2 Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in In 2002 it was appointed the Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford in an agreement between the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University and the Orchestra. This Residency, the first of its kind amongst British orchestras, offers training, tuition and performing opportunities to students, as well as access to a prestigious season of concerts for students and academics alike. On Thursday 2 November, the Orchestra presents a concert in celebration of its 15th Anniversary as Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford. Works by Professors Robert Saxton and Martyn Harry will be performed alongside Sturdivant Adams POLIN, chosen from the 2017 Composers Workshop. This concert will also feature the choirs of Merton and Queen s, as well as Dr John Traill in a conducting role, and Christ Church alumna, Savitri Grier, as soloist in Mendelssohn s Violin Concerto. In 2017/18, the Oxford Philharmonic welcomes a litany of world-renowned performers to expand the musical opportunities and horizons of the Oxford student body. In our masterclass series, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lars Vogt, Maxim Vengerov, Steven Isserlis and Emmanuel Pahud will share their insight into the playing of their respective instruments. Our Music Director, Marios Papadopoulos, will give a conducting masterclass in February which is run in conjunction with the Oxford Conducting Institute. In addition, Oxford Philharmonic principals Charlotte Scott and Jon Thorne will give a chamber music masterclass in Michaelmas term. The application process for these events is detailed on page 11. All our masterclasses are free and open to the public. Please visit oxfordphil.com or call to reserve a space. The Oxfordshire Concerto Competition returns this year, culminating in the Final on Saturday 3 March at Oxford Town Hall, in which the three competitors will play a full concerto with the Oxford Philharmonic under the baton of Dr John Traill. The winner and both runners-up will receive a cash prize. For details of how to apply, see page 4. The Oxford Philharmonic provides a number of other performing opportunities to Oxford University students. This year, we once again offer our Apprenticeship Scheme to string players. Apprentices perform in several of the Orchestra s concerts during the season and receive mentoring from OPO players. The Young Artists Platform offers students the opportunity to give a short recital before an Oxford Philharmonic concert. For details of how to apply, see page 11. Finally, we are pleased to announce that our popular Composers Workshop will be expanded this year, now taking place over two separate dates. One piece will be chosen to be premiered in a future Oxford Philharmonic season. We hope that there is something in this programme that excites and inspires each one of you. Please ensure you apply early for any scheme of interest to avoid disappointment. Performance and Tuition Opportunities Orchestral Apprenticeship (strings only) Professional orchestral experience and training is available to string instrumentalists. Candidates selected by audition will be invited to play in up to four concerts with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and will receive coaching and an award of 100 per concert. Young Artists Platform An opportunity for an outstanding soloist or a chamber ensemble to perform a short recital in the Sheldonian Theatre prior to an OPO evening concert. The scheme is available to fulltime students of the University of Oxford, and is open to all instrumentalists and singers. Performers will receive an award of 100 for their recital. Audition Information If you fit the criteria you may apply for both Orchestral Apprenticeship and Young Artists Platform schemes Application deadline: 5pm on 6 November 2017 Applicants will be invited to perform two contrasting pieces or movements lasting no longer than fifteen minutes. Please provide your own accompanist if required. For the Orchestral Apprenticeship audition there will be a sight-reading test, taken from standard orchestral repertoire, which will be available thirty minutes prior to the audition Auditions will be held between 2pm and 5pm on 29 November 2017 at the Denis Arnold Hall of the Faculty of Music Tuition Opportunities The OPO offers music students the opportunity to receive tuition from the Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic: the elite group of Principal players of the Orchestra, and other members. For more information please contact Beau Marshall at beau@oxfordphil.com. My year as an apprentice with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra has included some of the most exciting and exhilarating musical experiences of my life. The opportunity to play in an orchestra of world-class musicians so frequently at my age is unheard of amongst my peers, and it has given me a very strong grounding in orchestral playing. The experience has been invaluable on so many levels, and it provides an education no student music-making experience can offer. Tom Fetherstonhaugh 2 3

Furthermore, for concerts with multiple ticket prices, students can get 5 off the price of any ticket. 6 Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the leading orchestras in the UK. Praised as excellent by Gramophone Magazine and thoroughly impressive by BBC Music Magazine, the Orchestra s reputation is based on the uncompromising artistic standards of its founder and music director, Marios Papadopoulos, and maintained by some of the finest musicians in the UK. Established in 1998 and formerly known as Oxford Philomusica, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra occupies a unique position within the UK orchestral landscape. As an orchestra of the highest quality, the Oxford Philharmonic attracts some of the world s greatest artists to appear in its series at Sir Christopher Wren s Sheldonian Theatre, including Sir András Schiff, Martha Argerich, Valery Gergiev, Lang Lang, Janine Jansen, Maria-João Pires, Renée Fleming, Pinchas Zukerman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Nigel Kennedy. Following his remarkable Oxford debut with the Orchestra in 2013, world-renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov became its first Artist in Residence. Over an unprecedented four-season collaboration, Vengerov and the Oxford Philharmonic performed across the UK and have recorded the violin concertos of Brahms and Sibelius. With a commercial release pending, both recordings have received exclusive plays on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and the leading classical station in the United States, WQXR. Future projects with Vengerov include a recording of Mendelssohn s Octet and an appearance at a major UK summer festival in July 2018 with The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic - a tight-knit group of musicians described by The Times as the ensemble s glorious individual players. The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra s many achievements to date include extensive annual concert seasons in Oxford, touring performances across the UK and a growing list of international engagements; acclaimed 10 recordings of Haydn s The Creation with New College Choir, and the Handel/Mendelssohn Acis and Galatea with Christ Church Choir; major anniversary celebrations of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven; family concerts; the annual Piano Festival and Summer Academy and the Orchestra s acclaimed Chamber Music Series showcasing The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic. The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra has been firmly committed to outreach work from its earliest days. Its various projects focus on taking music to areas of social and economic disadvantage, including work in special schools and hospitals. In 2002, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra was appointed as the University of Oxford s first ever Orchestra in Residence. As part of this, the Oxford Philharmonic collaborates with the Faculty of Music in educational programmes for the student community, while partnerships with Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council provide tuition and performance opportunities for hundreds of talented young musicians each season. The Orchestra and its Music Director were awarded the City of Oxford s Certificate of Honour in 2013, in recognition of their contribution to education and performance in Oxford. The continual search for excellence underpins the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra s reputation, and is reflected in an orchestra that strives to create bold musical statements with every concert it presents. The Residency Programme is supported by the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Trust The University of Oxford logo is the registered trademark of the University of Oxford. Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra is licensed to use the mark in the branding of events in the United Kingdom.
