TL Sept DALET: LEGAL NOTICE AND PROMO 1- PROMO 2 IDENTIFICATION: YOU RE LISTENING TO CBC RADIO 3- Program theme music (fast-paced)... Hello, everyone. I m (host). Welcome to ALL THAT JAZZ!, your weekly radio rendezvous. Here are today s stories and guests: -Anchoring a news broadcast, must have its ups and downs. Our Headhunter has the story. - (acoustics expert) tells us all about the Quebec Stradivarius. -Our food experts explain the latest eating trends. - We ve got a quiz to test your knowledge, about history. - And our arts reporter will enlighten us on the CBC SEARCHLIGHT talent search. And here with me, of course, my faithful sidekick, (sidekick). (Group applause) DALET: PROGRAM THEME MUSIC PROGRAM THEME MUSIC Evening, (host). Yes, yes, for our 500th show, we have a big crowd here in the studio with us. Our group comes from (city/town). Is that right? HEAD OF GROUP (Improvised response. Include name of school and group number). Well, thanks so much for being here. You ll bring even more energy to the studio!!! You re certainly as peppy as ever, (sidekick)! And we re off! Have a great show, everyone! (Group applause) 2

DALET: BUMPER «SEARCHLIGHT» MUSIC : SEARCHLIGHT Have you ever heard of CBC s Searchlight? It s a CBC Music initiative to find new Canadian talent online. Each year, the winner gets $20,000 in musical instruments, a showcase slot at the CBC Music Festival, and a professional recording session! Our arts reporter (arts reporter) has more details about this amazing program. ARTS REPORTER Each year, CBC Music kicks off a hunt for Canada s best new artist, spanning genres and regions, and creating a massive showcase for talent in this country. In 2014 alone, over four thousand acts tried their luck. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner, though, and this year s was Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk, of Brooks, Alberta, who had submitted their song I Lost Myself. The way it works is, anyone who s Canadian can enter by creating a page for themselves on CBC Music and then posting their song or video on the site. There several rounds in each region, with public voting at each stage, to end up with five national finalists. Meanwhile, a panel of celebrity judges chooses another five entries they support. In the end, the public votes again to determine the national finalist. The singer or band wins all those great prizes (host) mentioned, but you as the public also get a chance at winning some great prizes from Yamaha Canada Music simply by voting. Check out this year s edition at music.cbc.ca. Do you think you have what it takes to be Canada s best new artist? You ll never know unless you enter... It s free, so you have nothing lose! You can also watch the video for this year s winning song, I Lost Myself on the CBC Music site or YouTube. Here s a teaser (host). DVD : TEASER ( ) TEASER : LAUREN MANN : Wow, such a great track (arts reporter). I ll include in my next playlist for sure! DALET: FOOD REPORT FOOD REPORT : There are currently seven billion three hundred million people inhabiting our world. Everything we eat comes from the ground and agriculture that s a huge domain to keep going. Can we turn to other food sources that are high in protein? Our food reporter 3

