2 Visiting Artists Program The Kennedy Center s Visiting Artists Program is designed to increase and highlight the arts in education by bringing the very best artists performing at the Kennedy Center directly into area schools. For students ranging from elementary to senior high, the Visiting Artists Program provides an extensive range of national and international dancers, musicians, and actors for lecture/demonstrations, master classes, mini-performances, and unique hands-on workshops. All program offerings are FREE to your school. How do I apply? Coordinators and teachers interested in hosting an artist must complete an application form, select the artists and presentations most appropriate for your school, and send the application form to the Kennedy Center (mailing address on page 8). Though there is no application deadline, presentations are limited and fill up quickly. Applications, if not enclosed, can be downloaded online at Who Can Apply? Any school within a one-hour driving distance from the Kennedy Center is eligible for consideration. The schools selected are expected to meet specific site requirements. Though most site requirements can be met with little or no cost to the school, we do require a coordinator at the school to oversee the preparation, logistics, and presentation. 3 dance Masterpieces of African American Choreography Modern Dance April The Kennedy Center presents an unprecedented exploration of the contribution of African-American choreographers to the world of dance during its week-long series of performances featuring dance legends Judith Jamison and Carmen DeLavallade introducing over 13 dance companies representing the full range of African-American dance in this country. In addition to performing, several artists and companies have been selected to present master classes, performance/demonstrations, and workshops at area schools. Koffi Koko, internationally recognized dancer, choreographer, and performance artist from Benin, creates works that combine African and Western dance forms. As one of the main representatives of the evolution of African dance, Koffi Koko introduces dance students to contemporary dance movements that merge traditional polyrhythms with free-flowing Western movement. April 18 Dance Class Ronald K. Brown, one of the most quietly profound choreographers of his modern-dance generation (New w York Times), creates works that are a fusion of influences from the U.S.,., the Caribbean and West Africa. In these sessions, Ron Brown and company members introduce dance students to the unique style and technique of the company. April 25 Dance Class Urban Bush Women, a Brooklyn-based performance ensemble that has toured world-wide, produces bold and life affirming works based on women s experiences, African-American history, and cultural influences of the African Diaspora. In this performance/demonstration, Urban Bush Women explores the use of contemporary dance, music, and text as a catalyst for social change. 4 variety music dance music Winard Harper Sextet October 1 A virtuoso on the cymbals and African drums, Winard Harper and his remarkable sextet introduce students to the world of jazz through performance, demonstration, and discussion. Performance and Demonstration Grades 5-9 Antonio Hart, saxophone October 15 This Grammy-nominated saxophonist began playing as a classical musician before he moved into jazz. In addition to touring worldwide with his band, Mr. Hart is also professor at Queens College in the Masters program in. In this session, Mr. Hart presents a clinic for high school jazz musicians. Clinic 60- Jose Franch-Ballester, clarinet November 3-5 In addition to winning the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Spanish-born clarinetist Jose Franch-Ballester received five additional YCA prizes. Mr Franch-Ballester, who has performed as a recitalist and a soloist with orchestras in the United States and Europe, presents a performance with commentary followed by a discussion with students. Grades 7-12 Eugenia Leon, vocals Music of Mexico November 4 Eugenia Leon, considered by many to be Mexico s finest singer, takes students on a voyage through the music of Mexico. Through Mexican song literature ranging from folk, to traditional, to contemporary, Ms. Leon performs music written for children, talks about the meaning and roots of the music, and engages students through listening and participating in these treasured Mexican songs. Performance/Workshop Presented in Spanish (English interpreter provided) Grades 5-8 Anton Belov, baritone November 16 Russian-born American baritone Anton Belov won First Prize in the 2002 Young Concert Artists International Auditions as well as several other coveted awards. Mr. Belov presents a performance with commentary followed by a discussion with students.

5 Bill Henderson and Trio, vocals November 18 Lauded as a sensational veteran jazz singer (New Yorker), Bill Henderson delivers exquisite vocal phrasing, humor, and heart with his deep baritone and Blues-influenced voice. In this demonstration n and discussion session, Mr. Henderson talks about vocal interpretation, performance techniques, and his 50+ years of having both an acting and a singing career. Demonstration/Discussion Broadway: Thoroughly Modern Millie Musical Theater December 8 The creators of the Tony Award-winning musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, share their insights into performing in musicals and critique selected musical theater students in this master class session. Songwriting-duo Jeanine Tesori (music) and Dick Scanlan (book and lyrics) offer a rare opportunity for students to work on a song with a composer and lyricist. Master Class/Discussion Grades 11-University Stefon Harris, vibraphone December 10 Grammy-nominated and classically trained Stefon Harris is a vibraphonist, composer, and bandleader. Widely recognized by both his peers and jazz critics, he has established himself as the most important and creative vibraphonist of his generation. In these clinic/workshop sessions, Mr. Harris works with students on developing and heightening awareness of others within the band, improvisation, and various rhythmic techniques. Clinics/Workshops Nicolas Kendall, violin December American violinist Nicolas Kendall was a First Prize winner in the 2002 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and a 1995 winner of the National Symphony Orchestra s Young Soloist Competition. Mr. Kendall presents a performance with commentary followed by a discussion and demonstration of violin technique. Grades minutes Sean Grissom, cello Classical to Contemporary Music December Classically trained at the Juilliard School of Music, Sean Grissom has made his name as a cellist who expands the role of the cello to include fiddling, bluegrass, Cajun, swing, and jazz. Armed with his electric cello and inimitable upbeat and humorous style, Mr. Grissom works with students to explore What Is Music? through discussion of sound, how to organize sounds into patterns, and how to compose a piece. Connections to other subject areas are included. Workshop/Demonstration Grades 3-5 Four class periods dance music variety

