Beyond the Dots Recital Series

Welcome St Anne s College is pleased to present the Beyond the Dots recital series, providing innovative events that open up music through explanation and performance. I am delighted to again be welcoming a range of artists to this year s series, including St Anne s alumnus Jamie Savan, Cornett in His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts (St Anne s, ), double-bass specialist David Heyes, thereminist Lydia Kavina, and both the 2015 and 2016 St Anne s College Performance Scholars (Pippa Hampton French Horn, and Harry Baker Piano). The Cornish American Song Institute also return, showcasing twenty leading US voice students, with a separate recital from Drs David and Lelia Sadlier (University of Texas). We continue to promote innovation in the series, with the St Anne s Camerata again headlining the M@SH Contemporary Music Marathon at the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building (St. Hilda s College). 10 About the performers St Anne s College has a vibrant musical life that places outreach and development at the centre of the college s musical values. In partnership with the Oxfordshire County Music Service, the college recital series presents Beyond the Dots, a programme of performance events that illuminate music. As a partner in the Oxfordshire Music Education Partnership (OMEP), St Anne s innovative approach to ensemble music places it at the forefront of practical college music at Oxford. The St Anne s Camerata is modelled on the structure of the more traditional Oxford choral foundations (lay clerks, scholars and choristers). Comprised of professional instrumental musicians, student scholars, and auditioned exhibitioners from the County Music Service, and directed by Dr John Traill (Director of Music) they have performed to capacity audiences at Freemasons Hall, London, and also at Symphony Hall Birmingham and the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building as part of the M@SH Marathon. In April 2014 they were ensemble in residence at the Sao Bento Monastery in Brasilia, Brazil. In addition to working with the Maxwell String Quartet, and OXUS string quartet, through their residencies at St Anne s

College, the St Anne s Camerata have also enjoyed collaborations with Simon Desbruslais, Thomas Hyde, Deborah Pritchard, and guest performers/lecturers from the University of Oxford, Open University, the Oxfordshire County Music Service, and the University of Hull. The Beyond the Dots series featured in OMEP being awarded the Paritor Special Achievement Award for New Music in More recently, they have participated in outreach and commissioning projects, with John Traill, supported by Artswork (Arts Council England bridge organization). Recent projects have also included premiers of works by Luke Bedford, John Traill, John McCabe, with distinguished artists that include Clare Hammond, CHROMA, and the Cornish American Song Institute. The St Anne s Camerata are also ensemble in residence for the Oxford Conducting Institute, providing support for workshops and international conferences in conducting studies. Jamie Savan is a member of His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, and founder and director of The Gonzaga Band. He has performed with many other of the world's leading periodinstrument ensembles, including Concerto Palatino, Oltremontano, La Fenice, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, and Cantus Cölln to name but a few, and continues to be in great demand as a freelance player of the cornett, mute cornett, and the oft-neglected 'lizard' or tenor cornett. Jamie's main passion is in discovering previously unknown music in old manuscripts and original printed

part-books, and in bringing it to life though the process of transcribing, editing, performing and recording. This has led to a number of acclaimed CD productions, including the Complete Instrumental Music and Selected Motets of Giovanni Battista Grillo with His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts (Sfz Music, 2007), and Sacred Garland: Devotional Chamber Music from the Age of Monteverdi with The Gonzaga Band (Chandos, 2009). Since graduating from Oxford University with a first class degree in Music in 1997, he has maintained an interest in academic research and scholarship, whilst developing an international performing career. In 2005, he completed a doctorate in historical performance practice at Birmingham University, where he was also active for several years as a visiting lecturer. Jamie also taught cornett for several years at Birmingham and was professor of cornett at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, before being appointed to his present position as Lecturer in Music and Head of Performance at Newcastle University in Jamie is also a regular guest teacher at the Cantare et Sonare seminar in the Austrian Tyrol and at Wim Becu's Accademia Giovanni Gabrieli in Belgium. Together with Adam Woolf he started the Newark International Early Music Course in 2005, which has since become a hugely successful annual event. Jamie began his musical life as a trumpet player: as an undergraduate he studied with Michael Laird (the renowned pioneer of both the natural trumpet and cornett), and passed the ARCM diploma in trumpet performance with

