2 SCOTLAND S THREE LEADING ORCHESTRAS The Perth Concert Series returns in 2017/18 to Perth Concert Hall, bigger and better than ever! In addition to the six subscription concerts, we re delighted to have partnered with Perth Concert Hall to bring you even more great performances! We warmly welcome the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and look forward to entertaining families and friends at the popular Christmas Concert featuring The Snowman, at the Viennese Gala, and an afternoon concert of music from Star Wars. The Perth Concert Series is unique it is the only platform dedicated to showcasing Scotland s three leading orchestras; the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. We re thrilled to present six wonderful subscription concerts for you. This season all three orchestras celebrate the music of Beethoven. The BBC SSO opens the Series with Beethoven s magnificent Choral Symphony under the baton of Chief Conductor Thomas Dausgaard; world-renowned violinist James Ehnes joins the RSNO to perform the Violin Concerto and the SCO explores both the Fifth and Eighth Symphonies with SCO Principal Guest Conductor Emmanuel Krivine and SCO Conductor Emeritus Joseph Swensen respectively. Plus, don t miss sparkling performances from pianists Christian Blackshaw (Mozart Piano Concerto No.25), Robert Levin (Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3) and David Kadouch (Chopin Piano Concerto No.2); the world premiere of Sir James MacMillan s brand new Saxophone Concerto co-commissioned by Perth Concert Hall; as well as powerful performances of Bruckner s Eighth, Sibelius Second and Dvořák s Fourth Symphonies. It ll make a thrilling climax to a concert filled with incredible moments; from the grandeur of Beethoven s Violin Concerto, played by the incomparable James Ehnes, to John Adams uproarious Foxtrot for Orchestra as Chairman Mao, a swing band and 80s minimalism collide under the Californian sun. SCO Principal Guest Conductor Emmanuel Krivine kicks off the concert with a tenacious battle for good in the overture to Weber s supernatural opera about a hunter s pact with the devil, before entering combat with Beethoven s Fifth. 11 THURSDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2018, 7:30PM ROYAL SCOTTISH NATIONAL ORCHESTRA Mozart Bruckner Peter Oundjian Christian Blackshaw Piano Concerto No.25, K.503 Symphony No.8 Conductor Piano They call Bruckner s symphonies cathedrals in sound, and it s true Bruckner s Eighth Symphony contains some of the grandest and most beautiful sounds ever assembled, by a composer with a vision of another world. But hearing is believing, and anyone can be moved by this vast yet deeply touching masterpiece. RSNO Music Director Peter Oundjian loves it, and he s paired it with something very different but equally beautiful Mozart s jubilant Piano Concerto No.25. The perfect musical palate-cleanser! 13 WEDNESDAY 11 APRIL 2018, 7:30PM SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Sibelius MacMillan Glazunov Beethoven Joseph Swensen Amy Dickson Pelléas et Mélisande Saxophone Concerto World Premiere Co-commissioned by Perth Concert Hall, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Aurora Orchestra Saxophone Concerto Symphony No.8 Conductor Saxophone Amy Dickson wears her phenomenal virtuosity lightly, as though playing the saxophone were as natural as breathing. She has made Glazunov s captivating concerto her own, and pairs it with a very special event: a new concerto from Sir James MacMillan. His are some of the very best concertos of recent years not least the phenomenally successful SCO commission Veni, Veni, Emmanuel so each new one is an enticing prospect. Joseph Swensen opens and closes the evening with two great titans of his own musical world: Sibelius and Beethoven. 15 FRIDAY 27 APRIL 2018, 7:30PM BBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Smetana Chopin Dvořák Matthias Pintscher David Kadouch Vltava and Šárka from Má Vlast Piano Concerto No.2 Symphony No.4 Conductor Piano Matthias Pintscher, the BBC SSO s Artist-In-Association, brings a composer s sense of adventure to a concert that begins with Smetana s eventful journey down the River Vltava and ends amidst the jubilant trumpets of Dvořák s stirring symphony. In between comes a glimpse of a teenage composer in love, as the award-winning young French virtuoso David Kadouch spins purest gold from the hearts and flowers of Chopin s Second Piano Concerto. 18 INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION You might only know the Scottish Orchestras for their concerts on the stage, but off the platform all three orchestras are committed to engaging with young people in your local area. Whether it s concerts and workshops for primary and secondary school pupils, side-by-side performances with Perth Youth Orchestra or the Community Orchestra run in partnership with Horsecross Arts, the Scottish Orchestras are keen to encourage more young people in Perthshire to engage with music; to help them grow in self-esteem, social confidence and musical ability. Masterworks In September 2017, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra brings Masterworks to Perthshire, encouraging upper secondary school music students to hone their listening, performing, composing and improvising skills through experiential workshops led by members of the SCO. The project culminates in a guided performance of John Adams The Chairman Dances, a movement from Shaker Loops, as well as Steve Reich s Clapping Music in concert at Perth Concert Hall. A limited number of public tickets for the performance are available from Ten Pieces In February 2018 the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra will introduce hundreds of Perthshire schoolchildren to the sounds of the orchestra at a BBC Ten Pieces concert. Ten Pieces is the BBC s UK-wide initiative to inspire children to develop their own creative responses to ten specially-chosen pieces of music, which include Beethoven s Fifth Symphony and Stravinsky s The Firebird. Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Concerto Concert On Sunday 24 June 2018 the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be the supporting orchestra in a concert showcasing the talent of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This public performance is open to all and is an exciting and inspiring opportunity to see the musicians of tomorrow at the start of their career. Tickets are available from
