1 L-series Instructions for 3D configurator These instructions are intended to guide the customer through the process of creating and generating valid L-series connector assemblies. The process of selection starts with the frames. Here s a breakdown of what the part number prefix means and a list of the frames and their capabilities. Remember that the L-series frames and modules are broken up into units. 1 unit =(0.217 )5.5mm. Each module type represents different units in width. The center jackscrew is always 2 units wide. The configurator will automatically add up the module units as you select them but keep in mind that most of the L-series frames do not exceed 20 units. 2 Once you have entered our website and logged into our 3D PartStream section, scroll down until you see the Rack and Panel selection and click on it. Now click on the L Series selection. Next select the frame that you want to use. Click on the Parameters tab which is the second one over on the upper left hand side of the work screen. Page 2 of 8

3 Once a frame has been selected, you can choose the module and contact options that will create your unique connector. It s easiest to start from the top and work your way down the selections. You ll notice that every time you change one of the pull down menus to select an option, the whole section will update 3 or 4 seconds after. This will help to update all of the choices you make as you go along. You ll also notice that every time you select a different module or quantity of module, you can scroll down to the bottom of the section to verify what the total unit size is for the connector and if there are any errors associated with your selections. The errors will show in red and will tell you how to fix them. If you are building a connector from scratch without a part number, then you can proceed to the portions of this document titled Frames without a Jackscrew or Frames with a Jackscrew. If you are trying to build a connector from a part number that you already have, here s the break down of the modules, plating and cable clamps (if applicable). For example, if you have an LPH12/1SH/2UM2/1SH/5AMST/TH, you can see that there are four groups of modules. Even though 1SH is the same module, it is listed in two places and so it counts as 2 groups. Each group can be broken out as follows: Module Quantity Module Style H=No Contacts in Insulator / 1 S H / 5 A M S T / T H Module Quantity Module Style Plating Plating Precursor T Only on Modules A,B,C,D,G,K,M,W,V Contact Termination Contact Gender M=Male, F=Female The Contact Plating thickness Designation can be found at the very end of the example part number after the last T. This part number has an H which signifies 50 microinches of gold. If it were G or even blank (default for plating G ), then there would be 10 micro-inches of gold. Sockets always have AH which means there is 5 microinches of gold on the body parts while there are 50 micro-inches of gold on the mating basket wires. Page 3 of 8

4 Frame without a Jackscrew The first selection is the Contact Gender for all of the modules to be selected. If you need a connector with some pins in some modules and some sockets in other modules, you will have to contact Hypertronics as a special request. The second selection is the Contact Plating Thickness. You can see by the picture above that if Sockets are selected, then the plating is automatically chosen for you. If you select pins as in the picture below, then you have a choice of 10 or 50 micro-inches of gold. Page 4 of 8

5 The third selection is the Number of Module Groups. If you have a block of just one type of module like in example LPH20/20AFST/TAH, then there would only be one Module Group. If you wanted to stagger modules of the same style like in the example LPH10/2AMST/2BMST/2AMST/2BMST/TH, then you would have to choose 4 groups. Once you change the number of groups, you may have to wait 2-3 seconds for the screen to update to be able to choose the other module styles and quantities. Once the screen updates, use the scroll down bar to view the lower half of the selection screen. You will have to do this every time the screen updates. Now you can view and select the available modules in each of the groups listed below. You can also select the quantity of each group just below each choice. Naturally as you select different modules for option 1, 2, 3 and so on, they will be loaded into the connector in that particular order. If the same module is chosen in Module 1 Option as well as in Module 4 Option, then they must also have their own quantity because they each represent their own group in the connector. Module 2 Quantity refers only to Module 2 Option. Page 5 of 8

6 Now that all of your selections have been made, take a look at the verification and validation section at the very bottom of each frame s screen. If you do not see any red errors, then you have a correctly configured connector. Click on the Create button and the 3D view of the connector shown will update using the selections you have made. You can now zoom, twist and pan the 3D view shown by holding down each of your mouse buttons while moving the mouse around. The diagram below the connector points out what each button controls. Also shown above the connector view is the correct Hypertronics part number. In the picture to the right, there is a bar that shows options for the new connector. The default button activated is always the 3D View but you can click on the 2D View to see a layout drawing of the connector. When you are ready to download a copy of the 3D model of the connector or a 2D layout drawing, just click the Download button on the right of the bar and follow the instructions as you go along. 7 Frame with a Jackscrew For the most part, the selection process for a frame that includes a centered jackscrew is the same as the frames without jackscrews with the following exceptions. It is important to note that the jackscrew must always be centered in the frame. That means that the number of units before the jackscrew must equal the number of units after the jackscrew. A little thought might have to be put into the construction of the connector before selections are made, although any selection can be changed at any time without loosing everything. If the same style module is to be used just before and just after the jackscrew it is still considered two separate groups, for example if you have part number LPBV20/20AMST/TH, then we have to split the modules into two groups of ten. There would be one group before the jackscrew and one group after the jackscrew. If you are constructing a connector from scratch without a given part number, than a good place to refer to during your selections is the bottom of the selection screen. It will show the total units for both sides of the jackscrew module as well as the overall unit total. The errors will also guide you to adjust the number of units in the connector. In the example below, the overall unit total is 9.5. Half units are not allowed in the overall unit total on any connector. Also the total on each side of the jackscrew must be adjusted to be equal. 8 When you get to the point where there are no more errors, just click the Create button at the bottom of the screen and follow the instructions as described in the prior instructions. Page 8 of 8
