33 Antonín Dvořák ( ) was one of the first composers from the Czech Republic to be known internationally. Dvořák used rhythms and melodies from folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia. He was talented at music (particularly the violin) from an early age. Dvořák was a dedicated teacher and world traveler. He was invited to visit London, England nine times, often conducting his own works. In 1892, Dvořák moved to the United States to become the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City, but he later returned to the Czech Republic, where he lived the rest of his life. The Carnival Overture was the second in a trilogy of three overtures, entitled Nature, Life, and Love. The Carnival Overture was written to represent Life and was written just before Dvořák left for America. It served as a farewell, premiering in Prague, and as a musical greeting, receiving its US premiere at Carnegie Hall on his first American program Young People s Concerts: Celebrate!
