4 ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE: STUDENT RESPONDS TO SYRIAN REFUGEE TALK As reported previously in the Newsletter, on Thursday 27th April, the Oxbridge Project and the Sixth Form was visited by a Syrian refugee, Thaer Batal. Thaer has currently partnered with the BBC to tell his story through the documentary, The Refugee Diaries, which follows his story. In Syria, Thaer studied English Literature and Computer Science. Thaer's previous knowledge of the English language and culture was a major factor in deciding which country he wanted to claim asylum in. When asked about this matter, Thaer replied if he didn t know any English then he would have gone to a different country such as Germany. This would have prevented some of the trials which he experienced such as the Calais Jungle. Thaer began by telling us about the beginning of his journey, which was also the most dangerous part. He first began by walking from Syria to Turkey. In Turkey, he then paid a smuggler to take him from Turkey to Greece on a dingy. Thaer recalled the dingy only originally being made for less than a dozen people but actually having to carry over 50 people. Luckily, the people on his boat arrived in Greece safely. Despite this, in reality not everyone is so lucky and over 3,700 people died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in 2016 alone. From Greece, Thear preceded to walk to Macedonia and Serbia. From there, he took a bus from Hungary to Austria. He then passed through Germany to reach France. (Continued overleaf)
5 ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE: STUDENT RESPONDS TO SYRIAN REFUGEE TALK Sarah Abuzaid, 9B Thaer spent 3 months in the Calais jungle trying daily to reach England. Thaer described the cramped and poor sanitary conditions in the jungle. When asked about whether it was a positive or a negative thing that the jungle was destroyed, Thaer responded by saying in theory it was a positive thing but how it was executed made tensions in Calais between the immigrants and people worse as many people became homeless. Thaer tried to reach England by attempting to climb onto the back of lorries destined for the UK on trains. Eventually, he reached England. In England Thaer had to claim asylum and then began to attempt to continue his education by applying to universities. He received a conditional offer from the university of Westminster which relied on him completing his IELTS exam to prove his competence in the English language. Thaer received half a point less than what Westminster wanted, however he was able to persuade the university by talking to a senior figure. This moment in the documentary was very touching for many of the people who attended the talk (Thaer played this scene to us) because it very significant in his journey. After Thaer talked about his journey, people had the opportunity to ask questions. Many of the questions touched on politics and it was interesting to hear a refugee's point of view of what was going on in their country. A particularly interesting question was whether he believed American airstrikes were good or bad. Thaer believed that the airstrikes were negative as they often hit civilians as opposed to the target, ISIS. He also discussed how he believed that this lack of accuracy would result in more people supporting extremist groups. This theory in more technical terms is known as the Blowback Effect which is a huge argument against drone strikes. We really enjoyed the talk and were inspired by Thaer and his story. 6 CIRCLE OF TRUTH 2011: YEAR 11 STUDENTS FAREWELL Class of 2017 For many years, Burlington Danes has celebrated our Year 11 cohort as they transition into sixth form or a college of their choice. The Circle of Truth has been an event that comes around annually, which sees our Year 11 students gather together as a collective before commencing their GCSE examinations. Last week Friday was the day this event took place, and it was heart-warming to listen to the students many of whom have been at the academy since Year 7. They spent some time wishing each other well in their future endeavours. More importantly, it was an opportunity to express their gratitude to the tutors who work so hard to ensure that every pupil has a fair and successful transition into sixth form. There was lots of laughter and tears too as the event drew to a close. It was definitely a moment to cherish and one which we are certain will be remembered in BDA history. We would now like to wish our cohort the best of luck as they begin their GCSE examinations, and we look forward to the big send-off as we have one last celebration at the annual Year 11 prom! 6
7 LIBRARY NEWS WEEKLY UPDATE Hi everyone, Designing biscuits with icing was so popular last week that we decided to do it again but this time we used cupcakes instead! It was a bit trickier as the cupcakes did not have a flat surface as the biscuits did, but we made it work and the designs were amazing! A massive congratulations goes to the following students in Year 8 and 9 for achieving their target of reading 6 books this year: Samsam Ali 9A Jaidon Andrew 8A Adonias Dawit 9L Gabriel Ayass 8N Zuhur Said 9D Zabi Bakhtiari 8A Omara Morrison 9A Romarnie Lovell 8N Anton Morgan 9D Brandon Murphy 8A Sydney Williams 9A Kaia Reid- Clemenston 8A Here s what we re tweeting BOOK REVIEW How Not to Disappear by Clare Furniss How not to disappear explores emotive and challenging issues such as teen pregnancy, dementia and family drama. It is at times dark and emotional but it s also life-affirming and deeply heart-warming. A fantastic novel of self-discovery and tragic family secrets- this will stay with you long after you have read the final page. Hattie's summer isn't going as planned. Her two best friends have abandoned her: Reuben has run off to Europe to 'find himself" and Kat is in Edinburgh with her new girlfriend. Meanwhile Hattie is stuck babysitting her twin siblings and dealing with endless drama around her mum's wedding. Oh, and she's also just discovered that she's pregnant with Reuben's baby Then Gloria, Hattie's great-aunt who no one even knew existed, comes crashing into her life. Gloria's fiercely independent, rather too fond of a gin sling and is in the early stages of dementia. Together the two of them set out on a road trip of self-discovery - Gloria to finally confront the secrets of her past before they are erased from her memory forever and Hattie to face the hard choices that will determine her future Ms Moore 7