6 variety music dance Jimmy Heath, saxophone January 7 Designated as a National Endowment for the Arts Master, Jimmy Heath is legendary for his composing and arranging skills and gifted performing on the tenor saxophone and flute. Having collaborated with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 60 years, he shares his wealth of experience and skills as a teacher in this clinic session with jazz students. Clinic David Sanchez, saxophone January 26 Grammy-nominated saxophonist David Sanchez has performed with such artists as Paquito D Rivera, Hilton Ruiz, Eddie Palmieri, and jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. A world-renowned saxophonist and composer, Mr. Sanchez works with high school jazz musicians and shares his extensive knowledge and skill. Clinic 60- Alexandre Pirojenko, piano Chip Jackson, bass January 28 Bassist and Billy Taylor Trio member Chip Jackson has performed with many of the great jazz musicians of our times. Chip and his trio members demonstrate and perform selected pieces and then together coach a jazz ensemble in technique, style, and interpretation. Demonstration/Clinic 60- March 2-4 Russian pianist Alexandre Pirojenko, winner of the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and several other international piano competitions, has performed in many European countries, as well as in Japan and Peru and is a favorite performer in St. Petersburg, Russia. Mr. Pirojenko presents a performance with commentary followed by a discussion and demonstration. Grades 6-12 T.S. Monk, drums and vocals March 3 Multi-talented drummer, vocalist, and bandleader, T.S. Monk bridges a variety of styles from R&B and funk to hip-hop and traditional jazz. Dedicated to the Thelonious Monk Foundation and to the education of young musicians, T.S. Monk talks about his career and coaches a jazz ensemble. Clinic/Discussion 60 minutes We look forward to this program each year.

7 Chestnut Brass Company March This Grammy-winning brass quintet presents highlights of the development of brass instruments from the earliest trumpets to the present day. Students hear Renaissance music and music from the Civil War performed on instruments that were played at that time as well as a virtuosic display of more familiar favorites played on modern brass instruments. Grades 5-8 DaXun Zhang, double bass March 21 DaXun Zhang, winner of the 2003 Young Concert Artists Auditions, is the youngest artist ever to win the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. Born in Harbin, a city in northeast China, Mr. Zhang has performed as a recitalist and a soloist with several orchestras across the U.S. Mr. Zhang presents a performance with commentary followed by a demonstration and discussion. Andes Manta Music of the Andes April Andes Manta, professional musicians and natives of the Ecuadorian Andes, perform the vibrant, energetic music of the Andes region of South America in authentic form. These engaging musicians discuss the music and traditions of their culture and demonstrate the rich and haunting sounds of more than 35 instruments including the six-foot-long panpipes, llama toenail rattles, moxeno flutes, folk guitars, and a vast array of folk instruments. Performance/Demonstration Grades 4-7 Nnenna Freelon, vocals April A jazz vocalist, composer, songwriter, and educator, Nnenna Freelon is known throughout the Units States and Europe for her artistry and interpretive skills. Ms. Freelon is a five-time Grammy nominee as well as the recipient of the Billie Holiday Award, the Eubie Blake Award, and the California Partners in Education Award for Outstanding Service. In addition to producing several CDs and presenting concerts in the U.S. and Europe, Ms. Freelon is dedicated to teaching and conducting clinics in schools across the country. During these two days, Ms. Freelon is available to work with students with minimal music training to create and experience sounds in new and imaginative ways. Ms. Freelon is also available to work with high school jazz vocal students to develop skills in jazz interpretation, improvisation, and music theory and learn what it takes to become a professional jazz musician. Workshop/Clinics Grades 6-12 Sisters in May 18 The Sisters in Collegiate Sextet is featured annually as part of the Kennedy Center s Women in Festival. Members of the group are comprised of winners of the International Sisters in Collegiate Competition. This season s Sisters in group present a performance and discussion of jazz technique. dance music variety

8 variety music dance variety Tales & Scales Music/Storytelling October Tales and Scales is the nation s only musictelling ensemble. These four uniquely talented instrumental musicians present an interactive workshop that explores the relationship of story, creative movement, and music. At the end of the workshop, all elements are combined into a short performance by the students. Workshop Grades 3-6 Three minute workshops Hobey Ford, puppeteer Puppetry April 4-8 A recipient of puppetry s highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, Hobey Ford, puppeteer from North Carolina, has also received three Henson Foundation grants. His shadow puppetry work and teaching have taken him to places throughout North America teaching shadow puppetry construction and performance. Combining storytelling with shadow puppetry brings a variety of cultures to life in the classroom through folktales. During these workshops, students become familiar with folktales from many cultures, learn shadow puppetry performance techniques, and construct their own shadow puppets. Performance/Demonstration + 3 Workshops Grades 2-5 Four class periods Patricia and Fredrick McKissack, authors Literary Arts April Award-winning authors Patricia and Fredrick McKissack have received countless awards and much critical acclaim for the close to one hundred books they have written about the African-American experience. These celebrated authors talk about their personal experiences growing up, read selections from their books, and offer advice and suggestions on writing and telling one s own stories.
