2 BOMBARDE Newsletter of the Greater Kansas City Chapter - AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS SUMMER ISSUE AUGUST 2006 NOTES FROM NAN... I hope you are enjoying the summer and having a good break from the hectic pace we keep from September through May. These months give us a chance for much-needed rest and an opportunity to reflect upon the past season, and to prepare for the new one just ahead. Many of us have scattered to various places for refreshment and relaxation. Speaking of summer travels, a number of our chapter members attended the 48 th biennial ChicAGO National Convention, July 2 nd through 6 th. Elsewhere in this issue you will find a list, compiled by Carlene Neihart, of those persons. The Sunday evening opening concert in Symphony Center included organists Philippe Belanger, Thierry Escaich, David Schrader and Maxine Thevenot performing recently composed works for organ and orchestra. Other recitalists heard during the week were Chelsea Chen, James O Donnell, Sophie-Veronique Cauchefer-Choplin of Paris, Thomas Murray, Alexander Fiseisky of Russia, Stefen Engels and Wolfgang Seifen of Germany. Organs by Æolian- Skinner, Austin, Berghaus, Casavant, Dobson, Fisk, Flentrop, Howell, Lyon & Healy, Marshall & Ogletree, Reuter, Rodgers, Schantz, Schlicker, E.M. Skinner, and others, were heard in beautiful settings. A myriad of workshops ranged from Gregorian chant to gospel. The pace was fast, yet we returned home refreshed by having spent time with colleagues from all over the world, renewing established friendships and making new ones. Until September--continue to relax and refresh! Nan Nan Hulett Dean JAN KRAYBILL NEWLY ELECTED Congratulations to Dr. Jan Kraybill who was nominated and has now been elected to be the new Councillor for Region VI. Installation of the National Council took place on July 3rd at the AGO's Annual Meeting held in the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Chicago. We are very pleased and proud to have Jan as a GKCAGO Chapter Member and we are also very fortunate to have her to represent us for the next two years. JAY CARTER FAREWELL CONCERT Jay Carter, counter tenor, and Mark Ball, pianist, presented Jay s area farewell concert Wednesday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Village Presbyterian Church. Jay has been soloist in many concerts with The Village Choir and has twice appeared as Contralto soloist with the Independence Messiah Choir in recent years.
3 He is quickly becoming recognized as one the nation's leading counter tenors. Jay and his family are moving to New Haven, CT later in the summer where he will begin graduate studies in early music at 47 TH CONSECUTIVE SEASON / INDEPENDENCE Each day this summer from June 1 and continuing through the last day of August, the Community of Christ International Headquarters, in Independence, is showcasing its two world-class pipe organs in programs hosted by musician travel guides (a.k.a., Staff s ) from many denominations in/around Greater Kansas City who, this season, are presenting informative half-hour demo-recitals featuring music from Around the World. Both the Auditorium and Temple worship spaces are pleasantly air conditioned, as well. If you have not yet had an opportunity to travel or take in music from The King of Instruments so far this summer, treat yourself, some friends and relatives from out of town or across town to a variety of organ literature by composers from America, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Russia and Spain, or many other places across the globe! This 47 th consecutive season of demo recitals continues a tradition initiated by Bethel Knoche following the installation, voicing and six month series of inaugural recitals celebrating The Auditorium Organ from November 1959 through April All programs are free of charge. Feel most welcome and comfortable dressing summer casual. The August calendar is as follows 1 Beth Elswick, Temple 2 Nancy Hershey, Temple 3 Barry Wenger, Temple The Yale Institute of Sacred Music. The program included music by Handel, Purcell, Quilter, and Hahn. 4 Robert Rowlett, Temple 5 July Conway, Temple 6 Jon Bertschinger, Temple 7 Barbara Tankard-Thatcher, Temple 8 Claudette Schiratti, Temple 9 Jon Bertschinger, Temple 10 Pam Robison, Temple 11 Wayne Smith, Temple 12 Aaron Jaynes, Temple 13 Robert Rowlett, Auditorium 14 William T Stewart, Temple 15 Barry Wenger, Temple 16 William T Stewart, Temple 17 Pam Robison, Temple 18 Junia Braby, Temple 19 John Davies, Auditorium 20 Andy Lang, Temple 21 Junia Braby, Temple 22 Claudette Schiratti, Temple 23 Barry Wenger, Temple 24 Dovie Fields, Temple 25 Jan Kraybill, Temple 26 Jeff King, Temple 27 Beth Elswick, Temple 28 Blake West, Temple 29 Wayne Smith, Temple 30 Carolyn Steele, Temple 31 Jan Kraybill, Temple EACH ONE, REACH ONE The National AGO announced a campaign for all chapters to revitalize and increase AGO membership last season. The emphasis continues. Each one of us is urged to reach out to a prospective member another organist, a music student, a potential Chapter Friend, a choir member, or an organ enthusiast. A personal word of invitation via a note, phone call, or may be all that is necessary to encourage another person to
