Close read each literary work and be sure to complete the complete the Double Entry Reflective for the book, chapter by chapter. Identify literary elements used within the written work and explain how it impacts the reader on your journal entry. This pre-work will help your expository essay.
Summer Reading Assignment 3 Double Entry Reflective Journal - Novel Directions: As you read each text, make connections to the text that are text to another text, text to world, or text to self. Record examples from the text and your connection on the chart below. Be sure to have at least five connections per chapter. Textual Example: Quote and Page Number Example: The beautiful, beautiful boys who dotted the landscape like jewels, split the air with their shouts in the field, and thickened the river with their shining wet backs. (Morrison, 56). Connection: This reminds me of. This reminds me of how people from all over the United States protested for the Black Lives Matters movement. Protestors had to argue and prove that black men and boys are valuable in today s society.
Summer Reading Assignment 4 Double Entry Reflective Journal -- Poem Directions: As you read each text, make connections to the text that are text to another text, text to world, or text to self. Record examples from the text and your connection on the chart below. Be sure to have at least five connections per poem. Textual Example: Line and stanza number Example: Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? (Hughes, line 1-2) Connection: This reminds me of. This reminds me of when I ate an old raisin from the carton and the flavor was dry. It s texture was rubbery and not appetizing.
Summer Reading Assignment 5 Topic and Theme - Novel Directions: Identify examples of a chosen topic that you discovered in the text. Write down the example and explain how the author used the literary device to reveal it through the text. Topic: Quote/Textual Example and Page Number Example: The beautiful, beautiful boys who dotted the landscape like jewels, split the air with their shouts in the field, and thickened the river with their shining wet backs. (Morrison, 56). Literary Element Simile /Alliteration Explanation of Quote/Example Toni Morrison uses alliteration to capture the reader s attention. The repetition of the consonant, B for beautiful, beautiful boys helps the audience to see that she truly valued them in this scene. Morrison uses a simile by comparing them to jewels; which proves that they were appreciated and cherished in this era.
Summer Reading Assignment 6 Topic and Theme - Poem Directions: Identify examples of a chosen topic that you discovered in the text. Write down the example and explain how it relates to the topic. Topic: Line Example and Stanza Number Example: Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? (Hughes, line 1-2) Literary Device Simile Explanation of Quote/Example The author uses a simile in this line to show the comparison between a dream and a raisin. The dream is much like the plump grape, if it sits in heat without the source of life, it will then shrivel, like that of a raisin. The dream then loses it vibrancy and flavor.
Summer Reading Assignment 7 Expository Essay Prompt: Directions: Authors write using a vast amount of tools to make their reader engaged in the literary work. In a well written essay, analyze how the author uses 2-3 literary elements in the novel or poem you ve selected to reveal the overall theme of the literature. Be sure to include the following in your writing: A catchy opening and thesis statement within your introductory paragraph 2 pieces of evidence from the related reading A closing paragraph 4-5 thoroughly written paragraphs Include relevant context and detail that support your thesis statement
