Originally conceived of and inaugurated by the Cavani String Quartet, former participants in IQS are linked throughout the solo, chamber music and orchestral world. Ensembles whose members participated in IQS include Miro, Verona, Omer, Linden, Daedalus, Catalyst, Afiara, Aeolus, Maia, Ehnes, Telegraph, Biava, Pacifica, Jupiter and Harlem String Quartets as well as members of The Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, A Far Cry, ECHO and Toronto Symphony, to name a few. The Seminar is designed to focus on the interpretation and performance of one composer or thematically linked repertoire. Great emphasis is placed on creating a deeply collaborative and empathetic environment. Fundamental to this approach is the application of specific ensemble rehearsal techniques developed by the Cavani Quartet and Peter Salaff, and the humble devotion to the art of superlative chamber music playing. Quartets are coached by the Cavani String Quartet, Artist-in-Residence at CIM, and Peter Salaff, Director of String and Piano Chamber Music.

6 ABOUT THE DIRECTORS Hailed as brilliant and passionate performers, the CAVANI STRING QUARTET recently earned this accolade: Their artistic excellence, their generous spirit, and their fervent ambassadorship for great music make them unique among America s greatest string quartets. They may be the single most valuable role model for the classical chamber music field in our time, an inspiration to fellow musicians and audiences across the country. (Detroit Chamber Music Society) The quartet has the honor of being a winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the prestigious Fischoff, Banff and Coleman competitions as well as being chosen for The Cleveland Quartet Award at the Eastman School of Music. Described by the Washington Post as completely engrossing, powerful and elegant the quartet s impressive thirty year legacy has garnered significant recognition including the Ohio Governors Award for the Arts, Musical America Magazine s Young Artists of the Year and the Guarneri String Quartet Award for Artistic Excellence, in both 2005 and 2011, from Chamber Music America. The Cavani Quartet received an ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and has commissioned, premiered and performed the music of more than thirty living composers. Nationally recognized for their superlative and unique approach as both performers and teaching-artists, they have received more than ten Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Awards to engage audiences of all ages in communities across the country. The Quartet has performed in all fifty states. Appearances include Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, Corcoran Gallery of Art and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Ambassador Series in Los Angeles, Muziekcentrum De Ijsbreker in Amsterdam, Festival de L Epau in France and the Honolulu Chamber Music Society. The Quartet has been featured on National Public Radio s Performance Today and St. Paul Sunday Morning, as well as syndicated NPR quiz show Says You. Cavani Quartet recordings, including works by Bartók, Dvořák, Schumann, Brahms, Erb, Chausson, Brouwer and Primosch, are available on the Azica, Gasparo, New World, Albany and Pantheon labels. The Cavani Quartet maintains a regular performance and residency schedule at a number of the world s most prestigious festivals and organizations, including The Perlman Music Program, Aspen Music Festival, New World Symphony, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Kniesel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Interlochen Center for

7 the Arts, Madeline Island Music Festival, Chautauqua Festival, Detroit Chamber Music Society, Kohl Mansion in San Francisco and McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University. As a result of their extensive experience in chamber music education and advocacy, the Cavani Quartet was invited to participate as a leadership ensemble in the first national Chamber Music Educator/ Ensemble Seminar sponsored by Chamber Music America. Formed in 1984, the Cavani String Quartet was appointed as Artists-in-Residence at the world renowned Cleveland Institute of Music in the fall of At CIM, the Quartet has developed the Intensive Quartet Seminar, Apprentice Quartet Program, NEW Quartet Program, The Art of Engagement: Careers and Leadership in Music and the Winter Chamber Music Festival, for student ensembles devoted to the serious study of chamber music. The Cavani Quartet is proud and privileged to have mentored members of many distinguished ensembles who have participated in these programs including the Jupiter, Miro, Dali, Verona, Daedalus, Catalyst, Omer, Fry Street, Biava, Telegraph, Ehnes, Maia, Linden and Afiara String Quartets, as well as members of the Atlanta Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Active performers in their own community, the Cavani Quartet was awarded a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Project Support Grant for their innovative Beethoven & Brotherhood Project, performing the complete quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven in sixteen neighborhood libraries throughout Cleveland. The Quartet s acclaimed series Breaking Barriers with Bartók featured the complete quartets of Béla Bartók in a lecture-demonstration format, illuminating Bartók s work as an ethnomusicologist and humanitarian. In collaboration with Tri-C Performing Arts Series, the quartet were recipients of a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Grant to perform their cross-cultural program COLLAGE: Music & Poetry, with poet and Kent State University Professor of Pan African Studies Mwatabu Okantah. Other innovative programs include CONFLUENCE: New Music by Women Composers, The Art of Listening: Music as Color, as well as school workshops, MAP: Music, Art and Poetry and TEAM UP with MUSIC. The Quartet regularly provides their workshop, Coaching Strategies and Techniques: Building Empowered and Collaborative Teams by Applying Principles of Chamber Music Pedagogy for business schools and Executive MBA classes around the country including The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. The

8 Cavani Quartet's chamber music rehearsal techniques and mentorship skills have garnered national acclaim, and in collaboration with Dr. Dorianne Cotter Lockard, will be publishing a book, Empowered Performers: Rehearsal Techniques and Coaching Strategies for Musicians. The Quartet has served as Visiting Artists-in-Residence at the University of Texas, Austin; University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale; University of California, Riverside; McDuffie Center for Strings; University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program and Quartet in Residence for The Chamber Music Society of Detroit. They have served on the Advisory Board of Amateur Chamber Music Players and currently serves on the Honorary Board of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Last season the Cavani Quartet was honored to participate in The Violins of Hope Project violinsofhopecle.org. For more information, please visit cavani.org. ~ ~ ~ PETER SALAFF, Director, String Chamber Music, was a founding member of the Cleveland Quartet, with whom he has received seven GRAMMY Award nominations, a GRAMMY award and Best of the Year awards from Time and Stereo Review for recordings of more than 50 chamber works on major labels. He has performed numerous concerts with the Quartet, including many tours of the former Soviet Union, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey and Israel, in addition to tours across the U.S. and Canada. Salaff has coached chamber music and given master classes in many conservatories and universities in the U.S., as well as in Germany, Japan, Israel and New Zealand. He has taught as a performing faculty member at the University of Concepcion, Chile, State University of New York at Buffalo, Eastman School of Music and during summers, at Interlochen, Michigan, Kneisel Hall Music Festival, Chamber Music in the Mountains at Echo Glen, Aspen Music Festival, Norfolk Festival, Killington Music Festival, PhoenixPhest and Schleswig Holstein Music Festival in Germany. Salaff now spends his summers teaching and performing at the Music Academy of the West. Since 2012 he has taught at the Perlman Music Program. He has been a judge at many chamber music competitions, including the London International String Quartet Competition, Fischoff Competition, Yellow Springs Competition and Coleman Competition.
