This season marks the 11 th anniversary of the groundbreaking performance and educational series co-founded by the Arsht Center with the late legendary music producer/entrepreneur Larry Rosen in 2008.

Entering its second decade of critically-acclaimed concerts and education initiatives, JAZZ ROOTS is now widely recognized as one of the premier jazz programs in the nation. Since the debut of JAZZ ROOTS in 2008, 90,000 guests have enjoyed its wide array of programs and more than 9,000 students have participated in the hands-on education program that is integral to the mission of the series, said Liz Wallace, vice president, programming of the Arsht Center. With the extraordinarily diverse talent and variety of jazz genres in store for this season, we are proud of our commitment to showcase the best artists that jazz has to offer. "As an artist and educator, I am so proud to be a part of this great series. Bringing world-class jazz to South Florida s diverse audiences and educating young people about America s music has been my life s work. I am honored to continue working with the Arsht Center to carry on this vital mission, said Dean Shelly Berg, JAZZ ROOTS artistic advisor. The six-concert lineup for the JAZZ ROOTS season in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall is as follows: LEONARD BERNSTEIN 100 AND BEYOND Jon Secada, singer/songwriter; Ann Hampton Callaway, vocalist; Kirk Whalum, saxophonist; The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and more! Friday, November 9, 2018 at 8 p.m. The 11 th anniversary season of JAZZ ROOTS begins with a centennial celebration of America s greatest and most loved classical music superstar, Leonard Bernstein. A genre-busting genius who composed symphonic, keyboard, musical theater and ballet masterpieces; conducted the world s greatest orchestras; recorded dozens of best-selling, GRAMMY -winning albums and nurtured the love of classical music in millions of Americans through his groundbreaking television specials, Bernstein has been honored and celebrated this year by arts organizations, festivals and venues throughout the world. The JAZZ ROOTS concert will feature some of the 20 th century s most iconic music reinterpreted and reimagined for today. The evening will include performances by Grammy Award winner Jon Secada, vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway, saxophonist Kirk Whalum, The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and others. With a career spanning over two decades, three GRAMMY Awards, 20 million albums sold in English and Spanish, and starring roles on Broadway, JON SECADA is one of the first bilingual artists to have international crossover success. With a soulful, romantic voice, he is recognized as an international superstar by both fans and peers alike. Beyond his own hits, Secada is widely recognized for his impeccable producing and songwriting skills, collaborating with Gloria Estefan and creating countless popular songs for superstars such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. Secada is also widely recognized for his philanthropic activism, assisting various charitable groups all over the world through his personal organization, Jon Secada Charities, and in 2016 he was named Humanitarian of the Year by The Muhammad Ali Foundation. ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. Her unique singing style blends jazz and traditional pop, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters and jazz clubs as well as in the recording

studio, on television, and in film. Callaway is a Platinum Award-winning writer whose songs are featured on seven Barbra Streisand CDs. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland and Barbara Carroll to name a few. Soulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe the music of KIRK WHALUM. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene, his big, rich tenor saxophone sound is unmistakable. Whalum is the recipient of three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination and two Stellar Awards - gospel music s highest honor. A 12-time GRAMMY nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy in 2011 for Best Gospel Song It s What I Do featuring Lalah Hathaway. For decades he has been an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbra Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston. It s his sax heard on her mega-hit, I Will Always Love You. UM s Frost School of Music HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA is a highly-acclaimed ensemble comprised of a full orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion), plus a full jazz band (saxophones, trombones, trumpets), rhythm section instruments (piano, guitar, bass, drums) and world percussion. ARTEMIS: GREAT WOMEN IN JAZZ Melissa Aldana, tenor saxophonist; Anat Cohen, clarinetist-saxophonist; Ingrid Jensen, trumpeter; Allison Miller, drummer; Renee Rosnes, pianist; Cécile McLorin Salvant, vocalist; Noriko Ueda, bassist Friday December 7, 2018 at 8 p.m. ARTEMIS: GREAT WOMEN IN JAZZ promises powerful, thrilling proof of the state of the art by bringing together a stunning ensemble of powerful women in jazz today. This new international all-star band of women features the pianist Renée Rosnes, vocalist Cécile McClorin Salvant, clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, bassist Noriko Ueda, and drummer Allison Miler. A virtuoso composer, according to DownBeat magazine, RENÉE ROSNES is one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of the young 21 st Century. Upon moving from New York to Vancouver, she quickly established a reputation, touring and recording with such masters as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter. She was a charter member of the all-star SFJAZZ Collective, and she has been praised by Jazz Times for her conceptual heft, suspenseful compositions and mesmerizing performances. Hailed by NPR as a bold new talent with her own style, saxophonist, composer and bandleader MELISSA ALDANA has been acclaimed for the rhythmic élan and spiritual intensity of her music. She was born in Chile to a musical family, moved to Boston in 2007 to study at Berklee, eventually becoming the first South American in the Thelonius Monk Competition. This young tenor with a breezy, accented voice, raved ABC News, is a hard-toned, unsentimental instrumentalist steeped in classical jazz.

