6 INTRODUCTION Josh Pyke: Live with the SSO For this project, ten Australian composers (mostly young or emerging) were invited to arrange a song or two or four for symphony orchestra bringing the colours and gestures of classical orchestral music to Josh Pyke s distinctive songs. Songs are born with a future as yet unwritten. Unformed, with a potential that must be coaxed and wrung from the ether. Like a sculpture we mould with a vision in mind, that often morphs into something that we never imagined. Sometimes they travel vast, sweeping distances and return to us with another voice and a new meaning. I love the idea that songs can inhabit many incarnations, and since I don t read or write music, I was in awe at the idea that these amazing composers might realise a new potential in these songs that I simply don t have the capacity to unlock for myself. Working on this project has therefore been an exercise in trust, and a process of letting go. I watched the songs leave me and blossom into things that are both intimately familiar and miraculously new. Performing them in collaboration with the amazing Sydney Symphony Orchestra is at once an honour, a daunting challenge and undoubtedly a highlight of my career. While these songs were born in me, the people involved in this project have nurtured, reimagined and imparted new meaning into them. These creations no longer belong to me, giving me, and perhaps you, the opportunity to discover them all over again. For that experience, I am extremely grateful, and so proud to present these songs as fully matured collaborative pieces. 7 ABOUT THE MUSIC Notes by Josh Pyke Memories and Dust arr. George Ellis This is the title track from my debut album, and it means a great deal to me. It was inspired by the sad passing of two friends who were much too young to go, and all the questions and yearning those events brought up. I was interested to hear how George might explore those sadder themes, through tempo and structural changes, whilst still tapping into the joyousness of a song which is essentially a celebration of life. Sew My Name arr. Andrew Aronowicz Also from my debut record, and a regular in my live set, I was excited to hear how Andy had captured the romance in his arrangement of the song, and was able to incorporate melodic motifs that I usually cover on guitar or through backing vocals. The Lighthouse Song arr. Ellis After extensively touring my first album, I calculated that in 2008 I had spent 78 per cent of nights that year away from home. During that period of being so physically absent, I was also trying to lay down foundations on the home front and be emotionally present. That juxtaposition was intense, and led to a song that contains both the happiness and sadness of the situation. George s arrangement highlights those battling emotions beautifully. Still Some Big Deal arr. Philip Jameson This is a song that has had several forms. Once released as a filmed solo version; once attempted for a previous album but left aside; revisited for a yet-to-be-released fifth album, and now also given an incredible new life in Phil s treatment. The Sons of Clovis II (Sydney version) is the most famous, and generally considered the best, painting by Évariste Vital Luminais ( ). It was exhibited at the Salon of 1880 in Paris, where it caused a sensation, and purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in (A study and Luminais second painting of the same subject are held in Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.) 8

8 I always love the song, but felt the versions I d tried to capture weren t quite the ones that fitted. Phil has captured the drama in the song, and though it took some searching, I think this song has finally found its feet. Goldmines arr. William Gardiner This song was partly inspired by the Australian bush and that sense of there being an otherness present in the landscape that you can t quite explain, can t see, can t touch, but can feel right there beside you. I think William has helped explore that idea in the arrangement that quiet drama that is never resolved. Parking Lots arr. Jared Yapp This song is a favourite for me. It encapsulates the sick desperation of finding something that feels right (a song, a person, a feeling) and knowing that the world has the capacity to take it from you at any point. I think Jared has instinctively tapped into that darkness in this arrangement. Order Has Abandoned Us arr. Joseph Twist This song is about entropy and our eventual slide toward chaos. For me music has always been something to grasp onto to prevent emotional entropy in myself. Playing a song about chaos alongside an orchestra is like speaking a storm and I think Joe has pulled together those themes beautifully. Vibrations in Air arr. Ellis I wrote this song many years ago at a point in my life when I was almost certain that nothing was going to happen with my music career. The idea that these things that I d invested so much emotional energy into would never be more than vibrations moving through the air without ever making a connection was heartbreaking. So to be playing it in this context with George s beautifully sympathetic arrangement is an overwhelming experience. Bug Eyed Beauty arr. Thomas Green This was the final song I wrote for my most recent album, The Beginning and the End of Everything. I had just bought a 12-string guitar and I literally wrote the song in my head in the car on the way home. It ended up as the first song on the album and it has opened every solo show I ve done since its release. Tom s arrangement is dramatic, cinematic and romantic, and hearing a song that I wrote in my head in an orchestral context is quite amazing, as it s gone well beyond my original imaginings. Leeward Side arr. Lachlan Skipworth This was the lead single from The Beginning and the End of Everything, a song about learning to let things you love loose into the world away from your protection. I love the urgency in the recorded version, and Lachlan took that feeling on, didn t lose any of the energy and added a symphonic drama. Watching this song leave my side and return as something new is very much in the spirit of the track. Fill You In arr. Green This was one of the first songs I wrote as a solo artist, and it really put me on a new path musically. Animal imagery and imaginary landscapes began to creep into this song and others, and Tom beautifully interpreted that sense of fantasy into the dynamics of his arrangement. Clovis Sons arr. Andrew Howes This track was inspired by a painting. The image [see page 8] depicts the story of the sons of the 7th-century King Clovis II, hamstrung and set adrift on a river as punishment for attempting to overthrow their father. I was fascinated by the story, but through further research discovered it was not true, and in fact Clovis sons succeeded him amicably after he died of old age. This became a song about how without examination, fiction can be presented as unquestioned truth. I like that Andrew s arrangement mirrors the classical style of the image, still hung in the Art Gallery of NSW. 9

9 Middle of the Hill arr. Howes In 2006 this song really brought my music to the attention of a broader audience and kick-started my career. I owe this song a lot, and am so proud to have seen it start as a home demo recording, travel the world with me performing to growing audiences, and now to have matured through Andrew s reinterpretation and be performed with the SSO in such an iconic venue as this. We ve seen a lot together, this song and I. The Summer arr. Twist For me this song represents a feeling of simple happiness inspired by simple things. A feeling I chase and try to contain in my adult life. Music has always been the most consistent source of that feeling for me. Joe s arrangement has allowed me to experience this song and that joy in a new context. Love Lies arr. Alice Humphries When I recorded this song for my third album, I knew it would be the last track on the record. I wanted the outro to be instrumental and quite orchestral, almost a joyful exhalation, a sigh of relief at the end of a difficult but successful journey. Hearing this song with Alice s arrangement with an actual orchestra has highlighted that sense, and the romantic imagery in the song even more. Where Two Oceans Meet arr. Ellis The recorded version of this song is deliberately stripped back very intimate to reflect the lyrics. But the idea behind the song is vast, the idea extends beyond the here and now. George s sensitive arrangement has found the perfect balance between the intimacy of the lyrics and the scope of the actual message. It s a perfect way to say goodnight.
