5 MATT JAMES PRODUCER On behalf of Taylorian Productions, I am honoured to welcome you to the Gaiety to witness a true theatre classic - Lionel Bart s Musical Masterpiece, Oliver! Our 10th anniversary presentation is a story which needs no introduction. Oliver! has thrilled audiences for over half a century and I have no doubt that this production will do the same, as we celebrate a decade of our own summer shows in the glorious Isle of Man. The urge to revive and re-think the show under our Resident Director and Choreographer Mr. John Cumberlidge, was hard to resist. His patience, enthusiasm and flair for a project has been obvious throughout the development of this wonderful show and I personally thank JC for his vision, professionalism, and loyalty; a true friend and a creative Genius! It also gives me great pleasure to welcome back to Taylorian, Mr. Kelvin Towse. Not only has Kelvin been our musical supervisor throughout the creative process but he has put our Oliver! Orchestra through its paces before handing over the reins to a newcomer to the Island, Mr. Dean McDermott. Dean is a well-established and experienced Musical Director from the professional world of Musical Theatre who will be raising the baton to conduct Taylorian s No.10! Once again I would like to thank the production team and the entire cast, crew, company and orchestra for their hard work, dedication and commitment, to this epic show. Through the good times and the sad times John has tried never to lose sight of Patrick s vision for the company, and being at the helm of Oliver! 2016, The 10th Anniversary Production, has been an honour and a thrill. 6 IS OLIVER REALLY THE GREATEST OF ALL 20TH-CENTURY BRITISH MUSICALS? Actor John Gielgud once remarked that the music was very amateur, though catchy and appropriate but also said that The stagecraft is the thing, Though much of the music does reflect the bleakness of Dickens original novel, with its filthy dens, riverside murk and low dives, there has always been something cheerful and uplifting amid the misery. It s not clear, however, if Bart ever, ever read the novel. Amazingly, he could not read, write or play music. He always said he couldn t tell the difference between A flat and a council flat. He was a complete natural. He sang his tunes and lyrics into a tape recorder, his constant companion. In spite of this, and unlike many musical theatre writers, Bart wrote all three parts of the musical: book, lyrics and music. Following the examples of the likes Noël Coward and Cole Porter, (both self-confessed Bart fans), he completely transformed the British musical scene of the 60 s, moving it away from the charming, witty shows of the Oxford, Cambridge and Eton set and paving the way for more book driven shows. Oliver! had its world premiere on 30th June 1960 at the New Theatre, latterly the Albery, now the Noel Coward Theatre in London s West End and ran for 2618 performances. It starred Ron Moody as Fagin, Georgia Brown as Nancy and Barry Humphries (Dame Edna) as Mr Sowerberry. Among the cast of boys, also, was actor/presenter Tony Robinson and musician Lionel Bart relaxes at home, London 1979 Alec Guinness as Fagin (right) with Robert Newton as Bill Sikes, in David Lean s Oliver Twist, 1948 Phil Collins. Former professional boxer Danny Sewell (brother of television actor George Sewell) played Bill Sikes, beating actor Michael Caine to the role, who said later that he cried for a week after failing to get the part. The role of Nancy was originally written for, singer Alma Cogan, who, in spite of not being able to play the role, was a great supporter of the show and persuaded many investors to part with their money to support it. As Bart was an unknown quantity as a writer/composer he initially struggled to find a producer with at least a dozen managements rejecting his idea as too morbid and impossible to stage. It was producer Donald Albery who had heard a few scraps of songs on tape, who finally agreed to buy and stage the show and mounted the original production for a cost of 15,000. During the original rehearsal period, and early try-outs in Wimbledon, Bart was writing constantly, adding to the original six songs that Albery had heard. Impressed by actor Barry Humphries as Sowerberry, Bart decided to write a song specifically for him and thus the macabre That s Your Funeral was created. Donald Albery had hired Irish theatre designer Sean Kenny who persuaded Bart to write extra music for the scene-changes to be done in full view of the audience. Kenny convinced Bart that the show should flow without actors From the dark to the light: John Howard Davies (top) in the title role in 1948 and Mark Lester in 1968 or scenery ever coming to a stop. Theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh was once quoted as saying: A lot of the original 1960 production had been written during rehearsal to accompany the working of Sean Kenny s set, as Oliver! has an episodic story that requires quick and varied changes of locale. In banishing trucks, painted canvas, and standing flats, Kenny was effecting a design revolution that would pave the way for the newly formed RSC and, eventually, a son of Oliver! design style by John Napier for Cats and Les Misérables. Two of the show