Thanks to the passion of Duke Francesco II of Este for the violin, music became an essential part of life at Court, especially during State receptions, weddings, and official visits by foreign dignitaries. It was on these occasions that the Duke could demonstrate his magnificence. That was during the 17 th century. However, music still occupies a prime position in Modena s cultural life. This is attested by the numerous festivals and concerts that take place in a city known worldwide as the capital of Italian bel canto. The Region of Emilia Romagna boasts many noted solo and ensemble musicians, professionals who have devoted their careers to the study of Baroque and Classical repertoire. Paradoxically, there is no Music Academy in this part of Emilia Romagna which offers advanced performance training in this repertoire. We are convinced that Modena is perfectly placed to become a pole of attraction for students from neighbouring areas like Bologna, Mantua and Verona. For all these reasons it would appear opportune to propose a specialist course in historically authentic performance practice in what are two of the richest periods in Italian music. A project of such distinction would greatly add to the prestige of the Vecchi-Tonelli, attracting music students from all over the world. This initiative would bring honour to the City and Court of Modena, which during the period in question provided European music with composers of renown. As testimony to its illustrious past, Modena still draws music scholars from all over the world to consult the collection of manuscripts in the Biblioteca Estense music archive. Course objectives This first level Master's Degree in Early Music Theory and Practice is designed to equip the professional musician for performing Baroque and Classical period repertoire. The course comprises:

2 THEORY: The study of period music treatises; temperament theory; ornamentation and counterpoint. Exegesis of sources and theories. PRACTICE: Techniques used in playing period string and keyboard instruments; performance practice as it relates to ornamentation and basso continuo style. Course objectives The purpose of this course is to prepare singers and instrumentalists for solo, ensemble and orchestral careers in Baroque and Classical period music. The course will focus on technique, interpretation and intercultural aspects of the repertoire in question, and will comprise: lectures on period treatises; musical rhetoric; vocal and instrumental technique; basso continuo and ensemble performance practice. This advanced specialist course equips participants to perform music from the Baroque and Classical repertoire. It will prepare students in all aspects of historically authentic performance style. Course Design The course is designed to: Transmit a comprehensive performance culture in Baroque and Classical repertoire Broaden the player s awareness of technical and functional issues involved Deepen the player s knowledge of repertoire, both for solo and ensemble work Put theory into practice by means of performance workshops and public concerts. Professional Opportunities The skills and knowledge acquired will qualify students to work as: solo or ensemble specialists in Early Music qualified teachers of period performance practice Who can apply for the course? Students seeking to deepen their professional skills in playing Early Music by undertaking a specialist course in musical philology and historically authentic performance practice. Throughout the academic year students will be given the chance to broaden all aspects of their music making by means of concerts, workshops, seminars and Master Classes. Admission Requirements To gain admission to the Master's degree students are required to possess one of the following qualifications: First or Second Degree or Diploma awarded by a European Conservatoire or University of Music attesting that they are qualified to attend the course; Degree or Diploma from a non EU music school or University equivalent to a Bachelor of Music (the Course Admissions Committee will examine its validity prior to admission; First level Degree from an Italian or foreign University

3 Further Conditions of Entry: Applicants must not be enrolled in other Higher Music Education Programs. They must demonstrate a clear aptitude for the repertoire under study Admission is granted on the basis of an audition. Academic Diploma Levels I or II from a State Conservatorio (or I.S.S.M. ) or Diploma from the Conservatorio Vecchio Ordinamento (in this case a Second Level High School Diploma must also be included). Submission deadline: not later than 1 pm on 31 st August, 2017 Results will be published on the Institute s website ( within 7 working days from the date of the entry exam and audition. Auditions will be held September 14 th, 2017 All students applying for admission to the Master s Course must take two examinations one oral and one practical. Successful candidates to the audition will be notified by or phone-call. The audition is a performance 20 minutes in length max, structured as follows: Performance of one movement from a piece for solo instrument before 1750; Performance of a sonata from the 18 th century Italian or French repertoire; Performance of a piece (sonata or concerto) from the Classical Period before 1830; Performance of two arias and recitatives from the repertoire before 1750 and one aria and recitative after 1750 (for singers).

4 Auditions will be followed by an oral exam on the student s reasons for applying and on their knowledge of technique and analysis. Minimum number of students: 16. Course Duration - 14 September, 2017 admission tests; - the course commences in November 2017 and will end on 31 October, 2018; - lessons will take place in a series of monthly meetings (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays) devoted to lessons on theory and ensemble performance practice. Structure of the courses The Master will last 2 semesters, with a total of 1500 hours divided as follows: 230 hours lectures 60 hours orchestra 36 hour special seminars and master classes 250 hours work placement experience and musical performances Total Credits: 60. Compulsory Attendance: 85% for each class. Final Exam The final exam comprises a concert program lasting 60 minutes. Academic Qualification To earn the I Level Master's Degree in Early Music Theory and Practice students must obtain 60 CFA. Therefore, attendance must not be below 85% of the total amount of class hours for each course. Methods of Payment Annual tuition fees for the Master s Course: 1800 Euro First payment: 1000 Euro to be paid at enrolment and in all events no later than 31 October 2017
