1 Section 1: Some good resources that feature music for all levels of players: Royal Conservatory of Music Clarinet Series ( This series of books is broken into several grade levels, with preparatory and Level 1 for new players, Level 2 & 3 for easier intermediate, 4 6 for harder intermediate and Gr. 7 and up is more advanced. The Repertoire books have an excellent mix of solo music, usually with piano music, as well as a CD to hear how the music should sound. The Etudes give you a great mix of etudes for solo clarinet from a variety of well-respected clarinet etude collections. Virtual Sheet Music ( This online resource has thousands of pieces for music for clarinet, at a variety of levels. There are many of the standard solo pieces for clarinet The Mozart Concerto, Weber Concerti, Debussy Premiere Rhapsody, Brahms Sonatas and more. There are also many good ensemble pieces duets, trios, quartets not only for clarinet groups, but for clarinet with other instruments. There are also some good themed music sections wedding, patriotic, Christmas (and other holidays). You can buy any piece of music for a small fee, or buy an annual membership that lets you download as much music as you like for a year. IMSLP ( This online resource is a resource of downloadable music that is available in public domain (meaning not copyrighted). There is quite a variety of music uploaded by users worldwide. You can find some great gems in there, although the print quality is variable depending upon the source. You can download for free if you are willing to wait a short time, or you can buy an annual membership at a small fee for instant downloads.

2 Section 2: Beginning Clarinet Resources As a new clarinetist, the most important thing is to be learning the instrument with the best habits that will create success (and make it easier to play). There are many good resources to help with this. A good private teacher will help you to get started. Here are some other useful resources: Band Methods (such as Standard Of Excellence - Bruce Pearson) clarinet-sheet-music/304760?aff_id= Most school band methods do a great job of giving you fingering charts that are easy to read, and explaining how to read music. Since they are not designed specifically for the clarinet, they may not give you all of the clarinet fundamentals, but are helpful to help teach you notes and music. How To Play Clarinet For Beginners Michelle Anderson This downloadable book will help you to get started with the best habits, and also contains a link to give you access to a free series of videos to show you how you can learn these habits on your clarinet. You can download it here for free: Galper Clarinet Method Bk. 1 (Book 2 is good also) - Avrahm Galper Book-1/ This book is written by a well-respected clarinetist and gives you some great music and pointers to get started. Royal Conservatory Clarinet Repertoire - Preparatory and Level 1 (see information above in Section 1) Tunes For Two, for Clarinet - arr. Christopher Tambling This is a great duet book, but also works very well for a solo player. There are many famous melodies here skillfully written in notes that are among the first that clarinetists learn. Great for new players to play famous music relatively quickly. Music Through Time - Paul Harris Book 1 Paul Harris has written a series of clarinet solos at varying levels of

3 difficulty. These are clarinet solos, with piano accompaniment (although they sound great alone as well). Each book covers many eras of classical music so you will find a nice blend of musical styles. Section 3: Intermediate Clarinet Music I have split intermediate into this level, and the slightly more challenging level in Section 4. However, many of these resources may contain easier and harder music within one book, so it is worth looking at both sections. 60 Rambles For Clarinet - Leon Lester Leon Lester was a superb clarinetist who also composed for the clarinet. These short pieces for solo clarinet are fun and interesting to play. Take Ten - Popular Pieces from Bach to Bacharach - arr. James Rae James Rae has written many good collections for clarinet that I like. I recommend several of his books to my students. This one has a great cross section of solo pieces at a very accessible level of playing. There is a piano accompaniment book, but it is satisfying to play as a solo performer as well. Music Through Time Paul Harris - Book 2 larinet+paul+harris?aff_id= Paul Harris has written a series of clarinet solos at varying levels of difficulty. These are clarinet solos, with piano accompaniment (although they sound great alone as well). Each book covers many eras of classical music so you will find a nice blend of musical styles. Clarinet Solos Vol. 1 - Thea King This series of solo pieces, with piano accompaniment, are well arranged for the clarinet. They are fun to work on alone, or with piano.

4 Selected Duets for Clarinet Vol. 1 Voxman This is a classic set of duets for two clarinetists, and they are great arrangements. I often use these with my students, and assign them the top line (which is usually the melody). They enjoy working on the pieces alone, and then we can play them as duets during our lessons together. If you have a clarinetist friend to play with, definitely check these out! Clarinet Twosome - Leon Lester These duets by Leon Lester are very well-written, and fun to play. Although they are not technically very demanding, they sound great. I recommend these to more advanced players who just want something fun and relatively easy to play as well. These do not work as well for one player since both parts share the melody. Chamber Music for Three Clarinets Vol. 1 Voxman This is an excellent set of trio music for clarinetists at a very playable level. There are also some trio books in this series that allow you to play with other instruments. Royal Conservatory Clarinet Repertoire - Levels 2-4 (see information above in Section 1) Section 4: Slightly Harder Intermediate Clarinet Music Here are some other great clarinet resources that in general, are slightly more challenging than the books above. However, many of these also have some easier music within them and are worth checking out. Melodious and Progressive Studies, Bk. 1 - David Hite David Hite has written many good books for the clarinet. This one has several clarinet etudes in many different keys, as well as a good set of scale resources at the back. Clarinet Level 5-8 Etudes (Royal Conservatory) sheet-music/ ?aff_id=532525

Solos for the Clarinet Player - arr. Christmann (there is a version with CD accompaniment) There is a wide range of clarinet solos, with piano accompaniment in this collection. Some are mainstream clarinet solos, and some are adapted from other instruments. This is a great resource, and now comes with a CD of the accompaniment (played by a real piano). Clarinet Solos Vol. 2 - Thea King This is a nice collections of clarinet solos that come from a variety of sources. Arranged by a skilled clarinetist, they are very fun to play. Comes with a piano accompaniment book. Music Through Time Paul Harris - Book 4 larinet+paul+harris?aff_id= Paul Harris has written a series of clarinet solos at varying levels of difficulty. Selected Duets for Clarinet Vol. 2 Voxman These duets are more advanced than Vol. 1 and have a series of great duets including Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. 6 Section 5: Advanced Clarinet Music There are many great books that could go here. Here are just a few that I like: 40 Studies for Clarinet and 32 Studies for Clarinet Rose There are many good editions of the Rose studies for clarinet, which are all adapted from other etudes. These are considered standard repertoire for clarinetists. I particularly like the slower etudes in the 32 Studies, but there is value to be found in all of the books. Some editions have CD performances or piano accompaniment, which are worth looking at. Advanced Studies for Clarinet Polatschek These advanced solo clarinet studies feature some great original etudes, but also many that are inspired by famous orchestral works. Artie Shaw s Jazz Technic Bk Etudes clarinet-etudes-sheet-music/ ?aff_id= These fun etudes by a jazz clarinet master are very challenging, but a great way to see in print some of his famous jazz stylings. 18 Etudes - Paul Jeanjean Paul Jeanjean has written many great clarinet resources in the form of workbooks, solos and etudes. I find this collection, although challenging, to be very melodic and fun. 30 Caprices for Clarinet - Cavallini These classic clarinet studies are flashy and feature clarinet virtuoso. There are some very expressive lines to compliment the fast fingers needed to play these. Very fun, and challenging.