Clarinetist, saxophonist and bandleader ANAT COHEN has been praised by DownBeat for her dark tones and delicious lyricism a picture of pure joy. She was born in Israel and studied at the Jaffa Music Conservatory before going on to Berklee in Boston. She is a frequent collaborator with the Cuban-American clarinetist-saxophonist Paquito D Rivera, who has called her one of the greatest players ever of the clarinet. Perhaps The New York Times put it best: Yes, she is the real deal. INGRID JENSEN is recognized as one of the most gifted trumpeters in the global jazz scene. She was born in Vancouver, studied at Berklee, and moved to Europe to become the youngest professor in the history of the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. Settling in New York in the mid-1990s, she has collaborated with jazz legends across generations from Clark Terry to Esperanza Spalding, including a gig on NBC s Saturday Night Live. Ingrid plays with all the brilliance and fire of a true virtuoso, following the spirit of the muse as she creates, said the doyenne of women in jazz, Marian McPartland, warm, sensitive, exciting and totally honest. Raised in Washington, DC, and based in New York City, ALLISON MILLER defies all jazz boundaries while bringing her individual percussion touch to diverse types of music. For her creative, fresh approach to percussion she was chosen as a Rising Star Drummer in DownBeat s 53 rd Annual Critics Poll. Showtime network showcased her music in the series The L Word. Her name is CÉCILE McCLORIN SALVANT, and she may well be the new voice of women in jazz. She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace, proclaimed no less an authority than Wynton Marsalis. Born and raised in Miami, she graduated from Coral Reef High School and then moved to Aix-en- Provence to study both classical music and law. If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, wrote Stephen Holden of The New York Times after a 2013 performance in Jazz at Lincoln Center, it is this 23-year-old virtuoso. NORIKO UEDA is originally from Hyogo, Japan, where she began studying classical piano at the age of 4. By 16 she had moved to the bass, receiving a scholarship to study jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music. For the last decade she has been a regular, often with her own Noriko Ueda Jazz Orchestra, at Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland, as well as touring internationally. Her rousing big band arrangement of Woody Guthrie s This Land Is Your Land was featured in Macy s Fourth of July fireworks celebration and was broadcast on CBS. JOSHUA REDMAN QUARTET Friday, January 18, 2019 at 8 p.m. JOSHUA REDMAN is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. Among his early influences were John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley and his father, Dewey Redman, as well as The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, The Police and Led Zeppelin. He graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Social Studies in He had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for