TL Sept and his (or her) guest are coming to us today with this story from China. Hello, (food reporter). FOOD REPORTER: Thank you, (host). Like you say, the world population is 7.3 billion, and that will go up another billion over the next ten years. To feed all those mouths, some countries have already resorted to a various types of protein little known to us in Canada, like insects. Scorpions, grasshoppers, silkworms, ants and larva are nutritious, and they emit far fewer greenhouse gases. Here with me is (nutritionist), who will fill us in on the insect diet. NUTRITIONIST: Hello, (food reporter). You won t see many people eating insects in North America, but most of us have seen them being eaten on reality TV shows. It s hard for us to swallow the little critters, and yet there are several benefits to putting them on the menu. Bugs are very nutritious, and eating them could help fight world hunger. Since the seventies, meat consumption has almost tripled, and livestock production now takes up over seventy percent of the land available for agriculture. Crickets make a perfect substitute for beef. They deliver just as much protein, and they are even richer in iron. Would you eat cricket cakes? They re high in Omega 3 and 6, just like fish, but without the mercury! FOOD REPORTER: And I imagine, (nutritionist), that this meat substitute solution carries environmental benefits too, right? NUTRITIONIST: Insect farming, as it s called, produces far fewer greenhouse gases, and uses up little water. To put you in context, ten kilos of plants will yield six to eight kilos of insects, but it will only produce one kilo of meat. In North America, we re reluctant to eat insects. It s a cultural barrier, but some adventurous chefs are putting insects on the menu anyway. FOOD REPORTER: Thanks so much, (nutritionist). That was very informative! This is (food reporter), in Shenzhen, in the lovely Guangdong Province, China. Mmmm, sounds yummy! Thank you very much, (food reporter), for that report. DALET : BUMPER BUMPER For our special report today, we go live to our news team stunt performer. In a few minutes, we ll hear him/her skydive from a helicopter. The trick will be landing in the CBC parking lot. Hi there, (stunt performer), can you hear me? 4

STUNT PERFORMER Hey!! Listen, the wind is blowing at eighty kilometres an hour up here. My safety hook s barely holding! Are the camera crews and reporters ready on the ground? STUNT PERFORMER Yeah, they re all on the roof of Maison de Radio-Canada! We ll be posting the footage tomorrow on the program website! (Group do the countdown together in studio.) Can I get a studio countdown, please? goooooo! What s going on, (stunt performer), haven t you jumped yet? STUNT PERFORMER Oops, forgot to unfasten my safety hook... OK, here goes! (Lots of noise, screams of horror, and a thud) DALET : MAN JUMPING! MAN JUMPING Oh, no! (stunt performer), are you OK? (SILENCE) Oh my gosh, I think that s the only jump (stunt performer) our news team stunt performer will be doing tonight!! Please don t try this at home. DALET: SPORTS BUMPER SPORTS BUMPER In our sports report today, we meet a police officer who found a way to improve quality of life for a number of young people in Montreal. SPORTS REPORTER He sure did, (host). I m reporting today from Saint-Michel in Montreal North, which is home to a very special place called Le Club de boxe l Espoir, which loosely translates as the Hope Boxing Club. Tell me, (sports reporter), what are they trying to do at the club? SPORTS REPORTER It s a boxing club that was founded by an MUC police officer, Constable Evens Guercy. Mr. Guercy decided he wanted to help young people in his district. He also had a degree in sociology, 5

TL Sept and wanted to do something to lower the high school dropout rate, by giving kids a place where they can do sports. Boxing helps them improve their physical fitness in a healthy environment. Today, there are over 70 young members at the club. One young boxer even won a bronze medal at the Canadian championships. If you wish to make a donation to Evens Guercy s charity, go to the website at the bottom of your screen. Back to you, (host). Such a great commitment to a worthy cause! Thanks, (sports reporter). When we come back, some guilty pleasures. DALET: BUMPER INTRO GUILTY PLEASURES THEME MUSIC Now for our weekly visit with my friend (guilty pleasures reporter), our guilty pleasures reporter, who s going to tell me his top picks for the week. We ll listen to a bit of music, and then he ll talk about his good and bad memories. Good evening, (guilty pleasures reporter). GUILTY PLEASURES REPORTER Evening, (host). This week, I chose three songs that made shivers go up and down my spine. Here s the first one... DALET: MUSIC CLIP (10 sec.) MUSIC CLIP (SLOW) Oh boy. I have a feeling it was your first broken heart! Do tell! GUILTY PLEASURES REPORTER Response: 10 seconds Here s the second. Hold on to your hats! DALET: MUSIC CLIP (10 sec.) MUSIC CLIP (DANCE) GUILTY PLEASURES REPORTER Response: 10 seconds And the last one. It s pretty awful, I know! 6

