ON THE TAMIAMI TRAIL James Curnow The Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Subsequently a Latin influence is introduced along with an expressive middle theme before returning to the energetic flavour of the opening strains. A dynamic and varied overture for winds $ ARIKARA James Meredith Inspired by the Arikara (uh-rik-a-rah) tribe of Native Americans based in North Dakota, this work by James Meredith is an evocative piece without portraying any specific event or story. Opening with a plaintive flute solo supported by an exotic percussion backdrop, the piece features a chorale-like statement in the winds before moving to the faster and more rhythmic main section. Mixing early American imagery with striking dissonances, this is an effective and unique offering with limited technical demands $ Letter from Sado is an exciting new piece for young band based on a Japanese haiku of the same name. Sado refers to Sado Island in Japan in which various artists, religious and military leaders were sent in exile many years ago. The island has historically had a strong community of taiko drummers and as such, the piece incorporates optional homemade taiko drums. Blackshaw writes: To capture the idea of interpretation and the concept of reading between the lines, the students are invited to become decision makers about particular sections in the music. For example, the opening and closing sections of the piece use the same material, which is a selection of repeated melodic figures. The students themselves decide how to play these figures as individuals, in small teams and then as a whole band. Their decisions include ideas regarding tempo (how fast?), dynamics (how loud?), and articulation (smooth, short, or hard?). To inspire them, we use the haiku poem; i.e., the opening section invites the students to play the material as if it were a stormy, wild sea and the closing section invites the students to play the same melodic figures but this time, draw their inspiration from Heaven s River, or as we know it, the Milky Way. In-between, there is an elaborate, heavily textured section that becomes increasingly powerful. The music doesn t rest harmonically until the whole band plays in unison. These multiple layers of sound represent the many thoughts and ideas that would have surrounded those individuals sent to Sado Island in exile, the final unison is representative of their own breakthrough experience sending them on a pathway to inner peace and acceptance. Embrace your players creativity, offer them your trust, and see how far Letter from Sado can take your band! $ FANFARE FOR A NEW HORIZON Thomas Doss This fanfare stands for progress and the discovery of new horizons. But it also represents an expanding awarenesss while nurturing traditional values $ FJH CONCERT BAND 121. The exultancy in the music represents overwhelming joy and the promise of new and rewarding adventures. B1633 $ RUNAWAY CIRCUS TRAIN Erik Morales This highly programmatic work begins with an original waltz that sets a circus atmosphere. Soon after, the circus has packed up and the train begins to move to its next destination but trouble looms in the distance and chaos ensues. Using two familiar melodies (Camptown Races and Over the Waves), this colourful work uses a myriad of clever effects as it juxtaposes circus music with impending disaster. Unbelievably creative! B1648 $ THE SPIRIT OF ALOHA Brian Balmages Inspired by a trip to Honolulu, this music embodies the aloha spirit that so many discover when visiting the islands of Hawaii. Making use of a wealth of authentic percussion instruments (along with many options for substitutions), the piece truly captures the bright spirit of Hawaii. An optional ukulele part is cued in other instruments, and the piece concludes with a powerful rendition of Hawaii Aloha, an anthem of great pride to those who live in Hawaii. Magical! B1620 $ THAT WHICH BINDS US Brian Balmages Centred around the various stages of grief, the music cleverly uses theme and variations to take the audience on a roller coaster of emotions.
