2 Intruduction A unique course focusing on music of the 17th-18th centuries. While familiarizing with the culture and customs of the period and their impact on the development of music and musicians, students will spend nine days of studying, playing, singing, attending master classes, workshops and performing in concerts, in the pleasant atmosphere of the School of Arts campus, in the center of Tel Aviv. After the huge success of the 1st seminar last year, we chose to focus this year on English music by Henry Purcell and his contemporaries, as well as the mutual influences between the English, Italian and German music of the period. The number of participants in the seminar is limited and musicians will be accepted after auditions. The seminar is open to singers and players of the following instruments: piano, harpsichord, bowed instruments, wind instruments and plucked instruments. During the seminar the participants will become familiar with repertoire; learn improvisation, ornamentation, rhetoric and figured bass; and receive lessons for improving technique from a team of international artists, who will be available to them in classes and workshops. During the week the students and teachers will prepare two concerts that will be open to the public. The structure of the seminar Morning Lecture 09:30-11:00 Dr. Alon Schab, one of the promising young researchers in Israel, who specialized in Henry Purcell s music, will lecture about musical migration processes before the information super-highway. The morning lecture series will explore the study of early manuscripts, processes of musical influence and historical and cultural background, with an emphasis on the Italian music scene of 17th-century London. Style Workshops 11:10-12:40 Piano workshop and introduction to The harpsichord This year we are opening the seminar especially to piano students who would like to become familiar with the harpsichord and its repertoire. The workshop is suitable for players of early classical repertoire (Mozart and Haydn) and naturally for those who play Bach. This intensive workshop coached by Kenneth Weiss will focus on baroque phrasing and on contextual use of articulations. You will play baroque and early classical repertoire on both piano and harpsichord.

3 Telemann recorder and flute fantasies an analytical seminar Telemann s 12 flute fantasies are part of a complex high quality repertoire for recorder and flute players. Kees Boeke will explore the various questions relating to their understanding and performance. Figured bass for non-keyboard players A basic course in understanding the role of bass and harmony to help singers and players gain a better in-depth understanding of their parts. Miri Singer shall be teaching you what you can require of your figured bass accompanists to assist you in your performance and in enhancing your interpretation. Period composition Experimenting with composing variations and ground bass pieces in the style of the 17th century. Dr. Alon Schab, a musicologist and composer will work closely with you to recreate music in early settings. Introduction to viola da gamba An opportunity to try playing viola da gamba. Myrna Herzog shall be available to you and assist you on your first steps with the instrument. Special Sessions Introduction to the lute and historical plucked string instruments Bari Moscovitz will be demonstrating the wide range of the instruments and their repertoire. A repertoire workshop for cellists Orit Messer Jacobi shall be introducing to cello players the fascinating 17th century repertoire for cello. Chamber Music Ensembles 14:10-15:40; 15:50-17:20 Each student will be assigned to two different chamber music ensembles, and will work with different instructors throughout the seminar. The repertoire will focus on 17th century English music and on 18th century chamber music. Some of the ensembles will prepare movements from one of Purcell s great vocal pieces.

4 Master Classes 17:30-19:30 This year the individual master classes are open to all participants. Participants taking the full program (A) will receive two master classes each from an international teacher, and will also have the option, should they be interested, to receive instruction from one of the Israeli teachers of their choice. Partial program participants (C) will receive one master class each from an international teacher and one form the Israeli team. Special Event: 15 years after her previous visit to Israel, Jill Feldman, One of the leading teachers and singers in the global early music scene, will arrive for one day of master classes for singers on December 22nd. The master classes will be open to selected students only and will be paid for separately. There will be only 8 master classes, therefore we recommend to all the other students especially singers to take advantage of the opportunity to listen to these master classes. Special workshops On Sunday, December 25th: Dr. David Shemer will arrive and hold master classes for harpsichord players and singers. Ayala Sicron and Bari Moscovitz will give a workshop on 17th century English recitative, and Drora Bruck and Miri Singer will jointly teach a workshop for instrumental solo pieces with figured bass, for players of melodic instruments.

6 Payment procedures Payment will be divided into three equal parts: October 10th, November 10th and December 10th. Registration fees: 30 EU by check sent with the registration form. For students accepted to the seminar the registration fee will count as part of the total participation fee. students who do not pass the auditions, and will not be accepted, the registration fee will not be refunded. Cancellation with full refund (excepting the registration fee) will be possible until November 1st. There will be no refund on cancellations after that date. All registration forms and checks must arrive by both regular mail and by October 10th, If you cannot send , please fax Registration and auditions End of registration: October 10th, Auditions will take place on the second week of October (a notice will be sent to the participants). International students should send recordings with their registration form. Students who will be exempt from an audition for any reason will be notified immediately. The scholarship committee will convene at the end of October. Singers are requested to prepare the following repertoire: 1. One English piece and one Italian piece, one from the 17th century and one from the 18th century, at least one of them including a recitative. 2. One piece of your own selection which best reflects your vocal ability. Instrument players are requested to prepare one 17th century piece and one additional piece of their choice from a different period.