DALET: MUSIC CLIP (10 sec.) MUSIC CLIP (POP) GUILTY PLEASURES REPORTER Response: 10 seconds That s my most embarrassing moments! What a hoot! Next week on our Guilty Pleasures segment, we ll talk food! DALET: MUSIC BUMPER MUSIC BUMPER Attention, listeners, I m receiving word that communication has been established with our reporter Mr. A. Lien, who is currently on the red planet and has a few words to tell us about the Mars-One mission. Mr. A. Lyen, can you hear me? MR. A. LIEN Yes, (sidekick), loud and clear. It took me seven months to get here. I wish I could take off my helmet and be more presentable, but there s no oxygen here and the temperature is around minus 63 degrees. The Dutch company Mars-One is attempting to colonize Mars. It hopes to send humans to live on Mars in 2025 as part of a reality TV show. The show s profits will fund the mission. How much is the voyage going to cost? MR. A. LIEN A one-way ticket to Mars is available at the low cost of six billion dollars. The space travellers won t come back, because Mars is 55.7 million kilometres from Earth, and it would cost too much for the return trip. A total of 1,057 earthling candidates, including seven Quebecers, have a chance at living on Mars and helping to populate it. There s plenty of time, so I ll likely come back to tell you more, (sidekick). The first 24 inhabitants will only arrive on Mars in 11 years from now. I ll leave you now, but could you please send me some food, (host)? Thank you, Mr. A. Lien. 7

TL Sept Hard to believe it wasn t that long ago they were only sending chimps into space! Next, our headhunter, has met a news anchor to tell us about our job hunting section. Hi (headhunter) HEADHUNTER Well (host), anchoring a news program is quite a challenge, one to which we rise every day. We asked our colleague Andrew to share some of his experiences with us. Hello Andrew, can you give us a brief history of how you came to be a reporter for CBC News? Answer on Dalet: Andrew: HEADHUNTER How did your education prepare you for becoming a journalist and news anchor? Answer on Dalet: Andrew: HEADHUNTER Give us a little taste of what a typical day is like for you. Answer on Dalet: Andrew: HEADHUNTER Doing a live broadcast must have its ups and downs. Do you have any stories to tell us? Answer on Dalet: Andrew: HEADHUNTER Thank you for sharing your time and insights with us, Andrew. I wish you and CBC News Vancouver continued success. Goodbye! Answer on Dalet: Andrew: HEADHUNTER Thanks, Andrew, for telling us what it s like to be a journalist. DALET: THEME MUSIC The Can You Repeat the Question, Please? show Tonight, the host of Can You Repeat the Question, Please? is here with us. Please welcome Pierre Brassard. (Group applause) 8

Hello, Pierre. How are you? OF CYRTQP You ve probably noticed that I m not Pierre. He asked me to sit in for him tonight. We have a surprise for you. We re going to play Can You Repeat the Question, Please? DALET: MUSIC MUSIC Now for the date of the day: one second, I ll turn the ball cage. DALET: DRUMM DRUMM The first ball says: the month of July! Now for the second ball, which will tell us the day of the month. DALET: SLOT MACHINE SLOT MACHINE It s July 1st! CYRTQP And what a big day it is! July 1st is the day most Quebec rental housing tenants move. It s also Canada Day. But did you know that July 1st is also the birthday of many Canadian immigrants? When people have no idea what day of the year their birthday falls on, the Government of Canada arbitrarily assigns them July 1st as a birthday. Whoa! That s a lot of July 1st birthdays! CYRTQP Here in the studio with me are two players ready to do our quiz. May I have your names, please? PLAYER 1 (player 1) 9

