6 Market Close-Up: Flint-Saginaw-Bay City, MI Flint is the birthplace of General Motors and is second only to Detroit in auto production. It continues to work to build a broader economic base. There is a small but proud base of cultural attractions including an orchestra and other performing arts, plus some quality museums. Saginaw is a middle-of-the-road industrial city and gateway to recreational areas in northern Michigan. Once an important forest products processor, that industry has declined somewhat and the area now has more general industry and agricultural processing. Bay City is a natural Great Lakes port and center for shipping, and has a vast industrial presence including GM, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, and a number of smaller chemical, forest products and other basic industries, drawn by transportation, timber, and local brine deposits.
