1 24 Curated by Nicolas Altstaedt Saturday 9 Monday 11 June 2018

2 Welcome From the curator Nicolas Altstaedt Since I came to Australia for the first time in 2008, I have always been welcomed with open arms and open minds. During my visits to the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and also at the Musica Viva Festival in 2015 with the Australian Youth Orchestra, there has always been one message that has been clearly communicated to me: Anything is possible. The vision of Ulrike Klein and Alison Beare at UKARIA goes further. The freedom of making music in the middle of nature with artists that are close to you couldn t be better circumstances to explore music, meet new friends and raise questions together. My choice of the program for the weekend is an attempt for variety rather than thematic rigour. Playing music throughout the last centuries from Mozart to Shostakovich is equally important to me as music of our time by my friend Jörg Widmann. A final thank you also belongs to Colin Cornish. UKARIA is a place for the future and I could not imagine a better one than in the hands of the AYO. They have been a big inspiration since I have been in Australia and I am tremendously looking forward to making music with them in these few days, which will be an enriching experience for all of us. Nicolas Altstaedt s appearance at UKARIA is made possible by a generous donation from the estate of the late Dr. J. Richard Knight of New York. (C)age of Enlightenment Saturday 9 June 6.30pm In a place like UKARIA, that is so connected with nature and protected from digitalization and industrialisation, it is essential to play music by Haydn; a man who lived for almost 30 years in the countryside, constantly changing the way of music history and developing our art form like no one else after him, exploring the world and people with his extraordinary mind in connection with nature. After visiting UKARIA for a day in September it felt indispensable to program the music of John Cage, for the questions it raises: What is music? What is silence? What is nature and our awareness of how we can protect it? - Nicolas Altstaedt John Cage: Living Room Music Percussionists from Momentum Ensemble Joseph Haydn: Cello Concerto No.1 in C major, Hob. VIIb/1 Momentum Ensemble INTERVAL Jörg Widmann: Selections from 24 Duos for Violin and Cello Sándor Veress: Transylvanian Dances for String Orchestra Momentum Ensemble Duration: Approximately 100 minutes, including interval. Followed by Canapés at 8.15pm 3

3 Chris Herzfeld Camlight Productions Visual Polyphony Sunday 10 June 11.00am Music is the subtlest form of communication humanity possesses. A classical concert doesn t need supplements, but on the other hand music is only one form of communication and connected to others it is how human beings express themselves. As much as it is necessary to create and listen to music on its own, it is part of our life to also explore its roots and its meaning. Performing Bach with dance is certainly not a new idea, but the freedom and the energy I feel at UKARIA created the space and the wish in me to have a platform where the music that is inspired by dance forms meets its children. - Nicolas Altstaedt J.S. Bach: Cello Suite No.1 in G major, BWV 1007 J.S. Bach: Cello Suite No.5 in C minor, BWV 1011 Matte Roffe* dancer Zoë Dunwoodie * dancer * appears courtesy of the Australian Dance Theatre. Chronos and Kairos Sunday 10 June 6.30pm In 2016, UK classical music magazine Gramophone listed both Vilde Frang and Lawrence Power among the most notable performers of Mozart s Sinfonia Concertante in the history of recordings. We re incredibly fortunate to have both these artists perform together at UKARIA with the next generation of Australian musicians. In the second half, a very special arrangement of Shostakovich s final Symphony No.15 concludes an evening of world-class chamber music. John Cage: Child of Tree Percussionists from Momentum Ensemble W.A. 4 Photo Jack Liebeck Teacher and Student Monday 11 June 11.00am The spiritual and mental qualities that are represented by a really deep national culture are always universal. And further, as in the nature of every culture, it changes from time to time and, like a mirror, reflects the life of a nation from another angle. It is in this mirror that creative artists, poets and writers, who are embodied in the nation, see the contours of their work. - Sándor Veress Three of the world s leading string players perform rarely heard masterpieces by two of Hungary s most influential composers: Zoltán Kodály and Sándor Veress. Zoltán Kodály: Duo for Violin and Cello, Op.7 Sándor Veress: String Trio Lawrence Power viola Duration: Approximately 50 minutes without interval. Followed by Lunch at 12.00pm. Visionary Friendship Monday 11 June 2.30pm In 2010, Nicolas Altstaedt gave a highly acclaimed performance of the Schumann Cello Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival. Since then, the concerto has become a staple in his repertoire. For this performance, he leads the talented young musicians of Momentum Ensemble in a new arrangement for soloist and string orchestra by Michael Waterman. And what better work to pair it with than the monumental second Piano Quartet of Brahms? Vilde Frang, Lawrence Power, Nicolas Altstaedt and Denis Kozhukhin unite to form a powerhouse quartet in the thrilling conclusion to UKARIA 24. Robert Schumann: Cello Concerto in A minor, Op.129 (arr. by M. Waterman for soloist with string orchestra) Momentum Ensemble INTERVAL Johannes Brahms: Piano Quartet No.2 in A major, Op. 26 Lawrence Power viola Denis Kozhukhin piano Duration: Approximately 100 minutes including interval. 6 7
