vibrations between the mouthpiece, the ligature and the reed make the notes easier, cleaner and faster to articulate. The ligature helps the musician to articulate the notes. The material (metal or synthetic), its density, plating, the point of pressure on the reed and many other factors are all decisive when talking about the color of the sound and it s projection. It suffices to make a simple comparison: if we hit our leg with our hand, we will create a dampened sound, if we hit a table with our hand, we will create a cleaner-brighter sound. The same thing happens when talking about the existing relation between the ligature and the sound that we are going to obtain. The leather ligature or synthetic leather provides a rounder sound while the metal ligature helps us obtain higher volume and projection in the sound. These days musicians must have more than one ligature since they will need a different kind of ligature depending on their work or the situation they are in. It is not the same to perform in a small concert hall or in a big auditorium. The needs of a soloist are different than when performing in an ensemble, whether the style is jazz or classical. Every BG Ligature provides a distinct sound for each situation and style of music. Choosing the ligature will depend on the sound that the musician desires, the music he is playing or the auditorium where the concert takes place. BG has studied the acoustics and the behavior of the materials since BG s ligatures provide a balanced sound in all registers. Today, all musicians need to have more than one ligature as every ligature satisfies specific needs. 4

5 Ligatures How to choose a ligature For a long time it was thought that the ligature was to maintain pressure against the mouthpiece. Nowadays, we know that this is false and that both the mouthpiece and the ligature vibrate slightly and have an important role in the creation, projection and color of the sound. Each BG ligature provides a different sound for each moment. Therefore, the process of choosing the ligature is extremely important. Try different BG ligature models. It is important to remember that the ligatures made out of synthetic leather are preferred when playing in small concert rooms, chamber music, bands and orchestra, etc.. On the other hand, metal ligatures are preferred when playing in big rooms, as a soloist, and during those times when you need more volume. In addition, no matter the model, the presence of gold (plated gold) in the ligatures make the results even better. Remember: All BG ligatures are handmade in France, under strict tolerances (weight, metal surface, design, etc ). All designs are registered. HOW TO CHOOSE A LIGATURE 1. Play music that you know well with your own ligature first to create your sound reference in the room where you are testing. 2. Under the same conditions, change only one parameter or component at a time and test the new ligature for smoothness in transition between registers, consistent volume and its sound quality in the lower, middle, and upper ranges. 3. At the same time, listen for the subtle differences when playing pianissimo and fortissimo passages. 4. Test how easily you can play staccato. 5. If possible, it is always better to play test with another player who knows your regular sound and can assist you to appreciate the following 3 key points: a-) How you feel while playing b.-) what you hear when you play and c.-) what the audience hears. 6. Try various ligature models. Different types of ligatures meet differents requirements. 7. Remember: The best ligature is the one that fits you - Franck Bichon. 5

6 Ligatures Why does BG only make inverted ligatures? Sound comes from the vibrations of the reed and mouthpiece. We optimize them by using exclusively one screw ligatures. Reeds vibrate from top to bottom thanks to empty canals. Any pressure point on the reed has an effect on the sound. Using screws in contact with the reed damages / alters vibrations. Each BG ligature gives different sounds. The best ligature is the one that fits you - Franck Bichon Two musicians playing with the same set up will have different sounds because of the personal way that they blow and hold their embouchure. Depending on what sound you want or what setting you are playing in, this will affect your ligature choice. Always try several ligatures. 6

