It forms a pure, white blanket that covers everything and makes it look pretty and I like to consider the symbolism of this. Whilst it may look attractive, it is beguiling because snow brings with it ice - which is treacherous. So, the layer of snow that looks so appealing can also be construed as a deceptive veneer that offers excitement and danger in equal measure. There is a lesson for life here related to the idiom, Don t judge a book by its cover. Equally, the boys should heed the words of Shakespeare, from his famous tragedy The Merchant of Venice, All that glitters is not gold. This idea was adapted by another of my favourite writers, JRR Tolkien, who extended the concept in Lord of the Rings to hint at the noble birth-right of Aragorn, in the riddle of Strider, which is crafted with consummate skill: All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes, a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king. You may be wondering at this point why I am making so many literary references. It was, of course, World Book Day on Thursday! As an English teacher by trade, I do not need any excuse to celebrate our literary heritage and it was wonderful to see so many of the boys and staff dressed as characters from novels by eminent authors from Dahl to Dickens. The profound impact of immersing oneself in a good book has many redeeming features, not least the sheer escapism of allowing one s imagination run amok, and I urge all of you to spend some time with your sons this weekend reinforcing the power of reading as well as enjoying the snow! 2 Hurstmonceux Observatory On Friday, Year 5 braved the cold and went down to Hurstmonceux Observatory. The boys have been studying space and forces in their science lessons and the trip gave them a chance to see some of the oldest telescopes in the world whilst also getting a demonstration involving some rocket fuel! Mr Russell Smartie People are Happy People During what Mrs Lambert's maths group described as 'the best maths lesson ever!', the boys calculated fractions using Smarties. They worked out the fraction of each colour of sweets in a pack and showed incredible resolve by finishing the lesson before they ate any of their resources! Mrs Lambert

3 In Class with Reception and Year 1 The boys have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. As an exercise they had to sellotape a shape to the back of their partner and then the partner had to ask lots of questions about the shape. He then had to see if he could guess the shape. Ben had to give Cameron a clue (the shape was a pyramid) - he said It is in Egypt. This was a brilliant clue Ben. Well done! World Book Day The boys in Lower Prep enjoyed dressing up as their favourite fairy tale characters today, to celebrate World

Miss Walliss Ballet Boy Robin Ward (6R) has gained a highly coveted place at the Royal Ballet School to live and study there

He saw off stiff competition to secure his place at the school, which admits just 12 boys per year from all over the world.

4 World Book Day The boys in Lower Prep enjoyed dressing up as their favourite fairy tale characters today, to celebrate World Book Day. Miss Walliss Ballet Boy Robin Ward (6R) has gained a highly coveted place at the Royal Ballet School to live and study there full time from September. He saw off stiff competition to secure his place at the school, which admits just 12 boys per year from all over the world. Robin will be based at White Lodge, a former royal hunting lodge in the heart of Richmond Park, where he will have daily lessons in ballet and academic subjects. He hopes to join the Royal Ballet Company when he finishes his studies and to one day become a Principal dancer there. Well done, Robin and good luck! Languages Taster Afternoon at St John s On Tuesday 27th February, Madame Taylor and I took a group of Year 5 boys to St Johns in Leatherhead for a 'Language Taster Day'.

..(my name is...). In French a song was played for them listing all the French speaking countries in the world and they tried to write down as many as they could hear.

The German teacher took them through some different food types such as; Wasser (water); HeiBe schokolade, (hot chocolate); Kaffe (coffee) and Pommes (chips).

The afternoon ended in the dining hall, where they were treated to German sausage, French profiteroles and Croque Monsieur and Spanish tapas.

6 Languages Taster Afternoon at St John s On Tuesday 27th February, Madame Taylor and I took a group of Year 5 boys to St Johns in Leatherhead for a 'Language Taster Day'. The boys had 3 twenty minute sessions on 3 different languages. In Spanish they were introduced to general greetings such as; Hola, (hello); Como te llamas? (what's your name) and Me llamo...(my name is...). In French a song was played for them listing all the French speaking countries in the world and they tried to write down as many as they could hear. The French teacher was great fun, talking to them in French and making them laugh with some of her mannerisms. The German teacher took them through some different food types such as; Wasser (water); HeiBe schokolade, (hot chocolate); Kaffe (coffee) and Pommes (chips). The boys joined in with the activities which included a game of Bingo in German and they practiced the pronunciations of all the new words they were learning. The afternoon ended in the dining hall, where they were treated to German sausage, French profiteroles and Croque Monsieur and Spanish tapas. Each boy came away with a goodie bag containing a water bottle. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we hope they remember some of the new vocabulary. We have a daily choice of fillings for Jacket Potatoes and wholemeal or white baguettes, also including a vegetarian option. Ham, Cheddar Cheese and baked beans are available every day with both Tuna Mayonnaise and Coronation Chicken offered on occasion. Our Salad Bar has a wide selection of ingredients including green salad leaves, tomatoes, beetroot, sweetcorn and coleslaw. Additionally there may be Italian Sun Dried Tomato and Mozzarella salad, a Greek Salad with Olives and other seasonal specialities. Break time snacks of ham or cheese sandwiches, fruit or vegetables should only be brought in to school in named, reusable containers. A reminder that no nuts or sesame seeds in any product, including bread, should be brought to school. No plastic wrapped items, please. Lost Items Waterproof grey and blue cagoule - Ben Holmes This coat, belongs to Max Mitchell-Nessbert. Max is sure that he left the coat in the geography room before half term, but when he went back it wasn't there. Any help in finding the coat would be greatly appreciated, especially in this cold weather.

SUNDAY 4th March THE MEETING HAS BEEN POSTPONED and is now scheduled for MARCH 25th Spring Term Programme March 18th, , Epsom. Speaking English The words we think in, sing in, talk in, which feed our imagination, which tell us what we are - where did they all come from? How did a few tribal dialects on a northern island become the billion-tongued language of Modern English? Why does the spelling have to be so difficult? Our speaker is a professional actor so all be delivered with a flourish, and a lot of audience participation. March 25th : Reporting the News Every day there are happenings good and bad all over the world : calamities like floods, but also great sporting achievements, miraculous rescues and always there are politicians debating how we should be ruled. Who decides what is important enough to be on the TV news? Helen Wade, BBC reporter, will show some footage and discuss how it is influencing how we think. Try being a reporter for a day, learn how to check sources and then imagine you are in a war zone. You might also find yourself being interviewed or being the interviewer. Where else but Surrey Explorers could you have the chance to be taught by a TV reporter how the news is made and how to do it yourself?
