2 56 Discoveries in Egypt Howard Carter discovers Tutankhamen Howard Carter was born on 9 May 1874 in London. His father, Samuel, was a successful animal portrait painter. Howard never went to school, but his father taught him to draw and paint. In 1891, Howard Carter went to Egypt to draw the decorated walls of ancient tombs. Carter spent many years working as an artist and photographer. In 1909, Carter began to work for Lord Carnarvon, a collector of antiquities. Carter began to look for ancient tombs in the Valley of the Kings. But after several years of digging, he had not found much. Lord Carnarvon was ready to give up, but Carter persuaded him to give money for one last try. On 4 November 1922, Carter found the steps of what proved to be King Tutankhamen s tomb. Then he found a sealed doorway. On November 26, after making a small hole in the doorway, Carter peered into the tomb using a candle for light. It was sometime before one could see, the hot air escaping caused the candle to fl icker, but as soon as one s eyes became accustomed to the glimmer of light the interior of the chamber gradually loomed before one, with its strange and wonderful medley of extraordinary and beautiful objects heaped upon one another. There was naturally short suspense for those present who could not see, when Lord Carnarvon said to me Can you see anything? I replied to him Yes, it is wonderful. Tutankhamen became an Egyptian king when he was about eight years old. He died when he was about 17. The true face of King Tutankhamen is now more than years old. The King s funeral mask is made of solid gold. 11
