The Cory Band made history in 2016 by winning an elusive Grand Slam and becoming the first band in history to be Quadruple Champions simultaneously holding the National, Open, European and Brass in Concert titles. However, it has a long and illustrious history. Formed in 1884, it originally bore the name 'Ton Temperance'. In 1895 Sir Clifford Cory, the local colliery owner, heard the band and offered to provide financial assistance, resulting in the band's change of name to Cory. In 1980 the band became European Champion and in 1984, its centenary year, it won the third in a hat-trick of National titles at the Royal Albert Hall, London, conducted by the charismatic Major Arthur Kenney. In 2000 the band achieved an historic double by winning both the Nationals and, for the first time in its history, the British Open, conducted by Dr. Robert Childs. In the band achieved a hat-trick of European Brass Band Champion titles. Since 2012 the band has been conducted by Philip Harper, winning another two European titles (2013, 2016), two Nationals (2013 and 2015) three Brass in Concert titles (2012, 2013, 2015) and the British Open (2016). In 2014 it became the inaugural winner of TV Channel S4C's Band Cymru programme. It toured Australia in 2013, and the USA in February 2016, 40 years after its last visit. The Cory Band has also developed musically outside of the contest field. In 2001, together with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales it was appointed as resident ensemble to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and in the same year appointed Dr John Pickard as its 'Composer in Residence'. John Pickard's tenure with the band ended in July 2005 when the band made history giving the première performance of his Gaia Symphony at the prestigious Cheltenham International Festival. 4

The Symphony was broadcast live on Radio 3, and lasting over an hour in duration, is currently the largest scale original work in the repertory. The band is dedicated to new music, raising the profile of the brass band genre and keeping music alive in Wales. It has an active commissioning policy and has performed works by many of Britain's leading composers; John McCabe, Judith Bingham, Elgar Howarth, Edward Gregson, Alun Hoddinott, Karl Jenkins, Gareth Wood, David Bedford, to name but a few. The band's current 'Composer in Residence' is Christopher Bond. Cory is also passionate about education, and the Cory Academy was established in It is, in effect, Cory Band's outreach programme, and there are now 15 local member bands for which Cory Band provides tuition and advice to young players on a weekly basis, as well as recruiting in local schools. The Cory Band is recognised as one the Principality's finest and most innovative music ensembles. Its numerous CD recordings and live concert performances have received worldwide acclaim. 5

Philip Harper - Cory Band Musical Director Philip Harper became Musical Director of the Cory Band in Since then he has won all the major trophies, including an unprecedented Grand Slam of major titles in 2016: the European, the British Open, the Nationals and Brass in Concert, all won in a single calendar year. As well as becoming the only living conductor to have achieved a conventional Grand Slam, he became the only ever conductor to achieve what has since become known as the Harper Slam. Philip won the coveted 4barsrest.com Conductor of the Year Award in 2013, 2015 and In recent years he was a guest conductor of the Manger Musikklag Band in Norway, the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Symphonic Brass, amongst many others. A resident of Gloucester, Philip was the Editor of Brass Band World magazine between 2009 and 2015 and, since 2005 has been the Music Editor of the historic Wright and Round publishing company. Philip is a prolific composer and his original works and arrangements are played all over the world. In 2015 he composed A Shakespearean Triptych for a 650- strong joint ensemble and choir conducting the first performance in a packed Royal Albert Hall at the Last Night of the Schools Prom. You can find out more detail and listen to audio excerpts of Philip's music at En route to this point in his life, Philip graduated from the University of Bristol in 1994 before going on to take a Masters Degree in Composition and a Post- Graduate Certificate in Education. He had a successful performing career and was the principal tenor horn of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the Sun Life Band in Bristol, as well as winning through to the Brass Final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in Between 1996 and 1998 he lived in Japan and was a guest soloist with most of the 'British-style' brass bands with whom he still keeps a close connection, visiting annually. 6

Adjudicators Richard Jones - BMus (Hons), MA, PhD Richard hails from Aberystwyth, a coastal resort in West Wales. His initial experiences in music were through his primary school but mostly through the guidance of his peripatetic teacher Alan Phillips. During this period he became a member of the county youth orchestras, symphonic wind band and brass bands and this led to participation in both the National Youth Brass Bands of Wales and Great Britain. Following his move to the University of Huddersfield in 1996 he began tuition with Phillip McCann and participated in the University Brass band, later becoming the principal cornet in his final year. Richard completed his BMus(Hons) degree at the university in 1999 and at the conclusion of his final year he was awarded the Harry Mortimer Scholarship for his performance and contribution to the music department. He continued his academic studies at the University by enrolling on the Master of Arts postgraduate composition course where he was tutored by Patrick Standford and Professor Christopher Fox. He has composed several pieces of music for differing instrumentation, including for international recorder artist Jill Kemp, and had numerous arrangements both performed and published. In 1996/97 he became a member of the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band, initially as a player and for some years as a participant on the band committee. He was part of the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band that completed the hat trick of All England Masters, National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain and European Championships in 1998 and went on to win numerous other contests. Between 2002 and 2007 Richard completed a Doctor of Philosophy postgraduate degree at the University of Sheffield under the guidance of Professors Jonathan Stock and Stephanie Pitts. His topic for the doctorate was Banding Together: Power, Identity and Interaction Within the Concert and Contest Performance Contexts of the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass band. This topic delved into the psychology and social construction of the band through its performance practices. 7

Richard has a substantial portfolio of teaching experience having been a successful visiting lecturer at both the universities of Huddersfield and Sheffield, a long distance tutor (whilst a postgraduate), and delivered modules on Bands Around the World. Today he is a brass tutor at the ACCENT Music Education Hub, teaching in primary, secondary and special education needs schools. In recent years he has been responsible for organising combined projects with the Fodens Brass Band and Halle Orchestra. Simon Howell After studying for his Bachelor of Music at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with Sean O Neill (WNO), Simon accepted a Scholarship to study at The Royal Academy of Music, London, under Patrick Harrild (London Symphony Orchestra). During his time at the Academy he won various brass prizes including the Mark Elliot Brass Prize and the MA Maud Morgan Award. Simon enjoys playing with a wide range of professional ensembles which has seen him perform regularly on live broadcasts on BBC Radio, Channel 4, S4C and ITV Television and various session recordings for TV commercials including "Mcdonalds". Concert tours of USA, Canada and Europe have seen him perform in some of the world s finest concert halls with many top artists and celebrities including Bryn Terfel, Elton John, John Owen Jones, Katherine Jenkins, Hayley Westenra, Rick Wakeman, Sir Roger Moore and Dame Felicity Lott. Simon is an extra with some of the country s finest orchestras including, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal National Scottish Orchestra. 8
