4 A Message from the Physics Teachers at PASCO PASCO Capstone engages students and helps them discover the wonders of physics. We designed Capstone after listening to the experience, insight, and comments of thousands of physics instructors from around the world. We are grateful to you for your input and engagement and are now excited to share with you what Capstone can do for your physics teaching. Capstone makes many tasks a breeze. Create calculations directly in a data table column, add or delete columns, or copy and paste data with ease. Want auto-tracking of objects while performing video analysis of motion? Easy! Do you want vectors displayed of an object s motion in a video? That s easy, too! You can embed instructional support directly into Capstone s customisable lab pages, and you can include text, video, and images alongside live data displays. Documenting student work is easy with the Journal feature. Simply click the Journal icon and Capstone saves a snapshot of their work, which can be included in a lab report. Enhanced calculator capabilities make it easy to integrate sensor measurements into equations, allowing students to see calculated parameters such as momentum or kinetic energy displayed in real time. Special functions such as Smoothing allow students to understand how to treat the real-world noise inherent in scientific measurements. They can create mathematical models of physics phenomena, which helps them clearly link the maths and science. You can easily migrate existing DataStudio files to Capstone. We encourage you to visit our online training resources (capstone.pascoglobal.com), which are designed to help you quickly learn Capstone and begin enjoying all that Capstone has to offer. Sincerely, Jon, Ann, Dave, Jared, Jonathan, Mike, Steve, Rich, Chuck, and Geoffrey For more information: Call or go to pasco.com/capstone 4
5 Look what Capstone can do for you... Video Analysis Vectors Error Bars and Weighted Linear Fits Capabilities include auto-tracking and vectors for velocity and acceleration. Track multiple objects. Make measurements of length, radius, and angles. Versatile Tables Graph uncertainties using user-entered error bars, absolute error, or percent error. The weighted linear fit incorporates the error bars. Convenient Units Selector Multi-Coordinate Tool Calculated columns can be edited directly in the table. Insert or delete columns or change number of decimal places using toolbar buttons. Click and drag columns to rearrange them. Change run colours directly in the table. It s so simple to change units: Just click where the units are and select the new units. Simple features like this make Capstone a joy to use. This tool finds the values of all the measurements all at once. It s great for showing how the position, velocity, and acceleration are related in oscillations. 6 You won t find a better dynamics system for a lower price... anywhere! 24 years ago, PASCO introduced the idea of low-friction carts on tracks. Hundreds of thousands of carts later, we have it perfected. This system is loaded with features that make it easy to do Physics: Aluminium track with T-slots for accessories Two adjustable endstops and two track feet with leveling screws Two carts with mass bars to vary the mass of the carts Two photogate brackets, two picket fences, ready for expansion into photogate timing Clamp-on pulley for string and hanging masses Rod clamp for inclining the track Expandable with accessories on next page Six experiments included ME-6955A PAS A system is only as good as its carts. 8 Go beyond just demonstrating crossed polarisers! Show Malus Law using the Polariser Demonstrator on our optics track. The Polariser Demonstrator gives you an affordable way to show Malus Law. As the polariser is rotated, the intensity of the light varies as the square of the cosine of the angle between the two polarisers. The angle of rotation is marked on the edge of each polariser, so you can read the angle and manually enter it into Capstone. Our Colour Mixer is an inexpensive light source. Polariser Demonstrator OS-9477A PAS Use PASCO Capstone software to plot the Light Intensity vs. Angle. High Sensitivity Light Sensor Connect to an interface. 60 cm Optics Track Demonstrate the effect of optically-active sugar on polarisation. Add the Polariser Demonstrator Accessory (OS-8172) to the Polariser Demonstrator (OS-9477A) (PAS ) for this demonstration. Use a desk lamp or Colour Mixer (OS-8496) behind the diffuser and rotate one of the polarisers to see the sugar water change colours because the axes of polarisation of different colours are rotated to different angles. Demo with Karo corn syrup showing wavelength dependence of optical rotation 2nd Polariser View Sample Stand 1st Screen Polariser Light Light Source Let your students get their hands on all of these affordable polarisers. Linear Polarizer OS-8549 Polariser Demonstrator OS-9477A PAS Two round polariser discs with stands and Polarising film (19 cm diameter) Polariser Demonstrator Accessory OS-8172 Two square glass bottles, a metal stand for bottles, and a diffusion screen Linear Polariser (2 pack) OS-8549 Two polarisers (3.5 x 6 ) 8
9 Just plug it in and shine it on the wall! No need for three slide projectors... this affordable colour mixer is bright enough to project on a wall. Use as a projector in classroom demonstrations. Colour Mixer OS-8496 The Colour Mixer has separate controls for each of the red, blue, and green LEDs that allow brightness to be adjusted from off to full output. Individually adjust the intensity of the super bright red, green, and blue LEDs. Study additive and subtractive colour mixing. Colour Mixer Accessory Kit OS-8495 A Accessory to the Colour Mixer A 7 filter cards A 11 printed colour cards A Manual with 9 lab activities Each card includes a graph showing its transmitted or reflected spectrum. Sets are enclosed in a clear envelope. The red filter s spectral chart shows it transmits only red light. Students observe that the blue and green circles disappear and the overlapping areas of magenta, yellow, and white become red. 10 Here s the science fair project that started PASCO. Over 50 years ago, PASCO founder and owner Paul Stokstad made the Millikan Oil Drop apparatus for a science fair project, and the company was born. A Recreate Cavendish s historical experiment A Uses PASCO Capstone Video Analysis PASCO Advantage For the first time, the measurement of G using the Cavendish Balance can actually be performed in a three-hour lower division physics laboratory! Data collection is done using a webcam. Two periods of the oscillation are recorded for both ball positions in less than 45 minutes. In PASCO Capstone, a curve fit is applied to the damped sine curve generated from the video data, allowing an extremely precise determination of the oscillation period and the final equilibrium positions. When analysis of small effects inherent in the method is included, an accuracy of better than 2% is possible. At left, the USB Camera Microscope records the oscillation of the laser beam. This is a screenshot of the video analysis points (red + signs) in PASCO Capstone. In PASCO Capstone, a damped sine fit is applied to the data to determine the equilibrium point.