7 Ligatures Fabric ligatures vs Metal ligatures? Fabric ligatures and metal ligatures cannot be compared. One is not better than the other, they are simply different. Studies done by BG since 1985 have concluded that the type of ligature used depends on the setting: studio or auditorium, rehearsal or performance. The same way we use different type of shoes to go to work, to attend an event or to practice a sport, we will choose a different type of ligature depending on the setting: performance as soloist, chamber music, rehearsal or recording session. 8 Ligatures One ligature for each situation & style of music Every musician must have several ligatures because every BG ligature provides a different sound for each situation and type of music. In Fabric Ligatures, the presence of the metal on the base plate increases the brightness and the projection of the sound. With just a rubber base, the warm sound is strengthened. Each ligature satisfies specific needs. Metal ligatures are perfect for big concert halls and for soloists that need more sound. Gold plated provides a bigger response and a rounder sound. Fabric ligatures are recommended for small rooms or when looking for a more intimate sound. They are perfect for ensemble works. Mr. Serge Bichon, Franck's dad, was a formal student of the master Marcel Mule, who created the French Classic school of saxophone. Serge BICHON, now retired, has been teaching at Lyon conservatory, France, and among other students Serge has been the formal teacher of famous artists including Claude Delange and Habanera Quartet members, and an independent adviser consultant for famous French reed manufacturer. 27 Cleaning Swabs & Care Cloths Why should we keep our instrument clean? The factors that affect health should be reason more than enough to keep our instrument clean The lack of cleanliness in the wind instrument may severely affect the musician s health. In a research, presented in November 2013 by the ACAAI (American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology), researchers proved that musicians may develop a chest allergic disease as a result of the fungus that grow inside the wind instruments, due to lack of cleanliness after its use. Known as Saxophone Lung, it is a type of pneumonia in which the person affected develops an allergic lung disease when in contact with the fungus that grows inside the wind instruments that are not cleaned after use. Recently, a musician from Atlanta, who admitted to not cleaning his instrument, had a cough and wheezing for over a year. Treatments did not work. The X rays showed that his lungs were in critical condition and even lymphatic ganglion calcified. But this is not new, in 2011, researchers from the university of Tutfs, directed by Dr. Stuart Levy, analyzed 20 wind instruments that were not cleaned correctly and found multiple germs, including the one responsible for tuberculosis, that can remain active from several hours to several days in clarinets and oboes. The factors that affect health should be reason more than enough to keep your instrument clean. 27 In addition to this, have we thought about how valuable and important the instrument must be for the musician? The instrument is the musician s work tool. He will spend many hours of work, cooperation and company with it. A work tool well taken care of, will provide much more reliable performance than if it is not well maintained.the musician on stage risks his/ her reputation in front of demanding audiences. Can you imagine the resounding fail if there were a mistake with the instrument because of its lack of maintenance? If the pads are not carefully dried sooner rather than later not only they will make noise and not close properly, they will fail much sooner. If the bodies are not efficiently dried, cracks that will ruin the instrument will happen If the keys are not periodically cleaned, they will work slowly, and irregularly. The instrument may have a higher or a lower price according with each person s budget, but if you take care of your instrument you, therefore, save money having to repair it, you will be able to invest that money professionally, purchasing accessories, books, etc., or personally and not related to music. 42 Straps Musicians health, instrument safety BG has the right strap for every performance situation Every day, we pay more attention to the pain associated with playing a musical instrument. Throughout the years, musicians spend many hours with an extra heavy weight over their cervical spine, shoulders and their right hand thumb. With time, injuries that could have been prevented or even avoided happen. In the best of cases these injuries must be treated in order for the symptoms to disappear, needing frequent medical check-ups, especially for those who's main activity is music. BG designs each of it's straps thinking about both the musician's health and the instrument's safety. To take care of the musicians health, we distribute the weight of the instrument to avoid injuring vital areas of the musician's anatomy and so that the body posture is as natural as possible when playing. Straps like the Harness or Yoke have revolutionized how the musician lives within his or her instrument. The models that are adapted to men's, women's and children's anatomy allow thousands of people to enjoy their musical instrument at their best condition. We shall not forget the injures that can be caused by the weight of the instrument over the right hand's thumb. During the many hours of rehearsal, the thumb must support a vertical pressure in a very specific point. The anatomy is not ready for it. The musician starts their formation at an early age, when the bone structure has not yet developed. To take care for the body, there is nothing better than using the highest quality straps. All of the BG straps are handmade in France, using the best materials that go through rigorous quality controls. They are examined in three independent controls BG straps are made to withstand the rigorous lifestyle of today s busy musicians. They have double backstitches with more than 42 stitches per point, what makes deterioration almost impossible. To prevent fraying, all the threads are burnt up to three times. BG straps are resistant and very comfortable. There is a BG strap for each moment and situation. 43 Straps Cotton, Absorption, Comfort In order to reach the highest performance, the musician must be completely focused on the music and the instrument. He cannot be distracted by external factors In hot and humid climate, during a hot day or under the lights on stage it is very important to feel very comfortable in order to remain focused. Cotton is one of the oldest and more famous fabrics in the world, it goes back to Egypt and prehistorically Mexico. Softness, versatility and lightness characterize it. Cotton can absorb up to 27 times its weight in water and it is breathable. When it comes to marching bands, the musician's neck is under a bigger pressure that increases with each of the steps he takes. BG straps are a great help and provide an extra protection to the cervical spine in the neck area to prevent injuries. A BG strap will be the musician's best ally, providing the highest comfort possible to prevent the musician from any distraction allowing him to focus on studying, rehearsing or performing at their highest efficiency. Cotton allows the air to flow, it absorbs the sweat and takes it to the surface. This is described as the cotton's breathing and it is considered very appealing, specially in hot climates. BG straps have inside, thick and comfortable cotton paddings, (except the model Flex) that absorb sweat, providing high comfort.. The straps exterior, made in nylon and leather (depending on the model) and the inside made in cotton, are sewed together by BG craftsmen with a double stitching of 42 stitches per point. This makes the quality, duration and resistance of the BG straps absolutely amazing. BG analyzes each detail and subjects each of its products to numerous tests before handing it to the musician. Cotton padding minimizes the fatigue effect, which allows the musician to rehearse or perform longer with higher performance. All BG Straps are hand made in France 43

44 Straps Details that make BG different Connectors are the link between the strap and the instrument. The safety of the instrument and the comfort and mobility of the musician depend on them. BG has studied, through hundreds of tests, the most practical connection system for each instrument. BG straps for Bb and Eb clarinets come with two very flexible and resistant leather connectors. In case of loss these connectors can be bought separately since they can be found in the BG replacement catalog. CONNECTORS BG offers three solutions for Bass clarinets, depending on the strap chosen, with 1 or 2 metal hooks or with 1 metal hook or 1 leather connector. Every detail is taken care of at BG. We offer two different straps / sling support for clarinet. Both help to limit pressure on the thumb rest, arms, shoulders and to prevent neck strain, thus helping to breathe better. The most frequently asked question among the clarinetists is: should I use elasticity or not int he sling"? Elastic straps provide more movement, they prevent bad back postures and help to breathe better. Regular straps improve the embouchure control. ELASTIC or REGULAR STRAP? A teacher can feel more comfortable teaching with a regular strap and find out that during a concert an elastic sling will favor their general performance. 44
