The tip of this reed is the least delicate of all the reeds, therefore well suited for the beginner student. For those who have never played a reed instrument, we recommend purchasing a medium-soft reed. As the player's musical ability progresses and their embouchure strengthens, he/she may find that the reed has a tendency to collapse. That's when it's time to move on to a medium reed. Black: The next step up from a red reed. It has a heavy heart, like the red, but a more delicate tip. Purple/Green/Brown/Orange: More advanced players might want to play on these American Scrape reeds. They have a heavy heart, like the red and black, but lighter areas on each side called "windows." Since all three are made by different reed makers, we recommend that you try each of them to see which one best suits your needs. Blue/Multi Student: These reeds are made by professional oboists, meant for the advanced student who is not quite ready for the strength of a professional reed. Blue/Gray/White/Multi/Light Green/Gold/Purple: These are our professional reeds, each made by a different professional oboist. We recommend that you try each of them to see which one best suits your needs.
