It sent shivers up my spine, as I realized my son was no longer my baby. I really hope she doesn t do that when I take Dana or we may have a lot of tears shed.

I ve been reflecting heavily lately on the last 8 years of the Scoop and how we arrived at where we re at.

My daughter, Dana, started kindergarten September of 2001 and Here s the Scoop hit the streets 2 months later on November 1st. As I prepare myself for our daughter s Bert Church High School Orientation, which is approaching faster than I care to acknowledge, I m reminded all over again of just how precious our minutes really are. I remember the orientation I went to with my son. The principle, Mrs. Adams, got up on the stage and said, Good evening class of It sent shivers up my spine, as I realized my son was no longer my baby. I really hope she doesn t do that when I take Dana or we may have a lot of tears shed. I have a clock in my office that says, Time is precious, Waste it wisely. My mom always liked that clock and now I understand why. I ve been reflecting heavily lately on the last 8 years of the Scoop and how we arrived at where we re at. You see this wee little Canadian paper comes with so much personality, and so many people have contributed to it, that I find I m always telling stories. Kind of like the ear protection gear my son s band now uses when practicing. Levi wanted to know why I d even have that. Well, back in the day when we printed and folded this baby, things could get real loud in a 10 x 12 room. That folder snapped 100 pages per minute. We recently brought that folder out of retirement to fold some brochures, and the sound of it snapping away made me smile. It reminded me of our humble beginnings and of how far we ve come. Then just recently, I had a young lad come through our, doors asking if I remembered him. Oh my gosh Robbie Jackett. He and his sister, Heather, had a paper route with me for years. They also helped collate printed sections of the Scoop back then. I can still picture them sitting at our kitchen table with piles of Scoop sections in front of them. I reflect on those that have contributed to our content. I don t know how many times I ve checked phone messages over the past 8 years and found myself laughing. During the BSE crisis, I remember a phone message that said, I figured out how to get my cows across the border that are older than 30 months dress them in Moo Moos!! There was a time each week we d have a message left on our machine with a joke or quote. Many of them have made it into our pages, and it warms my heart to see so many people willing to laugh. As I sit in my office, compiling stories from our Scoops over the first 5 years for a potential book, I m reminded of my original business plan. Money was never our goal when we started. Although the bank likes to see numbers, and the tax man likes to see dollar signs, we at Scoop Central, like to see smiles. It never gets old, folks. I still love to hear how your kids fight over the paper, or how each week you sit with your coffee and just read our paper. My sole purpose in September 2001 was to team up with someone to bring ABSOLUTELY NO NEWS to as many households as I could manage. Al and I were already a team, so with the addition of Tamara, my vision became our vision. Throughout the years, we ve added many other key members to our Scoop Troop, and that vision gets stronger with each one of them. Although our format has changed just a bit, from 4 pages black and white to the 32 pages or greater in full colour you see today, my original business plan..our original business plan.has never changed. From the 10,000 readers we had in 2001, to the over 45,000 readers we reach each week now, we continue to keep our original mission of making as many people possible, feel good about a world that is often portrayed as hard and cold. And as I look back, I realize that our Scoop Troop also includes the many thousands of readers and many hundreds of advertisers that have supported our vision over the years. It may be my paper with regards to ownership, but it s their paper..your paper in spirit and soul. Each year, I have an anniversary contest. This is where we get to find out who the real Scoop collectors are. Here s the deal. I ask you to provide me with original copies of certain Scoop issues. You win $$$.
