1 List of stations owned or operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group Sinclair Broadcast Group is the largest owner of television stations in the United States, currently owning or operating a total of 193 outlets across the country in nearly 80 markets, ranging from markets as large as Washington, D.C. to as small as Steubenville, Ohio. The stations are affiliates of various television networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox as well as numerous specialty channels. Many stations are owned outright by the company, while others are owned by legally distinct companies but operated by Sinclair through a local marketing agreement, a concept Sinclair pioneered in Pittsburgh in 1991 when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) forbade duopolies. (The stations involved in the initial deal, WPGH-TV and WPTT now WPNT are now both owned by Sinclair outright.) Sinclair has established local marketing agreements with various companies, most notably Cunningham Broadcasting and Deerfield Media. Sinclair filed an application to acquire the station outright under an FCC "failing station" waiver in July 2005 but the FCC has not acted on the application as of 2014 and will likely either reject the application or continue to not act on it unless Sinclair sells off either WZTV or WUXP due to current rules prohibiting one company from directly owning more than two full-power television stations in the same market. z. Sinclair owned WEMT from 1998 until it was sold to Aurora Broadcasting in 2006; Sinclair reassumed control of the station in 2017 when then-owners Esteem Broadcasting sold the station to Cummingham Broadcasting. aa. The station was formerly a separate full-power station as WCGV-TV until January 2018, when its license was turned in to the FCC after the selling of its spectrum in the 2016 auction. In order to acquire Tribune's WITI in the same market, Sinclair chose to turn in WCGV's channel 25 digital license and merge its subchannels onto WVTV's, but was able to retain the former channel number, thus it continues to virtually operate as its own station despite being a subchannel of WVTV, but WITI would be able to be as the new WCGV intellectual unit is a subchannel in technicality of 12