s best numbers, Consider Yourself and torch song As Long As He Needs Me were released before the show s opening, recorded by Max Bygraves and Shirley Bassey. The critics (mostly) raved and the show ran for more than six years, making it the longest-running British musical until Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice s Jesus Christ Superstar came along in The production opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on 6th January 1963, with Georgia Brown once again in the role of Nancy but, this time, joined by New Zealand born actor, Clive Revill as Fagin, and future Monkey, Davy Jones as The Artful Dodger. It ran for 774 performances and won three Tony Awards including one for Best Original Score. It cannot be denied that a good deal of Oliver! s popularity stems from its 1969 movie version. Originally accused of being lightweight, compared with David Lean s 1948 black and white non-musical Oliver Twist, which starred Alec Guinness as Fagin, Robert Newton as Sikes and a young Anthony Newley as the Dodger. Carol Reed s musical film version nonetheless won six Oscars and boasted a huge line up of great British character actors alongside Ron Moody, recreating his stage performance as Fagin which included Oliver Reed as Sikes, Leonard Rossiter and Hylda Baker as the Sowerberrys, Harry Secombe as Bumble, Peggy Mount as Mrs Corney. The success of Oliver! should have assured Bart s future in musical theatre but, with the, only moderate success of Ron Moody in his seminal performance as Fagin in Carol Reed s 1968 hit movie Maggie May and Fings Aint Wot They Used T be and the failures of Lock Up Your Daughters and Twang!, his earnings never again quite lived up to his rock and roll lifestyle. Bart, once the darling of the Sixties who mixed with the likes of Princess Margaret, Judy Garland and Liberace, eventually simply withdrew from the fray. He was bankrupt, diabetic and alcoholic. All he had left were his few close friends. When Bart had previously faced severe financial difficulties, he sold his past and future rights to Oliver! for 350 to Max Bygraves, who later sold them on for 250,000. Bart, eventually died in 1999, destitute, even though Cameron Mackintosh had given him back some of the stage rights for the Oliver! His was a roller coaster tale of rags to riches and back again proving, prophetically that, as Fagin says in the musical: In this life, one thing counts, in the bank, large amounts. In spite of these latter problems, one thing is certain. The oft revived and much lauded musical that is Lionel Bart s Oliver! is indeed worth listing as one of the greatest, best known and loved shows of all time

14 PATRICK TAYLOR OUR FOUNDER Lionel Bart s Oliver!, what a fitting way to celebrate the 10th summer season of the company which bears the name of Patrick Denton Taylor, for this was a man who loved to bring top quality theatre to the Island. When he looked ahead to the company s inaugural show, Underneath the Arches, there were tears in eyes as he spoke passionately of a fulfilment, a new zest and an untroubled joy which his involvement in theatre had brought. It was that joy and kindness which touched so many people through the years. As important and as valued as his financial contribution was helping stage shows on the Island which would not always have been commercially viable it was the thrill of seeing young people thrive and progress which gave him a particular satisfaction. So, ten years later, as this true classic returns to the stage of the Gaiety Theatre, we know Mr T would have approved. He derived so much pleasure from good quality productions and from seeing the theatrical development of talented young people. This show ticks both those boxes and the respect and regard in which Patrick Taylor is held within Taylorian remains unwavering. Many on and off-stage in Oliver! 2016 were friends who were touched by his support and loyalty. Here s to a 10 year Taylorian treat in his memory. Faith sees a beautiful blossom in a bulb, a lovely garden in a seed, and a giant oak in an acorn. William Arthur Ward Thank You, Lady J 26

18 Community Spirit Taylorian s Damian Kneale gets to know Lola with Chris Parker from Manx SPCA We re proud to support our local community LOLA THE ENGLISH BULL TERRIER The four-legged star of our production of Oliver! is called Lola. She is just five years old and was gifted to the ManxSPCA earlier in the year because her previous owner s circumstances changed. She has been looking for a new home for some time, but because she is a specialist breed she has been overlooked by potential adopters. She is incredibly affectionate and playful, and very loyal, but she does not get on very well with other dogs and choses humans as her favourite species. She thrives on lots of exercise and companionship (and acting of course!) and simply needs to the right person or family to come into her life. Could this be you? The ManxSPCA rescues, rehabilitates, releases and rehomes thousands of wild and companion animals, just like Lola, every year. It is the only all-animal charity on the Island and it relies on donations and the support of the Manx public to deliver its services in the community and care for its animals at its rescue centre in Foxdale.
