1 BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS AUGUST 2013 Dean: Mary Bronaugh Davis Sub-Dean: Chloe Stodt Bombarde Editor: Roseann Penner Kaufman FROM THE DEAN: I am excited that we have a full season of interesting, exciting programs and projects. We ll be busy, but that is fine. Someone told me I could relax after planning all my programs last year. However, I find that I am more involved than ever in overseeing everything. KCAGO is the logical and leading organization for area organists and organ enthusiasts in our area. With a membership of around 200, we are (as we should be) the supportive pillar for organ programs and concerts throughout the area. Through our corroborative efforts great programs featuring the organ can continue for the enjoyment of all. The Kansas City Symphony and Kauffman need our assistance when organ concerts are presented in Helzberg Hall. The Symphony has already communicated the message that unless the Symphony Organ Series is financially viable, it could become nonexistent. This season the Symphony Organ Series is bringing in three organists and Kauffman is publicizing two organ concerts. It is thrilling that Kansas City has such a marvelous instrument. It is with pride we must promote its continued use and encourage others to experience our wonderful world of organ. There has been much talk and excitement regarding our First Annual French Organ Festival. Since the French Festival occurred after the deadline for the September Bombarde, a full report will be on the agenda next month. Mary Bronaugh Davis, Dean SEPTEMBER 16th, Monday DINNER, MEETING, PROGRAM For our September meeting we will be venturing North of the River to Liberty, MO. Organist Ahreum Han impressed us so much at the 2012 AGO National Convention in Nashville that we invited her to play a program for us on the Quimby organ in Gano Chapel on the William Jewell College campus. Dinner that evening will be at the Liberty Christian Church, 427 East Kansas, just down the hill from campus- punch bowl at 6:00, dinner at 6:15, program at 7:30. In an effort to Grow the Guild please invite a non-member organist or enthusiast to join with us on this occasion. To add a bit of interest to the evening, please bring spare church bulletins left over from the previous day s service. Those who have full time Sunday positions don t often get a chance to see and hear what other congregations are doing. Having several bulletins from various churches at each table gives us a chance to share our profession with others.
2 DINNER RESERVATIONS This year we have a new Dinner Reservation Chairperson. Call Sharon Davies at or reservation@kcago.com by 10:00 p.m. the Wednesday before our meeting. Sharon will confirm your e- mail reservations, so if you don t get a confirmation, please call. Remember, if you have a permanent reservation and miss dinner, you are still obligated to pay for your meal. Dinner Menu (Catered by Meissen s Catering) Pineapple grilled chicken with wild rice Baby carrots, Sugar snapped peas Green salad, Rolls, Blackberry or Apple Cobbler Coffee, tea Cost: $10.00 Board Meeting The next meeting is Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 10:30 am at Immanuel Lutheran in Westport. All committee chairs, elected positions and long-range planning committee members are expected to attend. If you must be absent please contact Carol Wallace at or carolwallace@kclibrary.org. P.O.P (PIPE ORGAN PARTY) In conjunction with the Kansas City Music Teachers Association's Fall Festival (which is a Baroque theme) our Youth Chair, Ann Posey, is planning a Saturday afternoon, October 12 th (1:00 3:30) at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church. Piano students will have an opportunity to play their prepared piano piece on an organ and/or harpsichord along with various other activities, ending with an ice cream social. MUSIC FOR SALE Attention Teachers and Organists! As you begin this year, mark SEPTEMBER 6 (9-2), AND SEPTEMBER 7 (9-5) on your calendars. The Noted Grands, a group of KCMTA teachers (who are grandmothers), will hold a MUSIC SALE at the home of Donna LaBach, W. 121st Street; Overland Park, KS Some of us have retired from teaching, some are downsizing homes; all are cleaning out music and related supplies. Both piano and organ music will be included in the sale. SCHOLA CANTORUM The Schola Cantorum of the GKCAGO is in need of Tenor and Bass singers. Please contact the director, Dr. Anthony Maglione, at maglionea@william.jewell.edu to schedule an audition. 6 GKCAGO ORGAN LIBRARY UPDATE Contents The donated organ music in our chapter library has now been re-sorted, inventoried, and re-filed in fourteen standard letter/legal storage boxes. Arranging the music in broad categories, then alphabetically by composer/arranger/compiler last names, offered a potentially quick and easy way to identify and retrieve scores. Here is a breakdown of the new categories: SET 1 (4 boxes): Organ Repertoire SET 2 (3 boxes): Hymn/Chorale Tune-Based Repertoire SET 3 (2 boxes): Anthologies/Collections SET 4 (1 box): Christmas SET 5 (1 box): Duets (keyboard-keyboard)/organ & Instruments/Wedding SET 6 (1 box): Organ Pedagogy/Books/Miscellaneous Items SET 7 (1 box): Mixed & Popular (organ transcriptions, hymn/chorale organ & voice, pop organ, pop piano, pop piano & voice) SET 8 (1 box): Piano (repertoire, pedagogy, sacred, jazz) The contents of each set and its respective boxes are recorded in a thirty-three page pdf catalog file. Each page of the catalog contains the following information: Category Name Composer/Arranger/Compiler Name Title Volume or Edition number if applicable Publisher Season where specified Printed Price if available OR assigned price Where there are multiple boxes in one set (e.g. Organ Repertoire), the contents of each box are highlighted in a different color in the catalog file for easier identification and access. A printout of contents is included inside each box. Access and Purchasing The organ/other music and books were transferred to Parkville (MO) Presbyterian Church, thanks to GKCAGO member Paul Erickson. Presently, we are no longer accepting donated music, and music will no longer be brought to chapter meetings. Instead, interested persons may view the complete catalog by clicking here or by clicking the MUSIC 4 SALE tab on the GKCAGO home page. To purchase music (at 50% of the printed price, except where noted), please music4sale@kcago.com with your request, and include your list of items (first come, first served). The monitor will tally the amounts and reply with the total due, copying Paul Erickson and the church secretary. The purchaser may then call Parkville Presbyterian and arrange to pick up the designated items at the church at a mutually agreeable time. Paul will have the requested items ready for pickup, plus a stamped pre-addressed envelope. We regret that we cannot mail any music. A supply of envelopes pre-addressed to GKCAGO treasurer Lynn Bratney is included in the first box of Set 1, with extra mailing labels and a book of stamps. We expect payment on the honor system: purchasers, please leave your check (payable to GKCAGO, memo- music sale ) in the envelope provided, to be mailed from the church. Lynn Bratney will confirm receipt of your check with the music4sale monitor, who will then update the master catalog. Our chapter owes a deep debt of gratitude to Doris Daniels for her faithful caretaking of this collection over many years, and for her willingness to bring the music to the membership. I personally also thank Kathy Hellwege and Claudette Schiratti for their generous, kind, and cheerful help in sorting and interfiling the music; and Paul Erickson, for transporting and housing this collection. Our hope is that chapter members, teachers, and students alike will find many resources for further study and enjoyment. Respectfully, Chloe Stodt
