ABOUT THE MUSICIANS TODD ROSENBERG PHOTOGRAPHY Michael Mulcahy conductor Michael Mulcahy began studying trombone with his father, Jack Mulcahy, and completed his studies with Baden McCarron of the SSO and Geoffrey Bailey at the Sydney Conservatorium. His orchestral career began in 1976 as principal trombone of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and he subsequently held principal positions with the Melbourne and Cologne Radio symphony orchestras. In 1989 Georg Solti appointed him to his current post with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; since the he has served three CSO music directors: Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Muti. He is also principal trombone with Music of the Baroque (Chicago), the Grand Teton Music Festival (where he also regularly conducts) and the Australian World Orchestra, and he has appeared as a concerto soloist with orchestras worldwide. He has been Director of the Chicago Symphony Brass since 2007, presenting annual concerts in Chicago and producing a best-seller recording, CSO Brass Live. His interest in conducting was sparked in 1987 when West German Radio invited him to direct a program of Arvo Pärt. Since then he has served as assistant conductor for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and he conducts regularly for the Music at the Millenium and Composer Perspectives Festivals at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Other conducting engagements have taken him to Japan and Denmark, and he regularly returns to Sydney to conduct the SSO Brass Ensemble, most recently in Michael Mulcahy is Professor of Music at Northwestern University and has held lecturing and artist-in-residence posts at the Canberra School of Music, Indiana University and Florida State University. He has also taught and conducted at Daniel Barenboim s East West Divan workshop and served as Music Director for the Australian Youth Orchestra s National Music Camp. In 2012, with Nick Byrne and Scott Kinmont, he released the album Full Circle, a collection of music by Australian composers. 4

KEITH SAUNDERS SSO Brass Ensemble Formed in 1997, the SSO Brass Ensemble comprises many of Australia s finest brass players, drawn from the brass section of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Varying in size from a quintet to a full brass section of 16, the ensemble has a repertoire that ranges from music of the Renaissance to contemporary composers, including specially commissioned works from Australian composers such as Matthew Hindson, Nigel Westlake and Ross Edwards. In addition to performances in Sydney, the Brass Ensemble tours regularly throughout New South Wales and appears most seasons in the SSO s subscription series. 6 ABOUT THE MUSIC BROUGHTON Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale One way to think of this piece is as a four-movement symphony in which each movement s title points to the spirit of its conception. You might not, for example find it very easy to march to Broughton s off-centre Marches, but you ll certainly recognise the martial flair of the rhythms. The opening movement, Fanfares, emerges from a six-note motif, played in unison at the beginning. Here, too, syncopations keep the ear off-balance. The yearning third movement evokes the world of the American folk hymn and its main theme is based on a pentatonic (five-note) scale. The Finale is fast and spirited, with the percussion coming into its own! About the composer Bruce Broughton writes in nearly every medium, from soundtracks and music for video games (his score for Heart of Darkness was the first orchestral score composed for a game) to concert hall works in all genres. But he s primarily known for his work in motion pictures and television, which has earned him Oscar and Grammy award nominations for scores such as Silverado and The Young Sherlock Holmes, and he holds the record as a ten-time Emmy winner. His concert works have been performed by ensembles such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Sinfonia of London, as well as leading chamber ensembles and soloists, and the United States Air Force Band in Washington DC. KATS-CHERNIN Mater, for brass and percussion In 1999 Elena Kats-Chernin was commissioned by The Song Company to write a piece for six voices for their concert based on the theme Mother and Child. Initially, she says, she thought of writing a lullaby but around the same time my middle son Alex got very sick and I decided to use the Latin text Stabat mater, about the loss of a child. He had just been diagnosed with schizophrenia and the shock was very fresh. In the Stabat mater, Mary mourns at the foot of the cross: At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to her Son to the last. Kats-Chernin chose to set the text with an intricate rhythmic pattern, the metre changing every few bars from a regular four beats to a seven-beat pattern. This version for brass ensemble with percussion was created for the Four Winds Festival in It begins with a conversation between the upper voices and 6

explores brassy depths when the instruments come together in unison, maintaining momentum until the final Amen. About the composer Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Elena Kats-Chernin studied music in Moscow, Sydney and Hanover. She has created works across nearly every genre, from rags to operas, works for robotic instruments and a full-scale choral symphony. Her music featured at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and her accolades include Sounds Australian, Green Room and Helpmann awards. Her Russian Rag was used as Max s theme in the 2009 claymation film Mary and Max by Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot, and was also the theme of Late Night Live on ABC Radio National for many years; in 2011 it was replaced by Eliza s Aria, from the suite from her ballet Wild Swans. In 2012 she was the subject of an episode of the documentary series Creative Minds. HINDSON Siegfried Interlude No.1 Siegfried Interlude No.1 was commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for performance at the launch of the 2000 season. It uses themes from Wagner s opera Siegfried (Acts I and II), rearranging them in different ways, at one point adopting an almost James Bond-esque manner. Hindson was inspired by the march that is often played as an interval theme at performances of Siegfried in Europe, but as the reviewer for The Globe and Mail observed when it was performed in London in 2007, this was something more fun-filled and swinging than you d ever heard at the Wagner festival in Bayreuth. About the composer Matthew Hindson is an extraordinarily diverse composer, incorporating classical and more experimental electronic influences with a unique mix of both subtlety and sudden exuberance. As well as being performed by all the major Australian orchestras, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic among many others, his music has been choreographed by companies such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet (two commissions), San Francisco Ballet, National Ballet of Japan and the Sydney Dance Company, which toured his ballet Ellipse internationally. He is the Chair of the Composition and Music Technology Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and from 2004 to 2010 he was the artistic director of the Aurora Festival, dedicated to the work of living composers. In 2006 he was made a member of the BRIDGET ELLIOT 7

