Mr. Dunning also directs the Marching Band, coordinates Jazz Combos, and assists with the Vintage show choir backup band. Mr. Dunning received his Bachelors degree in Music Education at the University of Southern Mississippi under the direction of Dr. Marta Hofacre, Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, and Mr. Raoul Jerome. He received his Masters Degree in Music Education with a Jazz Emphasis from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. Mr. Dunning performs often as a member of the Big Band Reunion, Bay City Swing, and Swing Shift Big Bands, and the Wisconsin Symphonic Winds. Green Bay native Alex Noppe has had a diverse performing and teaching career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and jazz/commercial artist. Currently, he is the trumpet professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Mead Witter School of Music and plays with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet. Alex is a founding member and the resident composer/arranger for the Mirari Brass Quintet, which for eight years has performed in concert halls, universities, schools, and churches in over 35 states and abroad. He has performed with numerous other ensembles across the country, including the Charlotte Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Lansing Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony, Hal Leonard Jazz Orchestra and many others. He has played for five years with the Louis Romanos Quartet, which fuses New Orleans jazz with Latin and world music in a variety of rhythmic patterns. Prior to his appointment at UW-Madison, Alex held teaching positions at Boise State University and the University of Louisiana-Monroe. In addition to numerous compositions and arrangements written for the Mirari Brass, he has had works premiered by the Arbor Brass Choir, University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble, and Black Bayou Brass. Recording credits include Smack Dab in the Middle from John Clayton and the Hal Leonard Jazz Orchestra, Celestial

6 Dancers by the Philharmonia a Vent, and William Bolcom: Songs of Innocence and Experience featuring Leonard Slatkin and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra, which was awarded three Grammy awards in Alex can be heard on numerous recordings from the Hal Leonard Music Company and FJH Music, and is featured on critically acclaimed releases from the Mirari Brass Quintet and the Wave Mechanics Union, as well as the multiple recent albums from the Louis Romanos Quartet. Alex is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist and plays on Bach trumpets. Dr. Johannes Wallmann is an Associate Professor of Music at UW-Madison s Mead Witter School of Music and the inaugural holder of the John and Carolyn Peterson Chair in Jazz Studies. Born in Germany, Wallmann was raised on Canada s Vancouver Island and studied jazz piano and composition at Berklee College of Music (B.Mus., 1995) and at New York University (M.A., 1997; Ph.D., 2010). He has won numerous national music competitions and scholarships, including two Canada Council artist grants. Wallmann served as Director of Jazz Studies at California State University East Bay from 2007 to 2012, where he taught jazz piano, composition, theory, and ensembles, and developed the music department s jazz concentration. Previously, Wallmann taught on the music faculties of New York University and at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Wallmann has recorded six critically acclaimed CDs as a leader, including The Johannes Wallmann Quartet (1997), Alphabeticity (2003), Minor Prophets(2007), The Coasts (2010) and Always Something (2015). His 2015 quintet album, The Town Musicians (Fresh Sound New Talent FSNT-469), was named an Editors pick from DownBeat Magazine, which called it a stunning collage of jazz styles and genres and a harmonious album from a lifetime of diverse sounds and experiences. Midwest Record calls The Town Musicians a sizzling session of sitting down jazz and music that meets on the corner of complex and accessible, and the UK s Jazz Journal wrote, If I were responsible for an album as good as this, I d be shouting about it. His new album, Love Wins, will be released in March 2018 on Fresh Sounds New Talent (Barcelona).

7 NEENAH HIGH SCHOOL has a very long and rich instrumental jazz tradition consisting of several performing ensembles. Each gives students the opportunity to explore the many facets of this original American art form and experience diverse levels of performance. Each year the students perform for many different people and in many different settings from private engagements, to district and state music festivals, to public community events such as the Fox Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend. The UW JAZZ ORCHESTRA is celebrating its 50th ANNIVERSARY SEASON. The ensemble was established as the Mead Witter School of Music s first jazz and popular music ensemble in 1968 by trombone professor Allen Chase. Its directors have included bassist Richard Davis, saxophonist Les Thimmig, trombonist Claude Cailliet, and trumpeter Jim Doherty. The Orchestra, now under the direction of UW Madison Director of Jazz Studies Johannes Wallmann, workshops and performs music ranging from the classic big band repertoire to contemporary and cutting-edge concert jazz music by today s leading jazz composers. UW Madison: The School of Music offers undergraduate Bachelor of Music in Performance - Jazz Studies and the Bachelor of Arts in Music - Jazz Studies degrees, as well as a doctoral (D.M.A.) minor in jazz studies. Jazz ensembles and courses in jazz improvisation, theory, composition and arranging, and history are also available to other music majors and non-majors. Each year, the jazz ensembles perform with a variety of guest artists. Interested students should visit music.wisc.edu/jazz for information on application dates and procedures.
