1 From the Director Dear Music Academy Students, Parents, and Instructors, As your new director, it s been wonderful getting to know some of our Music Academy families. I have truly enjoyed meeting so many students and parents. I also enjoyed visiting the coordinators of the programs that partner with the IUPUI Music Academy the IUPUI Center for Young Children, St. Richard s School, and Beth-El Zedeck Early Childhood Center. I am impressed with how everyone is making music part of education as well as part of their everyday lives. In addition to these visits I have put my piano lessons to good use in performances at Faculty Orientation, IU s President s Annual Dinner of the Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors, and the Carmel International Arts Festival. Of course I was anxious to do a good job, but I remembered all the advice my music teachers had given me: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Our enrollment is up 25 % and two of our faculty members participated in the Harmony Road Teacher Seminar this fall in order to become certified Harmony Road instructors. We are growing and we are raising the bar to ensure the Academy s continued success. Please stop by to say hello and to give us your ideas and suggestions so we may carry out the mission of the IUPUI Music Academy with you in mind. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Yvonne Gray for fearlessly taking on the position of Interim Director this past summer. Choe, Director 5th Annual Performathon The IUPUI Music Academy s 5th Annual Performathon on Saturday, April 28, was a great success, raising over $1,300 for student scholarships. Students, faculty, board members, and guest performers took turns in the spotlight, sharing their talents with an appreciative audience. IUPUI Music Academy Volume 9, Issue 2 Fall 2008 Did ya know? In 2009, the Performathon will be even more exciting as we combine it with our end-of-semester student recitals. 2 Meet our Newest Faculty Members E.J. Choe, Assistant Professor of Music in the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI, is the new Director of the Music Academy. Dr. Choe made her televised debut as guest pianist for the Korean Broadcasting System Network at the age of six. While growing up in Colorado, she was a prizewinner in numerous competitions, including CSMTA, MTNA, and Fort Collins International Competition. She has appeared as guest soloist with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, and the Arvada Symphony Orchestra. She continues to give concerts and master classes in her native Korea at Yeonsei University, Kangwon University, Chun Nam University, and Honam University. She holds a Bachelor s and Master s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Doctorate in Piano, Music Literature, and Pedagogy from Indiana University in Bloomington. She studied piano with Michele Block, Larry Graham, Doris Lehnert, and Robert Spillman. In addition to her career as pianist, vocal coaching led her to serve as an opera coach/music director at the Aspen Music Festival Opera Center; Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy; Indiana University Opera Theatre; and DePauw University. She collaborated with such artists as world-renowned opera singers Martina Arroyo, James King, Roy Samuelsen, Giorgio Tozzi, and Virginia Zeani. From 2000 until Dr. Choe joined IUPUI in August of 2008, she served as Coordinator for Secondary Piano at the University of Colorado-Denver. Jamey Faulkner holds a Master of Science in Music Technology degree from Indiana University School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from California State University, Northridge. Jamey operates the online guitar lesson website i- love-guitar.com. He also founded the Guitar Institute of Indianapolis in 1998 and released a solo finger style guitar recording 12 stone row in Besides teaching private guitar lessons at the Music Academy, he also teaches at two Indianapolis Montessori schools and the IUPUI Department of Music and Arts Technology. Jamey specializes in musician development using a blend of traditional and modern methods. Ana Garcia has a background in piano, woodwind, vocal performance, eurhythmics, sightsinging, and musicianship for children ages 18 months to seven years. She is a certified Harmony Road instructor and teaches some of our children s classes at Beth- El Zedeck Early Childhood Center. Linda Landeros Lamkin is a flutist, pianist, music teacher, arranger, and researcher. Her students have gone on to perform worldwide, win competitions and win chairs in university and community orchestras, as well as national military bands. Linda has performed throughout the United States, in Canada, Europe, and Israel in solo recitals and has been featured on radio and television in the United States and Europe. She has given master classes in the United States and performed in national and international festivals. She has pioneered an ongoing nursing-home-summer-concert tour program for children and adults in the Bloomington, Indiana, region for the past ten years. Linda received her B.A. in music with an emphasis in flute performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her M.M. in flute performance from the University of Southern California. She is completing her Doctorate in Flute Performance, History, and Literature at Indiana University s Jacobs School of Music, where she has also served as an Associate Instructor. She loves swimming, mountain biking, nature hiking, and her family. Page 2 The Melody Line

3 Faculty & Student News Sarah Stoel vacationed in Colorado and Minnesota this summer and volunteered as an usher for the Indianapolis Tennis Champion Tournament in July. In October she attended a Handbell Festival in Ohio. Matthew Bridgham, student of John Glennon, was admitted with a scholarship to the music program at the University of Indianapolis, where he is now working with Richard Ratliff. Luke Dallman, student of Sarah Stoel, attended Piano Camp at the University of Indianapolis in June and participated in an ensemble recital. James Green, student of John Glennon and winner at Carmel s Young Performers Showcase, was invited to play at a reception in honor of one of the owners of Petrof Pianos (Czech Republic) at Piano Solutions in Indianapolis in September. He will present his collegiate audition program in a recital on December 1 at 7:30 pm (Recital Hall, IT 152) featuring music of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Messaien. Nadine Templeton, student of Sarah Stoel, attended Piano Camp at Butler University in July and was chosen to participate in a Master Class for Piano Pedagogy Symposium with E.L. Lancaster. Faedra Weiss, voice (student of Kathy Myers); Jim Wolf, guitar (student of John Alvarado); Kathy Steinberg, voice (student of René Anderson); and Tara Gavardinas, piano (student of John Gleenon), performed in our Adult Student Recital on November 3.
