HB0060 How Can I Keep From Singing? 8 The Singing Bell effect called for in this arrangement makes use of a technique adapted from the tradition of the singing bowls (also known as Himalayan bowls or rin gongs in Japan). The tradition of singing bowls dates from at least the tenth or twelfth centuries; however, bronze bells from Asia are known to exist even earlier, so the practice may actually have started around the eighth century. Singing bowls are a type of bell, specifically classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound by rubbing the outer edge with a wooden stick. Singing bowls were historically made in Tibet, Nepal, India, Bhutan, China, Japan and Korea; today they are made in Nepal, India, Japan and Korea. The best known types are from the Himalayan region and are often called Tibetan singing bowls. THE TECHNIQUE: Hold the handbell with the non-dominant hand, away from the body so that the casting may vibrate freely. With a wooden stick (a piece of 1 ¼-inch dowel cut into a 10-inch length works well and is obtainable at any local home improvement center) held in the dominant hand, rub the outside rim in a circular motion in either direction, keeping an even pressure. Gently increase the speed as the casting begins to vibrate, and as the sound grows. Decreasing the speed slightly as the vibrations become stronger (and the resulting sound becomes louder) allows the wooden stick to remain in complete contact with the handbell. To generate sound in a quicker manner, tap the casting lightly with the stick to begin the vibration before rubbing the rim. The tapping technique is especially effective on larger handbells. HB0060 How Can I Keep From Singing? The Singing Bell Risers Our risers raise the music above the table, helping ringers see the director. Use them with an Acrylic, Metal or Notebook Music Stand.
