If you can t get satisfying results when recording FM broadcasts with the Dolby N system MPX FITE (multilex filter) (see age ) with the Dolby N system on. Turn PITCH CONTO clockwise to raise the itch, or counterclockwise to lower it. You can adjust it during layback on deck A or normal-seed dubbing. 7 Getting Started Unacking Check that you received the following items: Audio connecting cords () emote commander (remote) M-J90 ()* Sony size AA (6) batteries ()* * not sulied with the U.S.A. and Canadian models Hookus Be sure to match the color-coded cord to the aroriate jacks on the comonents: ed (right) to ed and White (left) to White. Be sure to make connections firmly to avoid hum and noise. Connect the tae deck to the amlifier as shown below. Connecting the tae deck to a Sony amlifier or a receiver through CONTO S connectors (U.S.A. and Canadian models only) Connect the comonents through the CONTO S connectors using a CONTO S cable (not sulied). When using this connection, the deck accets only remote commands from the amlifier or receiver. The remote control sensor on the tae deck will not function. 8 Getting Started Setting the voltage selector (not sulied with the U.S.A., Canadian, and Australian models) Check that the voltage selector on the rear anel of the tae deck is set to the local ower line voltage. If not, set the selector to the correct osition using a screwdriver before connecting the AC ower cord to an AC outlet. You can even locate a secific oint anywhere on a tae (Memory Play) or automatically ski over blank saces (Blank Ski). 9/( 0/) 0 (AMS) (AMS)) BANK SKIP ESET 0/) MEMOY 9/( Note Check the direction indicator of the deck you use. When you locate a track on the reverse side (when ª lights u), ress the button(s) in the arentheses. Note on the number indication in the dislay The number indication in the dislay shows the number of times you ve ressed ) (or 0). During the deck is fastforwarding (or rewinding), the number decreases one by one to indicate the number of tracks until the track you want to locate. You can change the track you want to locate even while the deck is in Multi-AMS oeration ) (or 0). Notes The Multi-AMS function may not work correctly if: the blank sace between tracks is less than seconds long. there is a assage of low frequencies or very low volume within a track. the signal strength of the left and right channels are very different. Even if DI MODE is set to a, the deck stos when the current side reaches the end during Multi-AMS oeration. Do not turn on the Pitch Control function (see age 6) while using the Blank Ski function on deck A. If you do, the Blank Ski function may not work roerly. Since the counter is not a digital clock, it will differ from the actual elased layback or recording time. To enter a track number using ), 0, and SET ) or 0 reeatedly until the track number you want aears in the dislay, then ress SET. To rogram the same track again, ress SET once more. Playing a Tae Using a Timer You can start laying a tae at any time you want by connecting a timer (not sulied). Please refer to the instructions of the timer for further hel. TIME DI MODE You can use your Sony stereo receiver s remote to erform MS rogramming If your Sony stereo receiver s remote has MS buttons, do the following stes. Turn on the receiver and ress TAPE. MS/STAT. ( or 9 to select the front or reverse side of the tae, and the number keys (and the >0 key) to secify the tracks. MS/STAT again to start MS Play. Note For more information on the availability of Sony stereo receiver remotes with MS caability, contact your nearest Sony dealer. 0 (AMS) (AMS)) 9/( 9/( Insert (a) cassette(s) into either deck (or both decks). Make sure that the connections are correct (see age ). Preare the tae deck for layback. For single-deck layback DI MODE reeatedly to select A or a, then ress ( or 9 to select the side of the tae. For layback of both decks in succession DI MODE reeatedly to select EAY, then ress ( or 9 on deck A to select the side of the tae. (Playback on deck B always starts from the front side of the tae.) Set TIME on the tae deck to PAY. Before you set the timer in Ste below; select the Dolby N system (see age 6) adjust the itch (see age 6) activate the Blank Ski function (see age 9) Set the timer to the time you want. The tae deck turns off. When the set time arrives, the tae deck turns on and starts laying. After you have finished using the timer, set TIME on the tae deck to OFF. Note If cassettes have been inserted into both decks for single-deck layback, layback will take lace only on deck A.

However, you can get better recording results by doing the automatic bias current and the recording level calibration. You can do automatic calibration on either deck. PAUSE P 0 (AMS) (AMS)) 9/( AUTO CA PAUSE P 9/( Insert the cassette you want to record on into either deck. Make sure the record-rotect tabs on the cassette have not been removed. During the calibration, the counter changes from 9 to 0. To cancel the automatic calibration function on the deck you re using. If AUTO CA flashes continuously The automatic calibration rocedure has been interruted by: The end of the tae. everse the tae direction or rewind the tae to a new osition that allows recording of the test tone. Damaged tae or dirty heads. Change the cassette or clean and demagnetize the heads (see age 9). Udating the calibration setting If you insert a cassette into either deck A or B and AUTO CA aears in the dislay, it means that automatic calibration data in that deck for that tae tye (I, II or IV) exists. However, we recommend that you reeat the automatic calibraion rocedure each time you insert a new cassette since cassettes of the same tye also vary in their characteristics. Before recalibrating, be sure to turn off AUTO CA in the dislay by ressing AUTO CA. Then start from Ste of the automatic calibration rocedure. To erase calibration data on either deck A or B The automatic calibration data is stored even if you turn off the ower (Memory Backu function). To erase the data, ress and ESET at the same time on the resective deck. AUTO CA for that deck disaears, indicating that the data for the inserted tae tye has been erased. Notes Automatic calibration works only when both decks are stoed. You don t have to select the Dolby N system when doing automatic calibration since the Dolby N system does not affect the calibration results. CA9 AUTO CA When the automatic calibration rocedure ends, the tae rewinds to the original osition, the counter returns to normal and the tae deck stos. Start the actual recording (see age ).

