4 Special Effects for Handchimes by Dr. Paul Rosene The use of handchimes, both in stand alone ensembles and as an interesting addition to the handbell sound, is widespread. Composers, arrangers and directors are finding new ways to include the heavenly sounds of the modern handchime within handbell compositions. While the standard technique required to play handchimes is understood, many directors are unsure of how to achieve certain special effects with handchimes. After years working with hundreds of handchime groups, Dr. Paul Rosene has developed an approach to solving this apparent dilemma. Special Effects for Handchimes offers his experience to handchime directors to help explain these special effects, with descriptions of the techniques for successful use with handchimes. Techniques covered in this unique resource include martellato, thumb damp, tap pluck, gyro, mart lift, shake, trill, and swing.