4 join and begin benefiting from AGO. Why not offer a ride to a monthly meeting? Share that our members and presenters possess a broad range of talents, in many areas, and at various skill and educational levels. While we always want to encourage Certification, help to squelch the urban legend that certification is a necessary precursor to AGO membership. As you know, our programs cover a wide range of topics that we hope appeals to the entire spectrum of both current and potential members. EACH ONE, REACH ONE! Biennial National Convention ChicAGO 2006 & GKC AGO Carlene Neihart reports that the following GKC Chapter members attended this summer s National Convention. They are: Pam Castrey, Rick Deasley (Workshop Presenter), Dina Evans, Steve Hoover, Nan Hulett, Rosi Penner-Kauffman, Jan Kraybill, Chris Leaver, Debbie Lynch, Bill McCandless, Virginia Strohmeyer-Miles, Anna Myeong, Carlene Neihart, Steve Perry, Anne Marie Rigler, Wayne Smith, Ted Stewart, Mary Ellen Sutton, Barry Wenger, and Steve Wittman. FOLKS STILL ENTHUSED BY LAST SEASON S PROGRAMMING Hi Steve, I was so excited about Wayne Leupold's workshop in Kansas City. After I played the 9 o clock service last Sunday a 7 year old girl came timidly to the balcony to see the organ. After about 30 minutes of showing her some things about the organ and letting her try a couple of simple things we visited with her Dad. The upshot is now I am really excited about starting my first young student on the organ!!! We start on Thursday with her first "scheduled" lesson (actually second free lesson, as Wayne suggested). The material is really great and has wonderful student / teacher duets. Thanks for arranging to have Wayne come. I hope to take my school children over to see the organ next week or so and use the mouse coloring book to peak their interest. This is too much fun to be work!!! JOSEPH S NEWEST PIPE ORGAN WHO: Ken Cowan WHAT: Inaugural Organ Recital WHEN: September 24, :00 p.m. WHERE: First Baptist Church 13 th & Francis Streets WHY: A new pipe organ COST: No admission charge Considering an average cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the fact that a pipe organ can provide centuries of service, the installation of a new pipe organ is a major event for any congregation or community. The last new pipe organ in St. Joseph was installed in On September 24 TH at 4:00 p.m., St. Joseph s newest pipe organ in historic First Baptist Church will be inaugurated in a public recital by KEN COWAN, one of the most sought-after concert organists in North America. The recital is being underwritten by Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc., which built the new organ, and the public is cordially invited to see and hear this new instrument and to witness the musical artistry of Ken Cowan. Just 31 years old, Mr. Cowan, a native of Thorold, Ontario, Canada, has performed solo recitals across the United States and his homeland. He has won numerous awards, including first prizes at the Royal Canadian College of s National Competition and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music National Competition, where he received a Master s degree and Artist s Diploma. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In addition to his career as a recitalist, Cowan serves as Assistant Professor of Organ at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New
9 Jersey. He has held associate organist positions at prominent New York City churches, and has been on the organist roster of the famous Wanamaker Grand Court organ in Philadelphia. Numerous critically acclaimed compact disc recordings by Mr. Cowan are available under the JAV label - Many of his recordings and live performances are regularly featured on the PIPEDREAMS radio program. Mr. Cowan is represented by Karen MacFarlane Artists. In addition to his reputation for outstanding facility and sensitive playing, Mr. Cowan regularly plays a prodigious concert repertoire entirely from memory, an unusual feat because, in addition to playing with both hands and feet, an organist must control the volume and sequence changes between keyboards and the selection of stops. This challenge is compounded by the fact that concert organists must adjust their playing and choice of stops for each recital, because selection, timbre and balance between individual voices varies from organ to organ. The new pipe organ in First Baptist Church was designed and built by Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc. of Warrensburg, Missouri. It was made possible by a bequest from the estate of sisters, Dora Miller and Elizabeth Benight. Miss Miller was the organist at King Hill Baptist Church for many years. The new organ is installed behind the impressive quarter-sawn oak case of the previous instrument, installed in 1915 by the Bennett Organ Co. of Rock Island, Illinois. The new organ incorporates some pipework from the previous organ, which has been re-voiced, re-scaled and in some cases, re-pitched by the Quimby firm for incorporation into the new organ. Quimby also built new electro-pneumatic pitman chests for this instrument, which retains a 1952 Austin console. The new organ retains the warm Romantic character of the former organ, but has a greater variety of flute and string tones. There are 34 ranks of pipes across three manuals and pedal, making the organ one of the larger instruments in the area Officers...
