But sometimes long-term relationships can get stale. You get used to each other. You get in a routine. Last season, we shook a few things up with some new programming ideas, new times, and new experiences. You stood by us through all of those changes, and you told us you liked the fact we were trying to spice up the relationship. Join us this year and experience the seductive power of music. Let us show you our alluring side, our romantic side, our playful and our powerful side. We ll bring you great lovers (Don Juan), great heroes (Ein Heldenleben), great beauties who are great talents (Nicola Benedetti, Laura Ardan, Midori, Leila Josefowicz, and Kelley O Connor), powerful men who are also great talents (Thomas Sherwood, Charles Settle, and Emanuel Ax), and great love stories (Daphnis et Chloé, Siegfried Idyll, and Scheherazade), all leading to one of the greatest stories of love and betrayal, Samson et Dalila. We ve prepared a season full of spice, romance, intrigue, and love. We can t wait to share it all with you. JEREMY DENK LAURA ARDAN JAN 22/24 WAGNER: Siegfried Idyll MOZART: Piano Concerto No. 24 BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 4 Matthias Pintscher, conductor Inon Barnatan, piano arousing Pianist Inon Barnatan wowed the ASO audience in our season, and he s back this season to play Mozart s sweeping Piano Concerto No. 24. KELLEY O CONNOR INON BARNATAN MAR 5 Thu: 8pm* MAHLER: Rückert Lieder MAHLER: Symphony No. 5 Donald Runnicles, conductor Kelley O Connor, mezzo-soprano moody Mahler described his Fifth Symphony as this foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound. It takes a truly masterful conductor to tame this symphonic natural wonder, and our Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles is just the man for the job. He s known throughout the world for his mastery of Mahler s symphonies. Mezzo-soprano Kelley O Connor joins the Orchestra for Mahler s settings of Friedrich Rückert s achingly romantic poetry. *Saturday Subscribers attend Thursday, March 5 NMON FORD APR 23/25 CHRISTOPHER THEOFANIDIS: Creation Oratorio World Premiere Jessica Rivera, soprano Kelley O Connor, mezzo-soprano Thomas Cooley, tenor Nmon Ford, baritone ASO Chorus create What does it mean to bring something into existence? Why do we exist? What drives us to create art? These are questions that have been on the minds and hearts of people since time began, and on our minds as we celebrate our 70th Anniversary season this year. Christopher Theofanidis s original composition for soloists, chorus, and orchestra Creation Oratorio is an ambitious undertaking, and the culmination of a unique partnership between the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Emory University, and the Georgia Humanities Council. Interweaving texts and ideas from philosophy, science, religion, poetry, and literature, his Creation Oratorio will give us a profoundly deeper understanding of the relationship between these two subjects and to remove a limiting sense of a passive relationship between God and humanity. Christopher Theofanidis SERGEJ KRYLOV MAY 14/16 BERLIOZ: Roman Carnival Overture PAGANINI: Violin Concerto No. 5 BOCCHERINI/BERIO: Ritirata Notturna di Madrid MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 4, Italian Roberto Abbado, conductor Sergej Krylov, violin carnival Join the ASO for a true bella notte with Italian conductor Roberto Abbado, a frequent and favorite guest of the Orchestra, as he leads a symphonic journey through his home country. Berlioz and Mendelssohn both spent months in Italy, and their appreciation for the country is reflected in each of their very different compositions. Boccherini s Ritirata Notturna di Madrid might be about Spain, but it s distinctively Italian. Paganini was one of the most celebrated virtuosos of his time, and violinist Sergej Krylov joins the Orchestra to perform his Fifth Violin Concerto.

