1 Dean: Mary Bronaugh Davis Sub-Dean: Chloe Stodt BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS AUGUST 2013 Bombarde Editor: Roseann Penner Kaufman FROM THE DEAN: The first thing I want to do as your new Dean is to thank our Immediate Past Dean, Claudette Schiratti and her crew for an outstanding 75 th Celebration Year for KCAGO. That was a big milestone and it was celebrated in grand style! Our momentum does not slacken during the fourth quarter and the home stretch of our century of existence! Many exciting and varied programs are on tap to make this KCAGO year outstanding. Festival Bookends will open and close our program year! The French Festival announces the beginning; Bachathon celebrates a finale. THE YEAR IN A NUTSHELL: August 25 th is our opening event with a brand new schedule addition. Mario Pearson came up with the plans for a First Annual French Festival to be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 416 West 12 th Street in downtown Kansas City, MO. The time is 1:00 to 5:00, Sunday afternoon to accommodate as many players as possible. Besides enjoying an afternoon of French music, be sure to check out the delicious delicacies of the French Café which is located within hearing distance of the performers. September 16 th Ahreum Han, organist will entertain us on the Quimby organ in Gano Chapel on the William Jewell College campus. She impressed us all during the AGO National Convention in Nashville in October 12 th. Plans are in the making to have a Fall Festival Organ Party where youth may try out their piano pieces on a pipe organ or harpsichord. October 21 st Anthony Maglione will direct a choral and brass concert at Visitation Catholic Church. Randolph Lee, trumpeter is stopping in Kansas City on the way to his concert in New York. November 18 th Christopher Houlihan, who consistently receives rave reviews throughout the United States and other countries will be at the Community of Christ Auditorium. January 12 th Dave Wickerham will entertain us on the Music Hall Theater pipe organ. This is cosponsored with the Kansas City Theater Pipe Organ club. January 25 th is our January Jubilee, a full day of various one-hour workshops for prospective members as well as for our current membership. There will be something for everybody. February 17 th is a Choral Service on LIGHT. This service was an outstanding event of the 2012 AGO Nashville National Convention. Anthony Maglione, from William Jewell is Director.
2 March 17 th Gregory Peterson, organist comes highly recommended. Joint sponsored with Atonement Lutheran Church. April 21 st the day after Easter we will tour the Reuter Organ Factory in Lawrence, KS and progress to the First United Methodist Church in downtown Lawrence. May 4 th will be the 35 th Annual Bachathon held at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral. May 19 th is your turn! A Members Recital will be at St. Andrew s Episcopal Church. Who wants to play? This summer I had the pleasure of attending an AGO Region Convention that was close to home. The Region VI Convention in Springfield, MO on June definitely surpassed expectations of all who attended. KCAGO had the most members in attendance except we couldn t come up with everybody s name in 15 seconds to win the prize. I had started writing down names whenever I spied anyone from our chapter, but (wouldn t you know) that list was back at the hotel. Attendees were: Dan Brown, Mary Davis, Jim Higdon, Steve Kucera, Barbara Leyton, Debbie Lynch (dual member), Jim Lytton (dual member), Mike Maiden, Mike Quimby, Ann Marie Rigler, Claudette Schiratti, and Chloe Stodt. A Highlight of the Convention for us in Kansas City came the first afternoon when Stephen Kucera was announced as 2 nd Place winner in the AGO/Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists. The winner was Jessica Park from the Twin Cities AGO Chapter. Stephen was the youngest competitor - having just turned 19 a few days before. He was eligible to play in Springfield because Jennifer Bower, in first place couldn t attend. Steve said afterwards he could play a safe program or pull out all the stops and go for broke (which he did). It paid off! There were many interesting Regional sessions including Michael Quimby s Workshop of answering questions about pipe organs, the Hymn Festival at First Baptist, Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Through the Ages, James Kibbie s Organ Recital (standing ovation), Jeremy Chesman s Carillon Recital (the one shade tree across the street was our landing spot), the a cappella singing of the Springfield Chamber Chorus, a recital by Michael Emmerich (2010 Rising Star performer at the AGO National Convention in Washington D.C., and Marie Rubis-Bauer played the closing concert. Finally, be sure to spread the word about the French Festival. A big attendance would be great for our first event. The line-up of performers is as follows: 1:00 Claudette Schiratti 1:30 John Deahl 2:00 Mary Bronaugh Davis 2:30 Thomas Zachacz 3:00 Rebecca Bell, organetto, Bill Banks, hurdy-gurdy 3:30 Paul Erickson 4:00 Ron Krebs, organ, Douglas Lawrence, Bass Baritone 5:00 Jan Kraybill Mary Davis, Dean
3 French Organ Music Festival geared for a great inaugural event It was a pleasant surprise to have all the time slots fill very quickly for the inaugural French Organ Music Festival that is scheduled for Sunday August 25 th at the Gold Dome Cathedral. We had to move the starting time up an hour to accommodate the interested performers. The festival now starts at 1pm and will conclude at 5pm. I am pleased to announce that the following performers will share a vast repertoire of the French music genre. Claudette Schiratti, Dr. Jan Kraybill, John Deahl, Ronald Krebs, Thomas Zachacz, Paul Erickson, Mary Davis as well as a music ensemble Organetto, Organistrum performing French dances on authentic instruments. This event is cosponsored by our chapter and GHT Cathedral and is indeed an exciting time for our chapter. Patrick Neas is planning a feature article in the Kansas City star and our local diocesan newspaper will do likewise. With your help and enthusiastic support this sister event to the Bachathon will be a rousing success. Attached is a PDF copy of the flyer to send to people in your list. You will also shortly receive a postcard in the mail in the mail o remind you of the event and to share with other organ music enthusiasts. At this time we need assistance in the following areas. Please contact the event chair, Dr. Mario Pearson at mpearson@kcgolddome.org to sign up. Ushers hand out programs, and collect free will donations. Hosts for the French café this will be located in the Cathedral south chapel so everyone can still see and hear the live performances. **Also, please visit to find a.pdf flyer to print and post to help get the word out about this spectacular festival!!!