what he believed was only going to be one year. He was lured by the New York jazz scene, and the rest is history. In addition to his own projects, Redman has recorded and performed with musicians such as Chick Corea, The Dave Matthews Band, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Yo Yo Ma, Branford Marsalis, The Roots, Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones. Mr. Redman is a supremely affable and flowing improviser, according to The New York Times, at times a borderline brilliant one, working in a glow of clarity. JAZZ IN THE KEY OF ELLISON Featuring vocalists Will Downing, Nona Hendryx and Quiana Lynell; trumpeter Nicholas Payton, The Andy Farber Orchestra and more Friday, February 8, 2019 at 8 p.m. A starry concert inspired by the musical life of America s iconic writer Ralph Ellison. The author of the National Book Award-winning novel Invisible Man, Ellison was an accomplished trumpeter and associate of many of the great jazz innovators of his lifetime from Armstrong and Ellington to Bird and Monk. The evening will be pulsing with music, readings, photographs, paintings and video, vividly bringing to life one of the most dynamic eras in American jazz history. The concert will be enriched by educational opportunities featuring Columbia University Jazz and Ellison scholar Bob O Meally, joined by performers from the show. With an almost unheard of 30-year career and 20 solo recordings as proof, it stands to reason music fans are nowhere near ready to vote WILL DOWNING off the proverbial island where he continues to reign as the Prince of Sophisticated Soul. Downing s voice is one of the most distinctive, loved and instantly recognizable voices in R&B. His flawless, emotive, butterysmooth and honey-toned baritone, along with his impeccable phrasing and jazz-fueled agile runs, seamlessly bridge the worlds of R&B and Jazz. R&B and all-around Black-American female icon, NONA HENDRYX is a celebrated vocalist, record producer, songwriter, musician and author. Tackling social issues, love and politics, Hendryx s legendary career, which began as one of the founding members of Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, which morphed into the groundbreaking group Labelle, now spans six decades. New Orleans-born trumpeter, keyboardist, singer, and composer NICHOLAS PAYTON is a dynamic performer, steeped in acoustic jazz and post-bop, whose music often finds him exploring genres beyond the confines of the jazz tradition. In 1997 he won the Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Soloist, Grammy Award. He became a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective in 2004, and currently composes for and performs with TEN, the jazz trio featuring Payton, Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington. Winner of the 2017 Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition, QUIANA LYNELL infuses her classical training with her Southern gospel and blues upbringing and approaches jazz as a storyteller. With her debut album soon to be released by Concord Records, she is positioned to become one of the longstanding artists of Jazz. ANDY FARBER is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and conductor who has performed each of these roles with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. At Marsalis request, Farber assembled the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars for the Tony-

nominated Broadway musical After Midnight. The band is now the Andy Farber Jazz Orchestra, which backed Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga in their PBS special Cheek To Cheek Live. ROBERT GLASPER: REFLECT + RESPOND = NOW Friday, March 8, 2019 at 8 p.m. R+R=NOW, a supergroup making its Arsht Center debut, was assembled by Robert Glasper with an extraordinary ensemble of visionary players, composers, and producers: Glasper on keys, TERRACE MARTIN on synthesizer and vocoder, CHRISTIAN SCOTT ATUNDE on trumpet, DERRICK HODGE on bass, TAYLOR McFERRIN on synth and beatbox, and newcomer JUSTIN TYSON on drums. This genre-mashing outfit moves as one and, as their name reveals, with great purpose. R+R stands for Reflect and Respond, says Glasper. The idea came to him via Nina Simone while he was coproducing Nina Revisited, a companion album to the 2015 film What Happened, Miss Simone? Facing backlash for her politics, Simone was asked why she didn't just shut up and sing. Her answer: an artist s duty, as far as I m concerned, is to reflect the times. Glasper adds: When you reflect what's going on in your time and respond to that, you can't not be relevant. So R plus R equals NOW. FROM BRAZIL WITH LOVE: SERGIO MENDES Friday, April 12, 2019 Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, SERGIO MENDES is one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time. His hit single, "Mas Que Nada," is the first Portuguese language song to ever hit Billboard's U.S. Pop chart and Mendes' signature mix of bossa nova and samba and distinctive pop instrumentation have ultimately come to define Brazilian music. The three-time Grammy Award winner has recorded more than 35 albums, with numerous gold and platinum albums among them. In 2012, Mendes received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio. Mendes' iconic album, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, joining Bruce Springsteen's legendary Born in The U.S.A., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. in the class of historically significant recordings. His most recent album, Magic (2014), is a collection of new songs, recorded with a host of friends and special guests including John Legend, will.i.am, Carlinhos Brown and features the 2014 World Cup hit single "One Nation." Mendes continues to tour worldwide and maintains his work as a film composer and producer, while also always working on and developing his own album projects.
