3 In 1992, after studying at the Cork School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, Mark was chosen as the winner of the RTE Musician of the Future competition. On his return to Ireland later that year, he was appointed Associate Principal Trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra, a post he held for four years. Over the past fifteen years he has appeared as soloist with the BBCSSO performing new works by Judith Bingham, Mark Anthony Turnage, Thea Musgrave and Tansy Davies, as well as concertos by Telemann, Haydn, Hummel and Shostakovich. Mark s website is www. markotrumpet.com In addition to his career with the BBCSSO, he is a committed chamber musician playing with ensembles which share his passion for new music, including guest Principal Trumpet with London Sinfonietta, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Orchestra of Scottish Opera, Royal Flemish Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. STEVENSON WINDS Stevenson Winds is the Conservatoire s prestige wind ensemble created to promote the outstanding talent in the Woodwind Department at the RCS. Whilst the core ensemble comprises the traditional wind octet line-up (pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns), it is also frequently expanded and reduced to encompass the broadest spectrum of repertoire. Since its debut in 2009, the ensemble has performed to widespread critical and audience acclaim at numerous prestigious venues and several high profile festivals such as Perth s International Arts and Lammermuir. The ensemble is named in memory of the influential benefactor Sir Daniel Stevenson ( ). Passionate about music, Stevenson was instrumental in the creation of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in At this time the corner building in St George s Place, Glasgow, was acquired through his generosity and today the main concert hall at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland bears his name. 4 Sept Danses from Les Malheurs de Sophie This suite for wind ensemble was arranged in 1970 by the composer from his original ballet score Les Malheurs de Sophie (The Misfortunes of Sophie), originating from The ballet itself was derived from a French children s tale written by Rostov Leine about the exploits and calamities of a naughty little girl named Sophie. In Sept Dances, Françaix s score brilliantly encapsulates Sophie s mischievous spirit as she greedily overeats at afternoon tea, holds a funeral for a favourite doll, shaves off her eyebrows and cuts up, cooks, and devours her mother s pet goldfish! This wonderful arrangement has unsurprisingly become a standard piece, whereas the original orchestral score sadly remains comparatively obscure. LEOŠ JANÁČEK ( ) Mladi for Wind Quintet and Bass Clarinet Janáček s Mladi, for wind quintet and bass clarinet, was premiered in 1924, the year of the composer s seventieth birthday. He was asked to recount some memoirs of his younger days for a planned biography and the wind suite was the result of this venture. Mladi significantly means Youth and reflects on Janáček s schoolboy years as a chorister in Brno. The work is heavily influenced by Moravian folksong, and indeed its main theme, announced in the opening Allegro, and featured again in the Allegro Animato finale, is derived from the speech patterns of the words Youth, Golden Youth in Moravian language. GIDEON KLEIN ( ) Divertimento for wind octet Like Janáček, Gideon Klein was also born in Moravia, in Of Jewish parents, his early musical studies and burgeoning career as a concert pianist were cut short by the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia 1939, and he was deported along with many compatriots to the transit camp of Terezin in Whilst it has always been known that he became active as a composer and in the cultural life of the ghetto, it was assumed that his output was negligible prior to this. However, the wind octet, along with several other manuscripts were discovered in 1990 in a locked suitcase which had been kept for 50 years by the Herzog family, friends of the Kleins from before the war. It is heavily influenced by the works of Schoenberg and Janáček and shows considerable technical expertise and musical maturity for one so young. Le Gay Paris The light, witty charm and clear, sparkling orchestration of Le Gay Paris is instantly recognizable as characteristic of Françaix s music. Françaix had an abiding interest in chamber music and developed an association with the Bläser Ensemble Mainz that led to the composition of many works for wind ensemble, including Le Gay Paris, which they premièred in 1975 with solo trumpeter Carole Dawn Reinhart. Heather Nicoll Head of Woodwind EMMANUEL LAVILLE Emmanuel Laville grew up in a French village near Bordeaux, where he discovered the oboe. He graduated from the Paris Conservatoire in 2006 and spent one year in Munich as a member of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra Academy. Emmanuel was then appointed Principal Oboe of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2008, a post he held until 2012 when he was appointed the position of Principal Oboe in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Emmanuel also appears regularly as a guest artist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Winner of the 2011 Gillet-Fox International Oboe Competition organised by the International Double Reed Society, Emmanuel was also a laureate at the Prague Spring Festival International Competition in MARK O KEEFFE Creative Scotland winner 2003, Mark O Keeffe has held the post of principal trumpet with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since December He is a native of County Cork, Ireland, where he began his musical studies at the age of seven. After playing in the local brass band and receiving trumpet lessons from his father, his love of the trumpet developed.
