3 5 Dear Customers and Visitors of the Oper Leipzig, PROF. ULF SCHIRMER Intendant and General Music Director WE WISH YOU AN EXCITING SEASON AT THE OPER LEIPZIG! As the Oper Leipzig celebrates its anniversary in 2018, two themes frame its 325 years of existence: tradition and innovation. And as in years past, we are working to demonstrate that the two aren t mutually exclusive. To our great delight, the Oper Leipzig made up of the opera, the Leipzig Ballet, and the Musikalische Komödie continues to see growing public interest, especially at the national and international level. For many opera fans, the Ring cycles provide an opportunity to discover the city of Leipzig. Although the house competes at a national and even international level, it has meanwhile remained true to its core hometown audience. With this in mind, I am especially pleased to present the many-faceted 2018/19 season. A world-class orchestra like the Gewandhaus Orchestra makes programming Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner as cornerstones of our season an obvious choice. For Strauss fans, we ve put together the composer s best-known works in themed weekends. With the new production of Der fliegender Holländer, we re one step closer to realizing our goal of having all of this Leipzig native s works in our repertoire. For Italian opera buffs, we ve got a choice selection of Verdi and Puccini s finest pieces. In addition, we ll open a new production of Carmen in December, But that s not all: on the eve of the Beethoven anniversary year, the Leipzig Ballet will dedicate an entire evening to him. And the Musikalische Komödie has prepared a season that runs the gamut from musical to operetta and back again, with titles such as The Duchess of Chicago, On the Town, The Firework, and Madame Pompadour. 4 P A S S I O N A T E. S E N S U A L. G R A N D. O P E R A Following on the heels of Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot, the Oper Leipzig is pleased to present Giacomo Puccini s lesser-known masterpiece La fanciulla del West/The Girl of the Golden West. Written to fulfill a commission from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Puccini set the opera s action in a gold mining camp. As in his other operas, Puccini s title figure is a woman who is worshipped as an angel by the men around her. The search for an angel of salvation grips the Flying Dutchman, too. Last seen in Leipzig a decade ago, Der fliegende Holländer appears in a new production by Dutch stage director and set designer Michiel Dijkema. His unexpected ideas and productions have won him a place in the hearts of his Leipzig audience. The Holländer s archetypical foil is Carmen, the pure incarnation of the femme fatale. Australian director Lindy Hume brings this unapologetically freedomloving, self-confident woman to the stage. Smetana s comic opera The Bartered Bride is proof that close provincial quarters aren t always bad as long as you know how to handle them. And they may even teach you something about what it means to be human. Marius Felix Lange s Snow White might have been written as an opera for children, but audiences of all ages will enjoy this comic fairytale come to life. OPERA / RUSALKA 7 Augustusplatz Leipzig

L E I P Z I G B A L L E T An evening of Beethoven, presented by the Leipzig Ballet, with music played live by one of the best orchestras in the world: it doesn t get much better than this. With an eye towards the upcoming Beet hoven anniversary year, the Leipzig Ballet presents this evening featuring choreography by Uwe Scholz, Mario Schröder, and Stanton Welch as the official opening ceremony for the festivities cele brating 25 years of sister-cityhood between Leipzig and Houston. The city of Leipzig as a city of music has long been a programmatic focal point of the Leipzig Ballet and its cooperation with the Chorus of the Oper Leipzig. After choreographing Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy s symphonic cantata Lobgesang and Johann Sebastian Bach s St. John Passion, ballet director and principal choreo grapher Mario Schröder turns his gaze to Bach s Magnificat. In addition, the Leipzig Ballet has numerous cooperative efforts throughout its season. A special highlight is the presentation of If you were God at the Schauspiel Leipzig (Leipzig s playhouse). And as in previous years, the Leipzig Ballet will cooperate with lofft to present Intershop, featuring work from the Company s talented young dancer /choreographers. This year, their work will be presented at the Baumwollspinnerei. The Leipzig Ballet rounds out their season with a gala held in honor of former ballet director Uwe Scholz, who would have turned 60 this December. M U S I K A L I S C H E K O M Ö D I E This season, the SS MuKo will steam from the bustling metropolises of Chicago and New York City to the relatively calm waters of a German village. Aboard are rich American ladies, love-hungry sailors, stuffy manufacturing tycoons, and circus directors in disguise. And the onboard entertainment is even more promising: Emmerich Kálmán, Leonard Bernstein, and Paul Burkhard to name just a few give us the finest music from both Vienna and Charleston, encompassing sumptuous operetta melodies, wild jazz sounds, popular hits, and nostalgic evergreens. Jazz? Or a waltz? The season begins with this question of musical taste, as Kálmán s The Duchess of Chicago takes the stage. On its heels are Leonard Bernstein s musical On the Town (directed by principal director Cusch Jung), Paul Burkhard s The Firework (directed by Axel Köhler), and Madame Pompadour, three pieces designed to please any musical palate. In addition, the Musikalische Komödie will once again dedicate itself to a musical excavation: Erich Wolfgang Korngold s Rosen aus Florida, based on sketches by Leo Fall. Regarded as the first national Czech opera, it looks past the nation-at-large to focus instead on the microcosm of life in a village in that operates according to its own laws, but in which humanity always triumphs. 12 2 3 L E I P Z I G E R O P E R N B A L L» AHOI Č ESKO«When the doors of the Opera House open on October 13, 2018 accompanied by cries of Ahoj Cˇesko! it can only mean one thing: this year s Opera Ball is dedicated to the Czech Republic. And for good reason! 2018 marks a number of special anniversaries for this neighboring country. It s been 25 years since the former Czechoslovakia was divided into two independent countries, 50 years since the invasion of the Warsaw Pact countries, and 100 years since the founding of the first Czech Republic. And not least of all, it is the 45th anniversary of the sister-cityhood between Leipzig and Brno (called Brünn in German). For the sixth time, Porsche AG presents Leipzig s biggest, most important social event of the year. More than 2,000 guests from the worlds of politics, business, culture, and sports will attend. The evening will be kicked off by Leipzig s world- famous Gewandhaus Orchestra and members of the Oper Leipzig s soloist ensemble, as they open the Opera Ball s musical program and the first round of waltzes. While the crowd moves in three-four time and a star guest thrills the audience in the main hall, the five additional stages in the rest of the Opera House will feature a wide variety of musical styles. One of the world s premiere orchestral ensembles, the Gewandhaus is set to celebrate its 275th anniversary in 2018, creating a tradition of musical continuity at the highest levels that stretches back to Run by the city of Leipzig since 1840, the Gewandhaus Orchestra has three equally important venues: the St. Thomas Church, the Gewandhaus, and the Opera House. Conductors such as Heinrich Marschner, Albert Lortzing, Gustav Mahler, and Arthur Nikisch, among others, have led operatic performances. Works such as Heinrich Marschner s Vampyr (March 29, 1828), Lortzing s Zar und Zimmermann (December 22, 1837), and Der Wildschütz (December 31, 1842), Schumann s only opera Genoveva (June ), and Kurt Weill s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (March 9, 1930) were premiered by the Gewandhaus at the Oper Leipzig. It was also here, in 1878, that Richard Wagner s Ring was performed for the first time outside the Bayreuther Festspielhaus. Ulf Schirmer has been General Musical Director of the Oper Leipzig since the 2009/10 season. With his designation as Intendant, the cooperation between the two great cultural institutions on the Augustusplatz has reached a new level of artistic cooperation. The many Strauss and Wagner works added to the repertoire exemplify the collaboration s most recent artistic triumphs. Since its founding, the Gewandhaus Orchestra has had 20 musical directors, including Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Franz Konwitschny, Václav Neumann, Kurt Masur, Herbert Blomstedt, and Riccardo Chailly. Andriss Nelsons takes up the position of Gewandhauskapellmeister with the 2017/18 season.