TL Sept PLAYER 2 and (player 2) CYRTQP Hi there! Now, can we test your buzzers, please! DALET: S 1 & 2 S CYRTQP All set, then. Now, for our first category: POLITICS. Which of the following happened on July 1st? - In 1997, after 156 years as a British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China. - In 2011, South Sudan proclaimed its independence. - In 1999, in the Canadian North, Nunavut became a territory in its own right, with Iqaluit as its capital. DALET: S S PLAYER 2 I think it s Sudan in DALET: WRONG CYRTQP Sorry, wrong answer. What do you say, (player 1)? DALET: 1 1 PARTICIPANT 1 I d say it was Hong Kong, in DALET : RIGHT CYRTQP Good one! That s right. Mr. C.Y. Ying has been President of the special administrative region of Hong Kong since July 1, Now for our next category: SPORTS Remember, it happened on July 1st! 10

In 1958, Canadian amputee runner Terry Fox was born. In 1903, France kicked off the first Tour de France cycling race. In 2012, an Australian woman miraculously survived a bungee jump gone terribly wrong. The bungee cords broke and she fell into crocodile-infested waters with her feet caught in the knotted cords. DALET: 1 PLAYER 1 I don t think Terry Fox was born on July 1st. So I ll go with the Australian bungee jumper in 2012! DALET: WRONG CYRTQP Nice try, but that was on January 9th. Up to you, (player 2). PLAYER 2 Unlike my opponent, I m going to pick Terry Fox, (CYRTQP host) DALET: WRONG CYRTQP No, Terry Fox was born on July 28th. The right answer was the first Tour de France in 1903! It was a close race through all six stages, and Maurice Garin finally won it. Voilà! Now, our final category: TECHNOLOGY. Here are your choices: In 1974: In Troy, Ohio, a pack of gum was the first item ever sold with a bar code and optical reader. In 1890: Trois-Rivières saw electric light for the first time. And in 1979: The first Walkman cassette player, made by Sony, went on sale in Japan. DALET : 2 PLAYER 2 I think it s the Sony Walkman! 11

TL Sept DALET: RIGHT CYRTQP Excellent, (player 2)! Invented by Sony co-founder Akio Morita, the Walkman hit the shelves in Japan on July 1st, 1979! Well, it looks like we have a tie. I hope you enjoyed playing this educational game today. Back to you, (host). Thank you (CYRTQP host)! You re right, I think they learned a lot! DALET: ETIQUETTE BUMPER ETIQUETTE BUMPER Good manners and decency seem to be a thing of the past these days. When the feminist movement began, many advertisements that had been quite acceptable began to feel incredibly dated to us. (etiquette expert), you did some research into the good manners imposed on women in those days? ETIQUETTE EXPERT Yes, (sidekick). I found a clip from a show about good manners originally broadcast in Let s listen to it... DALET: GOOD MANNERS CLIP GOOD MANNERS CLIP That was quite amusing, I must say! ETIQUETTE EXPERT You said it! Nowadays, misuse of the cellphone is a habit we should all be very concerned about. Here are a few things to avoid: -Don t text while someone is talking to you, because it s impolite. The person may feel you re not interested in the conversation. -Cellphones at the dinner table, during meetings, and at social gatherings are rude. Breaking up with someone... Or even worse, firing someone by text is simply not acceptable! -Talking on your cellphone in public places or on public transportation is disrespectful of others. Plus, most of the time, you will be discussing private matters. You know, it s today s younger generation who will need to show the way for those who come after them! 12

Thanks so much, (etiquette expert). Let s hope our listeners will follow your advice. That was so interesting! DALET: MUSIC THEME MUSIC THEME Thanks to our producer (producer) for that uplifting music. We ve now reached the end of our show. Thanks so much, (host). It s definitely been an enriching experience. But before we sign off, I d like to commend the work of our technicians, because there wouldn t be a show without our team in the control room. I d like to thank: our producer (name) our sound effects technician (name) our sound technician (name) our control room technician (name) This is your co-host, (sidekick). And this is your host, (host). Tune in next week, my friends! DALET: CLOSING THEME MUSIC Theme music (5 seconds) Identification: You re listening to CBC Radio One END OF PROGRAM 13