6 JONATHAN BISS JAVIER PERIANES OCT 2/4 BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 1 BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 9, Choral Donald Runnicles, conductor Jonathan Biss, piano Angela Meade, soprano Jamie Barton, mezzo-soprano Russell Thomas, tenor ASO Chorus choral Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles leads a powerhouse team of soloists in one of Beethoven s greatest masterpieces the famous Ninth Symphony and Jonathan Biss plays the great composer s First Piano Concerto. Commonly known as The Choral, the Ninth was one of the first symphonies to use a chorus. Written when Beethoven was completely deaf, he never heard it performed in its entirety, and at the premiere received five standing ovations. You won t want to miss a single moment of Part 1 of our mini Beethoven Fest. CAMERON CARPENTER NOV 6/8 BEETHOVEN: Leonore Overture No. 2 GRIEG: Piano Concerto BRAHMS: Symphony No. 1 Marc Piollet, conductor Javier Perianes, piano debuts This week, conductor Marc Piollet makes his ASO debut on the podium in Symphony Hall with Beethoven s Leonore Overture No. 2, a dark and dramatic introduction to the composer s only opera, and Brahms s First Symphony, written over 14 years by the notorious perfectionist composer. In addition, one of Spain s most exciting young artists, Javier Perianes, makes his ASO debut playing Grieg s Piano Concerto ASO.ORG classical SERIES JAN 29/31 Thu: 8pm /Sat: 7:30pm MESSIAEN: L Ascension POULENC: Organ Concerto SAINT-SAËNS: Symphony No. 3, Organ Jun Märkl, conductor Cameron Carpenter, organ pipeless You ve never heard (or seen) anything like this on the Atlanta Symphony Hall stage! Organist Cameron Carpenter, a dashing, über-talented young organist, brings a new vibrancy to the organ by designing and building a portable digital instrument that replicates the sounds of a grand pipe organ. Jun Märkl conducts the Orchestra and Mr. Carpenter in a night of great works from French organ composers: Messiaen s L Ascencion, Poulenc s Organ Concerto, and Saint- Saëns s Third Symphony. FEB 19/21 MENDELSSOHN: Overture to A Midsummer Night s Dream SCHUMANN: Violin Concerto WAGNER: Prelude and Good Friday Spell from Parsifal WAGNER: Prelude to Act One of Die Meistersinger Midori, violin dreamy Midori is one of today s greatest violinists, and she s never shied away from challenging and unusual pieces like Schumann s Violin Concerto. One of his most moving works, it was written in a burst of creativity shortly before he succumbed to mental illness. The evening s program continues with the light-hearted Overture from A Midsummer Night s Dream, plus Wagner s Prelude and Good Friday Spell from Parsifal and the Prelude to Act One of Die Meistersinger. MIDORI LYNN HARRELL MAR 26/27 Thu/Fri: 8pm* DVOŘÁK: Cello Concerto TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 4 Lynn Harrell, cello schooled Music sometimes expresses feelings better than words. Dvor ák s Cello Concerto captures all of the grandeur of a big symphonic concerto and conveys the composer s grief at the loss of his sister-in-law, Josefina, with whom he was deeply in love (in spite of being married to her sister). Tchaikovsky once wrote, an artist lives a double life: an everyday human life and an artistic life, and the two do not always go hand in hand. His Fourth Symphony is a clear expression of that struggle to find his artistic voice as well as his growth as a composer. *Saturday Subscribers attend Friday, March 27 JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET

8 And she said to him, How can you say, I love you, when your heart is not with me? JUDGES 16:15 OCT 16/18 DEBUSSY: Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun AVNER DORMAN: Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! DEBUSSY: La mer RAVEL: Bolero Thomas Sherwood, percussion Charles Settle, percussion intoxicating Journey to exotic lands and taste the sensual side of life with four pieces that will make all five senses sing. Debussy s ode to a daydreaming faun and his desire for nymphs will set the scene. Then, Israeli composer Avner Dorman s masterful work for two percussionists, Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!, features our own Principal Percussionist Thomas Sherwood and percussionist Charles Settle, and tells of three substances that are alluring but dangerous. Too much spice makes one ill; perfumes are seductive but can betray; toxins send one to the height of ecstasy but are all too often deadly. Debussy takes us to the sea, bringing the rolling ocean to life with La mer. And Ravel s Bolero has been causing riots since its premiere, with its seductive and suggestive melodic lines and pulsing rhythms.
