1 THE VOLUNTARY TRUMPET A PUBLICATION OF THE CHARLESTON CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS FEBRUARY 2018 The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. We encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music; inspire, educate, and offer certification for organists and choral conductors; provide networking, fellowship, and mutual support; nurture future generations of organists; promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles; and engage wider audiences with organ and choral music. SLATE OF OFFICERS Every two years, AGO chapters are mandated by headquarters to elect officers to continue the leadership of the chapter. It s that time again. The nominating committee was composed of Dr. Bill Gudger, Nancy Lefter, and Dr. Julia Harlow. Their nominations for the executive board are as follows. For Dean: Loretta Haskell Loretta is currently serving as Sub-Dean of the chapter. She was previously Dean in the years , leading the chapter in its first Pipe Organ Encounter Plus for adults. She is Director of Music and Organist at St. Mark s Episcopal Church, runs a vibrant private studio for voice and piano, and is the K4-Third Grade Music Teacher at Charleston Catholic. For Sub-Dean: Jennifer McPherson Jennifer is a relative newcomer to the chapter. She is Minister of Music and Organist at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church. Go here for a full biography: For Secretary: Nancy Lefter Nancy has served the chapter in a number of capacities over many years. She teaches at The Citadel in the Fine Arts area, directing the choir, teaching courses, and playing for weddings. She is the assistant organist at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. Nancy is a well-known jazz singer and can be heard frequently at celebratory functions around town. For Treasurer: Edmund LeRoy Ed has been treasurer since 2010 only because nobody else wants the job. He s the organist at Rodenberg Chapel at Franke at Seaside. Ed is Professor Emeritus of Music from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. At Large: Katie Holland (until 2022) Katie is a rostered Deacon in the ELCA and Minister of Music at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where she has served musically since 2010, directing the adult, children's, and handbell choirs. 2 2 At Large: Scott Atwood, CAGO (until 2022) Scott is Director of Music Ministries and Organist-Choirmaster at Christ Our King Catholic Church. Go here for a full biography: m/join_us Continuing At Large Members until 2020 Ann Hood Ann is Director of Traditional Music Ministries at the Church of the Holy Cross, Sullivan s Island. She is a long-time member of the Charleston Chapter. You ll receive an soon asking for write-in candidates. Start thinking now about others you might want to see serve on the board. And you can propose your-self for a position. Huey Waldon Huey is Director of Music and Organist at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Sullivan s Island. He is also active as music director for theatrical productions in the Charleston area. NEW PIPES FOR SUMMERALL In case you missed it, The Citadel has begun its restoration of the Summerall Chapel organ led by Cornel Zimmer Organ Builders. The new console is in place, a first step in a multi-phase project to restore and expand the historic pipe organ. At the completion of the project, this console will control the pipe organ of over 100 ranks! Installation of the Trompette Militaire on the rear wall is complete. This is the first real pipe stop to be added to the instrument. The case mimics the woodworking around the altar, and houses the blower in one tower, and the reservoir in the other. It is about 20' long, and hangs 24' above the chapel floor. The longest resonator is 8' long. The trompette was made by AR Schopps, voiced on 13" of wind. If you have a Facebook account, you can hear the trompette here: (You'll need to scroll through the photos.)
3 3 GODSPEED TO JACK CLEGHORN A long-time fixture in Charleston s musical scene, Jack Cleghorn left the Lowcountry in early fall to take up the post of Organist and Master of the Choristers at St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
