The dues will remain at $50 for a returning chorus and $25 for first- year membership. NJCC Treasurer George Steward will be sending notices and invoices soon. We hope to be able to give you the option of paying your dues online or, as usual, mailing the payment and u pdated chorus contact information to George at ewing3756@aol.com. In his notice, George will advise you about ways to update information and pay dues. Consortium Website Update We have made the website easier for individuals to make additions or change to their concert schedules. Click on Concert Schedules on the website, and click on the drop down Add Listing. Use the drop down form to upload your concert information and it will soon be on the website. We hope shortly to give members the ability to pay dues and sign up for workshops online, using PayPal or a credit card. Celebrating an Arts Honor On March 25, Kathy Hannan and Rhoda Wolin accepted, on behalf of the NJCC, the Outstanding Arts Advocate Award presented by morrisarts, the Morris County division of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Several hundred people attended the ceremony at the Morris Museum in Morristown. John McEwen of NJ Theatre Alliance Presents Workshop on Telling Your Chorus s Story in Today s Media World On Saturday, March 22, members of NJCC were treated to an informative presentation of the state of NJ media, and how choruses can adapt to the changing media landscape and some ways to use the tools that they have at hand for making the most of marketing their concerts and themselves. John McEwen, the Executive Director of the NJ Theatre Alliance told attendees that online marketing ( s and website) are taking over from printed materials and many daily newspapers may soon discontinue. It is critical for small organization like choruses to have as many names on a mailing list as possible. Whenever you make contact with someone, ask for the address. Build your mailing lists by using a List Exchange, like TRG. Ask people for their address whenever you make contact. Having an up-to-date website with high quality visuals is key; make sure it has great photography. Use videos on the website. Make it easy for the public to navigate your website to collect information. Having your website mobile-friendly is very important as well. Smart phones are the #1 way people search online now. All communications should end up driving people to the website. Facebook is still the top social media presence, but another source for choruses John McEwen (center) listening to a question by a workshop attendee. to use is Instagram, as it is a good way to capture the personality of your group. There are very few editors on print newspapers. Therefore it is very important to be your own storyteller; ask yourself what makes your story interesting. It can t just be about your concert; it has to have a hook of some kind to attract the editor s attention. Tell what is unique about your organization. Because the NJ Theatre Alliance is similar to the NJ Choral Consortium, there were ideas John presented that worked for the group of professional theatres in the alliance that he thought might work for NJCS members. See one idea below. A Theatre Alliance Idea for Chorus Collaboration: A Choral Sampler John McEwen mentioned in his workshop[ that one idea that had been very popular with theatre lovers was the ability to purchase, from the Theatre Alliance, a Theatre Sampler, a ticket that allowed theatergoers the opportunity to see three different theater groups offereings during a season. The sampler helped the theatres themselves to expand their audience because the theatergoer could only visit an individual theater once. All the theatres in the Theatre Alliance had to agree to offer a substantial discount on at least some offerings; if one group declined to participate, the idea would be tabled. But all theatre groups, big and small, found that they themselves benefited and benefited the growth of theatre in New Jersey. If you agree that this idea is worth exploring, please me at hannan01@aol.com. Masterwork Chorus, the chorus I sing in, thinks this is an idea well worth exploring. --Kathy Hannan, NJCC Prtesident