honours. He went on to specialise on the cornett as a postgraduate student of Jeremy West at the Royal College of Music in London, funded by a Leverhulme studentship, and with Bruce Dickey at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, funded by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Musicians' Benevolent Fund. Improvisation is a key aspect of Jamie's approach to historical performance. His doctoral research focused on improvised ornamentation in Renaissance Germany, and his findings were published in the Historic Brass Society Journal (2008). Between 2005 and 2007 he was involved in a world tour of Alain Platel's VSPRS with Les Ballets C de la B, a collaborative improvisation project involving jazz, Gypsy, and 'early' music. He is currently performing with Paula Chateauneuf's 'Division Lobby', which is exploring approaches to improvisation in early seventeenth-century Italy. Jamie's playing has received considerable critical acclaim: a BBC Radio 3 presenter recently described his sound as 'the most beautifully toned cornetto playing I've heard'. A reviewer for the BBC Music Magazine had 'rarely heard mellifluous swing to match cornettist Jamie Savan's', while the Telegraph, in an echo of Mersenne, described his 'superb technique and truly singing tone' as a 'glorious ray of musical sunshine'. David Heyes studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal College of Music in London and completed his post-graduate studies in Prague with Frantisek Posta (Principal Double Bass,Czech

Philharmonic Orchestra). He has given recitals and masterclassesin 13 countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of international competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist Double Bass Tutor at Wells Cathedral Schoolfor 18 years, and for a year was Contemporary Performer-in-Residence at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He is a founder member of Ensemble Bassissimo, Basso Bravura! (with soprano Sarah Poole), Duettino Basso (with Ben Groenevelt) and Artistic Director of Bass-Fest. David's collaborative work gained him a prestigious award from the David Walter Charitable Trust of New York for his pioneering activities as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new music for double bass. He works with composers throughout the world and is particularly interested to expand the double bass repertoire, by commissioning new works and by rediscovering forgotten ones. Since 1990 more than 500 works have been written for him - from one to twenty basses and from beginner to virtuoso - and he has premiered nine contemporary concertos with orchestra. David has transcribed more than 200 works for double bass and in recent years has composed a number of original works which have been performed in America, Britain, Spain and Czech Republic. Six works inspired by the centenary of the First World War have been particularly successful and his choral and vocal music has been performed in Britain and America. He was a Featured Composer at 2015 Galicia Graves International Double Bass Competition and composed 'Sahara' as an imposed work for the competition.

In 1986 David founded the publishing company Recital Music, which now has the largest catalogue of double bass music in the world, and has written articles and reviews for the leading specialist magazines including The Strad, Bass News, Music Teacher, Double Bassist, ESTA News & Views and Classical Music. David has given recitals, masterclasses and workshops throughout Britain and abroad including UK (Trinity College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music), USA (University of Montana, University of North Texas), France (Paris Conservatoire), China (Central Conservatory, Beijing), Norway (Norwegian Academy of Music), Netherlands (Rotterdam Conservatoire), Spain (Palma Conservatoire, Inca School of Music), Portugal (Escola Superior de Musica, Porto), Italy (Ancona University), Czech Republic (Janacek Academy of Music, Prague Conservatoire) and Denmark (Carl Nielsen Academy, Aarhus Academy of Music). "... a dazzling display of the instrument's bel canto qualities" [Music & Musicians magazine] "... wonderfully well played, the dazzling passage-work splendidly executed with cheerful geniality" [Bath Chronicle] "...a sparkling performance" [Bath Concertino) "You are doing excellent work for the Bass World. Your students and the Wells Cathedral School students are lucky!!" [Simon Garcia, Spanish composer-bassist]

"...a consummate performer, totally committed to today's music every composer's dream. A rare double bassist who connects so directly with his audience, David is a true virtuoso - breath-taking technique alongside passionate expression." [Sadie Harrison, eminent and successful Australian composer] "...You certainly command a wonderful, recreative and innovative double bass section within the String Department of Wells Cathedral School. A seriously brilliant, singular and on-going achievemnt by you in the challenging world of education. Excellent stuff! I look forward to many more workshops under your incomparable, inspiring and guiding leadership." [John Alexander, British composer] "David Heyes...inspirational Godfather of the international double bass world." [Katrina Gordon, Scottish composer and inspirational teacher and educator]. Pippa Hampton is currently in her third year reading music at St Anne s college Oxford. She started playing the French Horn aged 10 and she has played with a number of different orchestras including the National Youth Orchestra, Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra and Oxford University Orchestra.