Order of Australia (AM). He was the Chair of the Music Board of the Australia Council for the Arts ( ) and subsequently a board member ( ). KOEHNE Albany Harbour (The Voyage) This work for brass ensemble and percussion was composed for the ANZAC Day commemorations of 2009 and was premiered in Turkey on 25 April that year, at the ANZAC Commemorative Site, North Beach Gallipoli. It takes its inspiration for the port city of Albany in Western Australia, from which Australian and New Zealand troops set sail for Egypt. The three continuous movements represent the departure, the sense of adventure that so many of the young men initially felt at the prospect of travel, and a concluding morning prayer. About the composer For anyone who believes that the great tradition of classical music must re-connect with a sense of contemporary vitality, the music of Graeme Koehne attracts avid interest and attention. In his best works, Koehne achieves that elusive synthesis of sophisticated compositional technique, informed Memorial to the Desert Mounted Corps at Mt Clarence in Albany, WA SSO CHAMBER MUSIC COCKTAIL HOUR Three inspiring evenings at the Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House SAT 16 MAY SAT 6 JUNE SAT 18 JULY Lights shimmering on the harbour, a uniquely intimate space, inspiring music, and a delicious cocktail to enjoy all the elements for one hour of sheer bliss. 9 by a deep understanding of musical history, and a popular touch that invests his music with emotional eloquence, visceral appeal and aural pleasure. Through the advocacy of some of today s most exciting international musicians such as the conductors Vladimir Jurowski and Kristjan Järvi, Koehne s music is becoming a regular presence on the international stage. His compositions have long been among the most popular by any Australian composer, and find a regular presence in the established repertoire of Australian music. MELINDA PARENT PUCCINI Scenes from Turandot arranged by Geoffrey Boyd Nineteenth- and early 20th-century Europe had a taste for the exotic, which opera composers were delighted to indulge. Delibes and Bizet turned to the Indies with Lakmé and Pearl Fishers; Puccini looked to Japan in Madama Butterfly and to China with the story of the beautiful but cruel Princess Turandot who sets her many suitors a cruel test: if they can correctly answer her three riddles they win her hand in marriage and the throne of China; if they answer wrongly, they lose their heads. When a mysterious foreigner outwits the princess and solves her riddles, she is furious, and the stranger in turn sets a riddle: if Turandot can guess his name before dawn, he will renounce his claim on her. This provides the context for the most famous aria from the opera: while the city is searched throughout the night for anyone who knows his identity, the stranger exults in his coming victory over the stone-hearted princess in Nessun dorma (None shall sleep). About the composer Giacomo Puccini was the most significant Italian composer after Verdi and remains one of the most popular, with operas such as La bohème and individual numbers such as One fine day from Madama Butterfly and Nessun dorma from Turandot, his final opera. Puccini believed that opera should be a total theatrical experience, which led him into the style known as verismo, with plots that were closer to real life. The resulting romanticism and unmawkish sentimentality of his operas have led to their enduring appearance. But it is the lyricism of his music that stands out: Without melody, fresh and poignant, there can be no music, he once said. FRANK C BANGS 9

MORE MUSIC MORE FROM TODAY S COMPOSERS If you d like to hear today s Bruce Broughton piece again, together with some other exciting new American creations for large brass ensemble, look for Sound the Bells!, a recording from The Bay Brass (San Francisco), for whom Fanfares, Marches, Hymns and Finale was composed. HARMONIA MUNDI Elena Kats-Chernin s Mater was originally composed for voices, and when the Vienna Boys Choir visited Australia in 2012 they commissioned from her a new choral work using words by Dorothea Mackellar: Land of Sweeping Plains. It s included on the choir s tour album Jubilate Deo, with music ranging from Bach and Mozart to Andrew Lloyd Webber s Pie Jesu. ABC CLASSICS If you re a Tea & Symphony regular, you might recall the powerful and moving experience of hearing didjeridu virtuoso William Barton in Kalkadungu, which he composed in collaboration with Matthew Hindson. That performance with the SSO is now available on Kalkadungu: Music for Didjeridu and Orchestra, together with pieces by William and his mother Delmae, a singer, and two pieces by Peter Sculthorpe. ABC CLASSICS With Swoon in the air on ABC Classic FM at the moment, now might be the time to seek out the gorgeous recording by SSO Principal Oboe Diana Doherty, Souvenirs. It s a collection of oboe adagios that includes hits of the baroque period, the heartbreaking slow movement from Mozart s Gran Partita, Rachmaninoff s Vocalise, Maria from West Side Story, and three Australian pieces: Carl Vine s Love Me Sweet, Graeme Koehne s Way Out West and the Love Duet from Ross Edwards Oboe Concerto. ABC CLASSICS And if today s Scenes from Turandot have inspired you to hear more of Puccini, you can t go wrong with the budget-friendly 5-CD set Ultimate Puccini The Essential Masterpieces. It lives up to its name with a generous selection of highlights from La bohème, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Manon Lescaut and, of course, Turandot, including Nessun dorma.