Additional tasks during normal-seed dubbing You can make the following tasks only during normal-seed dubbing. During high-seed dubbing, only works. Select the side from which to start dubbing. To record from The front side The reverse side ( 9 PAUSE P on deck B to start dubbing. To sto dubbing ocate the track you want to record next on deck A (see age 9), then sto the tae. PAUSE P on deck B to resume dubbing. To cancel the Auto Pause function AUTO PAUSE again to turn off AUTO PAUSE in the dislay. Note Do not turn on the Pitch Control function (see age 6) or Blank Ski Function (see age 9) while using the Auto Pause function. If you do, the Auto Pause function may not work roerly. If cassettes are inserted into both decks and A or a aears in the dislay, Simultaneous ecording will start and the same material will be recorded on both taes. Insert (a) cassette(s) into either deck (or both decks). Make sure that the connections are correct (see age ). Turn on the amlifier and lay the rogram source you want to record. 18 Additional Information Precautions Notes on Cassette Taes On safety Do not disassemble the cabinet this may result in an electrical shock. efer servicing to qualified ersonnel only. Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unlug the tae deck and have it checked by qualified ersonnel before oerating it any further. To rotect a recording on side A or B Break out the resective tab. Side A On ower sources Before oerating the tae deck, check that the oerating voltage of the tae deck is identical with your local ower suly. The oerating voltage is indicated on the namelate at the rear of the tae deck. If you are not going to use the tae deck for a long time, be sure to disconnect the tae deck from the wall outlet. To disconnect the AC ower cord, gras the lug itself; never ull the cord. Wait until P stos flashing. / Check that the cassette is inserted correctly and the cassette holder is closed comletely. 22 Additional Information Glossary ATS Automatic Tae Selection. The tae deck automatically sets the aroriate equalization characteristics and bias current according to the tye of tae inserted in the deck. Automatic calibration The automatic adjustment of the bias current and recording level for the inserted tae. This adjustment works together with the deck s ATS (Automatic Tae Selection, see above) to get the best ossible recording results on any tae. Dolby HX PO system A system that reduces distortion and noise in high-frequency resonse during recording. A tae recorded with this system roduces the same high-quality sound even when layed on other tae decks. Dolby N (noise reduction) system A system that eliminates tae hiss noise by boosting low-level signals in the highfrequency range during recording, then lowering them during layback. There are four tyes of systems: A, B, C and S. Tye A is for rofessional use (not available on your tae deck), and tyes B, C and S are for consumer use. Tye S has the maximum noise reduction caability, followed by tyes C and B. Memory backu function A function for storing settings even after the ower is turned off. The settings stored include: counter and counter memory settings multilex filter and Dolby N settings automatic calibration data itch adjustment, tae direction, and headhone volume settings. To reset arameters to their original factory settings, turn on the tae deck while holding down the ESET buttons of both decks A and B. Multi-AMS Multi-Automatic Music Sensor is a function that locates the beginning of u to 0 tracks before or after the current track by detecting the blank sace (of over seconds) between tracks. Multilex filter A filter for eliminating the 9-kHz stereo carrier and the 8-kHz sub-carrier signals that may imair the Dolby N system. Though tuners are usually equied with this filter, if you got oor results when recording FM broadcasts with the Dolby N system, your tuner may not have a filter or the filter may not be working. In this case, ress the MPX FITE button on the tae deck. Quick reverse function A function that quickly reverses the tae direction as soon as the tae deck detects the leader tae. This allows recording or layback to continue without a break even when the tae reaches the end. The quick reverse function does not oerate and the deck does not reverse the tae direction until the tae ends comletely when : you start recording on the tae or begin laying the tae right before the start of the leader tae (less than 0 seconds before). the leader tae is made of dark material that imedes the assage of light. the leader tae has a stried attern. there is no leader tae in the cassette. the base material for the magnetic coating is thin, as in a 0-minute tae. The tae deck may reverse the tae direction in the middle of the tae if: there are folds, wrinkles, oil stains, or uneven atches of magnetic coating on the tae. the quick reverse sensor is exosed to direct sunlight or other strong light sources. Tae counter A dislay element that shows the elased recording or laying time as a digital readout. Since the counter is not a digital clock, the dislayed value will differ slightly from the actual elased recording or laying time. The counter value also includes the length of the leader tae. When deck A and B are oerated at the same time, a slight difference may develo between both counters.
